Interstellar (2014)
Mesmerized by the infinite beauty of space...
Interstellar offers us for the first time a vision of this incredibly huge universe where we are just an infinite small part of it. Never before I was so mesmerized by the beauty and at the same time the depressing and claustrophobic feeling of space.
This ain't no Star wars! physic laws apply here, and show us that our space future will be much more difficult than we thought watching the usual space flick with hyperdrive or FTL engine. With these huge distance, we will have to also cope with time and the conundrum of its consequences.
Interstellar cannot be watch once only, multiple watching are necessary to measure its majesty. I really hope we will get a sequel because it deserves it.
I was also impressed by the music of Hans Zimmer, his use of symbolic pipe organ (homage to 2001?) and minimalist , near mathematical, rhythms are really in total symbiosis with the movie like I rarely experience it before.
Of course the movie itself is not perfect, but Nolan really transcended himself giving us a glimpse of a far far away future for the human race.... if we don't kill ourselves long before because of our greed and incredible stupidity.
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015)
Like a Big Mac.... sounds great until you ate it.
I must admit, I watched the first one in France when I was 9 in 1978 (France had to wait 1 year to get it) at The GRAND REX in Paris: GIANT screen, an amazing painted roof full of little stars on a dark night... the historic seventh art movie theater of Paris. So, yes, now for the young fanatics, I am part of the "old farts".
I loved the first trilogy, of course, a revolution for my young eyes, a space adventure full of mythology from the ancient Greek tragedies, great character's chemistry, full of cool witty dialogs, great SFX (for the era)... and even with the first sad glimpses of what's to come from the original creator when he created the Ewoks in ROTJ.... Still, the final reunion of the prodigal son and his evil father was strong enough to make the childish fur balls a detail in the story.
Forward 20 years, now super rich and fat alike his creation "Jabba the Hut", Triple chin Lucas from his greenbacks pedestal finally decided to give us the prequels of his original dream (without a doubt, written as a quick note on a toilet paper)... and the magic suddenly vanished... I was in London for the premiere (French release was still few weeks away... I couldn't wait!)... The goosebumps watching the beloved logo and the entry score from John Williams.... then - Big crashing noises, sudden scratch on a LP - Whaaaaattt? 20 years for this? A bad kid actor playing an already born super hero, so much American culture references in a galaxy which should have been FAR FAR AWAY from us, no more wit, no more crispy dialog, no more character development... Long story short, I didn't give a damn about the 2 others movies (never seen them in theater) which like the TPM were also of the same wood ( I finally watched them at home few years later)... bad acting, bad story, bad, bad, bad... etc... Good decision I made boycotting them, I told to myself.
Forward another 10 more years, and then a glimpse of hope at the end of the tunnel. First teaser looked so great. It gave me goosebumps and a smile on may face again... then all the PR crap and the hype did their best to grab my attention even more: "return to the original spirit" they said, "no more all-CGI, no more blue/green screen, real decors, animatronics..." they said... I was hooked again... more mature, yes but definitely interested.
So I waited 3 weeks, avoiding any news and spoilers, until the new generation of SW fanatics watched it at least 5 times.... then I went. "Leave this movie to me, kids! (strong breaths in a mask)".... Goosebumps again seeing the beloved logo and the entry score again... Desert scene... Hummm OK, Robot gets the vital information... Hey, wait a minute.... yes, they did it again... and again, and again. During all the movie a small anger was mounting in the back of my head... "I have a very bad feeling about this"... long story short, I was right, between the nostalgic bits, the good old' faces, the refreshing female and Afro-American leads... the truth was becoming sadly clear: this was NO homage, this was a complete robbery of the original Star Wars plot and scene by scene script!!! What a fool I was to fell into this travesty once again. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me... I was depressed: Disney achieved old Lucas's work, the last nail on the SW coffin. So long, Star Wars, I loved you and I'll still keep the original Blu Ray trilogy as a token of my past allegiance to the 77' space revolution.
One by One (1974)
Hard to see but the best F1 documentary ever...
It was the days when F1 was really a lethal sport for crazies... the interviews of many of these guys, knowing that most of them finished burned alive in their cars few months or years after the filming, is so tragically poignant. Cevert in particular... so genuine and open about his passion, Jackie and their friendship. A future world champion until his fate was sealed this terrible day at Watkins Glen 1973. Awesome footage of movie quality of these 1973 raging motor beasts mastered by their crazy fearless masters... rarely seen so vibrant footage of a long gone era. And of course the awful drama of these 2 terrible and visceral graphic scenes that demonstrate why so few could ride these mechanical monsters. A documentary that explains the essence of this sport during these early eras: epic, raw and dangerous. One of the best ever.
Zero Dark Thirty (2012)
All this movie proves is that they could have easily taken OBL Alive...
Good movie for the clinical depiction of event but as usual with Hollywood, another terrible movie which defend torture and lawless actions as acts of bravery in the long scheme of events.
Hard to understand why torturing and cold clinical killing are signs of a civilized modern nation which often call itself the "free world"... When you use the same dirty and above the laws tactics than you adversaries, you are not better than them, you become them!
Fact is killing OBL was a COWARDLY act, not an act of bravery. When you kill the suspect when you can easily take him alive in custody, it's murder, plain and simple. It's an act that shows the world that you are in fact what you hunt, nothing better than the terrorists themselves, and certainly not acivilized nation governed by fair laws. We all know why Obama and its advisers have chosen the cowboy's way: Because putting OBL alive on trial would have opened a terrible can of worms for the previous administration and the entire lawless system build upon 911 aftermath.
That is where bravery should have come from however. Taking the risk to bring him back alive and let us understand the man behind 911... a much better closure for the families who lost their beloved.
It was also funny how the US CIA guy in the movie is depicting the 3000 live lost when the USA killed more than hundred of thousands in retaliation during two illegal wars. These don't count obviously in the balance.
