LOVED this teen movie: it's beyond my control
30 September 2022
This is class. I'm old enough to remember Keanu Reeves in Dangerous Liaisons, then SMG in Cruel Intentions. Loved seeing her again in this sophisticated homage to the classical revenge novel. Perfectly updated for 2022.

The school uniforms pay tribute to Dangerous Liaisons and that whole pre-French Revolution Louis XVI vibe. The soundtrack borrows heavily from Cruel Intentions. The cast, while destroying each other's characters, seem to revel in the high drama of it all.

It's not going to win an Oscar or change the world. But it will give you two hours of entertaining escapism. Let go of your cynicism and relax in the warm bubble bath of Do Revenge.

Just cheer up! Dangerous mental health messaging
2 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Apparently all it takes to turn your life around is a stern talking to, then a shower and a good tidy up. This film contains some worrying messaging about mental health: saying that it's normal to be depressed; adults who are meant to help (the dean of students, WTF?) will wisecrack instead of showing concern; and if you just pick yourself up by your bootstraps your life will turn around!! And, even better, once you start wearing colour instead of those grey sweatpants, boys will like you! Which we know is the holy grail, right?

Most nuanced show on mental health ever?
3 September 2018
Just finished watching season three. I enjoyed season one because it was fun and Rebecca was OTT. I was fascinated by the way she took other characters with her. And as series two and three went on I realised this isn't a show about following up on a teenage crush. It's a complicated and textured show about human relationships and the sliding scale that is mental health. It's smart, funny, painful and rewarding. I can not recommend this show enough.
