Red Lights (2012)
A total let down of a movie
I had high hopes for this movie after reading some of the glowing reviews on this site. I figured that with Weaver and De Niro this had to be on course. I will admit that the first 45 minutes of the movie are excellent, engrossing and you really feel like you are on course for something special. But then it all goes horribly wrong. It turns into a total circus with a VERY easy to predict plot. I've read reviews of people saying stuff about needing to be a genius to figure this movie out. The clues are blatantly obvious! As for the characters, it's the best I've seen Weaver since the Alien movies. As for De Niro, why does he keep choosing roles that are just not suited to De Niro? Murphy is best sticking to being a slime bad guy.
This could have been a genuinely good story but turned out to be a poor imitation of an M Night Shyamalan movie. I cannot recommend this movie.
Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)
Still a movie for children
This movie has a plodding drawn out start, and is very predictable even if you have never heard the tale of Snow White. The dwarfs (when they eventually enter the movie) have limited uses and it felt as if they were stuck in as an after thought. There are one or two really lovely scenes where the computer graphics make you all cutesy and happy, but the battle scenes are for children and are not done very well. There are reminders of LOTR here and there, but where this movie fails most is in the storyline and its lack of depth. The acting is good enough, as were the sets, graphics and effects, but the Snow White tale does not make for a very good movie. Despite all the modern touches, it is still a movie for children, and if you are an adult looking for some fantasy/action then forget it.
Prometheus (2012)
Just watch it because its awesome
It really is the best movie I've seen this year. If you love anything to do with Alien, then you will enjoy this movie. One warning to Alien fans - do NOT expect it to deliver what you are sure it is going to deliver - you will be disappointed if you do. Watch it with the bare knowledge that it is set in the Alien universe we have come to love, and you will really enjoy it. As far as raw science fiction goes, this blows Avatar and anything else remotely sci-fi made in the last 5 years, out the water. So few directors can get this right, and Ridley Scott proves he is still the master at making engrossing and re-watchable sci-fi movies.
