The Idea of You (2024)
Amazingly lifeless and passionless
As soon as the characters met it hit me: I'm watching a high-end adaptation of a One Direction fanfic, and I couldn't unsee it throughout the movie. Cliché upon cliché, bland dialogue, so so unfunny. And the original music is trying so hard to be moving and trendy, but it's very early 2010s, an mere echo of actual hits. Cringe fest.
The only thing that was pleasantly surprising was the feminist attitude unabashedly supported by the heroine and here daughter. Amen to choosing feminist romantic partners, even if they are still just men.
As a cinematic creation, I'd put this movie's value alongside Fifty Shades. Sorry not sorry .
They/Them (2022)
A mix of memorable and disappointing
This horror movie has a lot going for it, apart from the 'horror' part.
I liked the 'summer camp slasher' trope turned around, the cinematography, the unexpected lead, and all the godly queerness. The movie has a few stand-out scenes, but, alas, they do not make up for the lack of tension.
When the Mist Clears (2022)
The trailer promises, but the film doesn't deliver
This was an odd experience. The scenery is lush. The experienced actors seem to do their best with what they're given (the father had a lot going on for him). But the female lead made me think 'This must be the case of the director being so smitten by a woman they would film her against their own better judgement'. It's either that, or the lady must have been holding him for ransom. I have no other ideas as to how to explain the presence of the actress in this film. Also, the movie pretends to be taking you into the territory of the erotic genre, but does not deliver even close. It fails as a romance by being too blunt and obvious, it fails as a drama by giving extremely poor acting from the starlet. Guys, if you're going for erotica, just go there. Don't pretend to be above it. Cheap 50 Shades knock-offs do not play out well when there's no commitment.
Black Narcissus (2020)
A delicate and romantic character study
I liked that the central heroine's narrative stayed on her own struggle with her faith, memories and emotions and didn't stray too far into the 'will they/won't they' territory, although the latter added much allure and eroticism. I liked how the relationship between sister Clodagh and Mr Dean took time to bridge the distance and thus gave me time, as a viewer, to get to know them better. It was slow, and I liked it better for it.
I found the cinematography mesmerizing. It created the feeling of spaciousness, air, loneliness and beauty.
