Resident Evil (2022)

Starts off with what seems good horror
31 December 2022
The first episode it looked like we're in for a good show. Then it turned into teenage brat stuff. It constantly flips from present to future. Which is not so bad, but every time it comes back to present it's just bad acting, bad plot. The directing is pretty lame too. How can you sneak up on someone in a helicopter? Diversions from realistic like this are consistent with this show. And how do you change your race? Perhaps with poor casting. I stuck it out for 5eps, and wish Netflix could refund that part of my life back. Where are all the monsters? The opening scene has a giant grub but then it's just people being zombies.

Pieces of Her (2022)

Disappointing
9 March 2022
A story about a girl trying to piece together who her mother really is. At first I thought she's so dumb this is a big task for her. But I looked past that and gave it a go anyway. I endured nearly 5 episodes before I couldn't stand it any more. Too many cliches. Too much fluff just to drag it out. And too many times you just think "as if". It got to the point where I just didn't care what happens. It's rare to see Toni Collette in something that sucks but here it is.

Good movie if your stomach can handle it
25 January 2013
On the surface, the plot of this movie would seem like another lame piece of junk written by some dumb teenager who doesn't have a clue about anything. Many comparisons have been made to Saw and other torture movies, but really, it's not the same kind of thing at all. But make no mistake, this is not for the squeamish, it is quite gruesome. But it is not gruesome for gruesome's sake. Many of the gory parts are implied rather than shown, which I think is done so you can connect to the story rather than the gore. The acting and directing have done an outstanding job to pull off what I think is a great success in what could have been a dismal failure, given the plot. There are also a couple nice twists at the end to give it a bit more credibility.

It held me captivated because it wasn't just predictable guff. If Big Brother was more like this, maybe I would have watched it.

Best remake I've ever seen
27 September 2012
The original movie made in 1989 was not really that scary, a bit creepy, but not very scary. This new version really takes on the scare factor. It does get the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. Daniel Radcliffe is perfectly cast in this chilling ghost story. I suppose what may come naturally to the viewer is that we are used to seeing him stare danger in the face as Harry Potter as he does in this film, except he's playing a much more mature role now. (Interesting trivia fact - The main role in the original version is played by Adrian Rawlins who plays Harry Potter's dad).

The main problem with the original other than it was not really that scary, is that it did not make much sense. What the story was behind "the woman in black" was too subtle. This newer version is much more clear and true to the movie's title. It's essentially the same story with a few changes, but it makes for a much better and scarier story.

If you've seen the original and that's kind of put you off seeing this one, then ignore that and see this. I'm not a big fan of remakes, but this one took a relatively dull movie and made it something great. Also, it has a completely different ending, which the movie is much more deserving of.

The stuff nightmares are made of
25 September 2012
Have you ever been told not to eat cheese before going to bed because it will give you bad dreams? This film is like one of those bad dreams. You know how these dreams start off subtle then things start getting more bizarre, then it scares you because you can't tell what is real, and you find yourself in a dark place within your mind before you realize that your dreaming then you wake up. This film spends a lot of time in that dark place.

Very spooky, and very well directed. Some concepts used in this film I haven't seen in other films, which for me made it feel original. Everyone starring in this film is relatively unheard of, but the acting was very good.

If there is anything lacking about this film I could say, it would be that there didn't seem to be any big plot twist to pull you in. What could be considered as plot twists I think are just plot developments. But that's fair enough, because the story is fairly involved, and to add any major twist could make it too complicated.

If you're after a horror with lots of mindless gore then watch Feast (1, 2, and 3). But if you want to watch a scary story (including some gore), then check this out, but you may still be thinking about it long after you watch it.

The Pact (II) (2012)

Very modern, Genuine feel
20 September 2012
This is a fantastic little horror story, and sure enough, similar core plot lines have been shown before, but still very enjoyable. Two things that stood out for me were firstly, this is a very modern day film. The use of smart phones, google maps street view, and piggybacking unsecured wifi from your neighbors is naturally incorporated into the film without technology being a character itself. The second thing that sets this film aside from others is the lack of unnecessary make up. With the exception of one relatively minor character, who is meant to look a bit spaced out, there is not much going on in the make up department. Especially the lead character, she looks so natural. I think this makes for a more realistic connection that the audience can make with her, rather than seeing her wake up with salon hair and perfect makeup, this in turn gives a real feel to the story.

The best thing about this film, is that even though I have seen many horror movies, and a little bit desensitized to scary moments, this one still managed to give me goose bumps, and at times had me on the edge of my seat. If you're anything of a horror movie fan, check this one out.

The Ward (2010)

Brilliantly played out
8 September 2012
The pace of this movie was 100% spot on. I love the genres of horror, thriller, & mystery. This movie covers all perfectly. It keeps you interested from start to finish without a dull moment. The lead role is played by Amber Heard, who started her career as a model then shifted to acting. But don't let yourself think that she got the role just because she looks good. This girl can really act, she is certainly one to keep an eye out for in future. She plays the role of Kristen, a young woman admitted to a psychiatric ward. She does a fantastic job of convincing the audience that she is being haunted by the ghost of a former patient, while her fellow patients help to build the plot. She shows great strength of character as she desperately tries to take control of her situation. The film is set in the 60's, but could just as easily be set in the current time period. But it does give an appreciation for the level of psychiatric treatment in those days. Many reviews of this movie I have read say that we have seen it all before, and there is nothing new. But really, you can say that about a lot of movies. I think the fact that it contains plot twists is what makes it a great mystery movie. It is not packed full of gory, insanely scary scenes, although it has its moments. It keeps the suspense rolling as you're trying to figure out what's going on. If you like mystery movies, watch this, you won't be disappointed.
