Edge of Darkness (2010)
Hasn't Aged Well
Unlike the scenes where Mel's character is younger this film hasn't aged very well. It tried to have a story line and a little bit of intrigue but just ends up being a silly action film, with very poorly thought out dialogue which means the storyline goes from almost believable to ending up being complete nonsense. Not quite sure what Ray Winston's character is supposed to be doing during the film, and to be fair apart from Gibson's character it was hard to work out what to expect from each character as their place in the film seemed to change every time Gibson's character changed personality.
Silent Witness (1996)
Needs putting out to rest
The writers have run out of things to do and are just recycling old stories but with slightly different characters. The character of a crime scene pathologist doesn't have 25 series worth of stories to it, so they have now started making them appear like front line detectives or even special agents just to keep this going. What next Nikki Alexander leads a top level Navy Seals unit into deepest Colombia to fight an international drugs cartel off the back of her finding a different type of cocaine in the system of a drug addict that was unfortunately found dead - who knows but I wouldn't put it past the writers for a 26th series.
McDonald & Dodds: Clouds Across the Moon (2022)
Easy as ABC
This is the ABC murders - a plot line that is about 80 years old. It worries me that were expected to believe that people are employed as detectives that couldn't see the connections of the murders it was so so much in plain sight. I was half asleep when I watched this and I could see the connections on their white board at the first glance. Has the bar got so low for ITV Crime Drama.
The Pentaverate (2022)
One Joke in 1990 seems to have lasted this guy 30 years
Same jokes and themes since Austin Powers - watered down originally to make Love Guru and watered down even more to make this. People for some reason still find this funny, which is probably the funniest part of this.
Being the Ricardos (2021)
Great Acting - story for the United States bubble
I Love Lucy wasn't that much a hit outside the United States, I am in my late 40s and have never watched an episode of the show, as it is never shown as a re-run in the United Kingdom. It was interesting how the characters played off each and it kind reminded me of the Larry Sanders Show type of back stage fighting and bickering between the cast and crew. I'm sure this will mean something more to the people of the United States were the characters and the situation mean more to them.
Dead Still (2020)
Plot loses its way before it's developed.
Not sure if they wanted this to be a comedy drama or a thriller but it really doesn't hit either mark that really well. Michael Smiley is good in the main character and I could quite easily watch something with the character that he has developed for this, if the writing was at the same level he was.
Anon (2018)
Smoking at work - back story the real gem.
I would consider the back story of when it became okay to smoke at work more of a story than this. The tobacco lobby and their power struggle with the Government, the people who protest to have work smoking re-instated. The marches on Washington, the debates on tv. Remembering the celebrity endorsements and those terrible for and against riots. A much more compelling film could be made from that, than this slightly below average film.
The Nevers (2021)
Not sure about this
Yes I know it's fantasy and fiction and it's not real but need to have some element of historical realism if you are going to reference history, was half expecting them all to get iPhones out at one stage. It just feels like it's another story where they've set it in a certain time period and done little or no research into that period of time and for most people that's usually enough.
Intergalactic (2021)
Just Average
Badly written, mediocre acting. Expect a slightly higher bar from Sky.
The Irregulars (2021)
Mix of fact and fiction doesn't work
Would have been much better if they didn't try and pretend this needed to be set in Victorian London. The addition of the Duke Albany as an add on character doesn't work and having this "real" person mixed in with fictional characters, will only make people question historical contexts. Plastic buttons on the urchin clothes is a big shout out to the obvious corner cutting involved in this production. Set it in 2021,where it wants be.
United We Fall (2014)
Really Bad
In the days where Mockumentaries have developed so much this looks so badly put together and badly written. After it had done the 3 main jokes about top end footballers it was just repeat repeat of the same things. Also if you are going to reference real teams and real years at least get the teams that won the trophies right - the clip of the Man City fans with "Champions 2012" t-shirts on look a bit strange in 2010 ??
Dressed to Kill (1946)
Very Expensive Boxes - True Mystery
When 3 cheap looking musical boxes go for £2 (If bought in 1909 when the original story was written £230 and £90 if bought in 1946 when the film was made) there is bound to be something up. Essentially that's the only mystery in this film. Decent remake of the Six Napoleons for the Hollywood audience.
The Otherworld (2016)
Nice pleasant family film
Good honest family film with a nice Celtic and Pagan story line which actually means something to the culture of the U.K. More films like this please.
