Midnight Masquerade (2014)
Sweet Reverse Cinderella Story
I really enjoyed this movie. It was a sweet story with a bit of a twist on the old Cinderella story. The characters were well-cast and the story flowed nicely. Even though I had a good idea how it would end, it was still enjoyable and held my attention throughout. The only reason I didn't give it 10 stars was that I had such a hard time getting past Rob's hair. It looked like a bad wig. Was it just a bad wig, or poor styling? I realize this movie is 9 years old, but still. I don't know anyone who had such strange looking hair, even back then. All in all, I spent an hour and a half with a movie that has done Hallmark proud.
Joy & Hope (2020)
What a waste of time!
While I heartily agree with the other viewers who gave this a 2-star rating, I really don't have much more to add but that it was worse than a high school drama class table read. I gave it 2 stars because it was a sweet story, just so poorly executed with pathetic acting and miserable music that it makes you wonder how such awful movies like this get released.
I felt sorry for Andrew Rogers who played Ethan, the writer. He has really been good and memorable in other movies I've seen. Huge waste of his talent for sure in this otherwise talent-less waste of time. I'm about 2/3 of the way through it at this point and as soon as I've finished this review, I'm going to watch something else.
Saving Hope (2019)
Bad story, bad actors, bad everything!
Somehow I got through about a third of this movie before I was ready to tear my hair out. I am not sitting here watching two people saunter through their family photo album. And that was the best part. Slow, lackluster, very poor acting, poor storyline, annoying background music...life is just too short to spend on bad movies.
Spencer (2021)
I'll never get that 2 hours back
While this role of Diana was perfect for broody Kristen Stewart, the whole thing was a total waste of time. I grew up in an English family yet I could barely understand a word that was said in this movie as everyone seemed to mumble. FYI, most English people don't mumble like that. At any rate, it wasn't well done at all and painted a picture of Diana that I would rather not have seen.
The Lost Daughter (2021)
Nice scenery, but that's about it.
I usually love these kinds of movies, but I barely got through the first half hour before I gave up. Slow, boring, annoying, and you couldn't even enjoy the beautiful scenery as there were so many unnecessary closeups of random people. I gave it 3 stars for what beautiful scenery I did happen to enjoy and for the premise. I only wish it had been done better. I don't understand all the 8/10 ratings. Maybe I'll read the book instead.
Finding You (2020)
Delightful!
As a musician of British heritage who plays Celtic music, I really enjoyed this movie. The scenery was breathtaking and the music superb. The story was sweet, but it was more of a typically Hallmark-esque love story. Still, it was a delightfully entertaining movie that I enjoyed very much.
Oh Ship! It's a Family Trip (2020)
Bad everything!
I'm just trying to find random movies to watch. I enjoy cruising and like to try out the Indies, so I thought I'd try this. Not even 15 mins into it I had to call it quits. The acting is so bad it's not even laughable. The actors mumble all the time so it's impossible to understand most of what they're saying. It's like a middle-school video project failure. Just awful.
Christmas Catch (2018)
Worst excuse for a crime story, but a good laugh!
This is one of the worst movies I've ever wasted my time on. No cops would ever act like that--they'd be fired in a New York minute. The acting was awful and the story totally unbelievable. I would have turned it off sooner, but at least it had me laughing at what were supposed to be serious scenes. What a train-wreck!
A Christmas Hero (2020)
More like "A Christmas Disaster"
This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. If I'd been in a theater I would have walked out 10 mins in. The acting was stilted, clearly not actors, but maybe a bunch of drama club members who thought it was a good idea to make a video mashup of A Christmas Carol, It's A Wonderful Life, and other really good Christmas movies with a nod to vets reintegrating into society. They should have done their homework. What a mess they made! If I were a vet I'd be offended at this futile attempt at...whatever this was. I'm only sorry I wasted as much time on it as I did.
The Wake of Light (2019)
Sweet story, but just didn't get there
The premise was sweet and it was pretty well done, but there just wasn't enough to it. So much more could have been done to round out what could have been a good film. I realize it is an indie and I appreciate the effort, but it was only about a half hour of story and the rest filler. And that awful piano music! Maybe it's because I'm a musician (mainly pianist), but that plinky, repetitive piano music was way over the top--like nails on a chalk board. Fortunately, there wasn't much dialogue so I could mute most of it.
Call Me Kat (2021)
An Awful Attempt to Copy UK's Miranda
If this is supposed to be the US version of Miranda, it has failed miserably. I've always like Mayim Bialik, but this attempt at humor is excruciating. Don't try to copy someone who is really great unless you're greater, which you are not. C'mon Mayim. Come up with something original. I know you can.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Some good, but not much
While this film might bring to light a lot of environmental issues with thought-provoking ideas, it's essentially so slow that I kept falling asleep and I wasn't even tired. I finally fast-forwarded through the drawn-out parts (staring at himself in the mirror, eating his meals, people staring at stuff, looking thoughtful, and on and on). I gave it four stars as it delivered what I expected, just far too slowly to satisfy my active mind.
Knives Out (2019)
Good story, but bad accent!
OMG I couldn't believe how bad Daniel Craig's "southern" accent was. I couldn't get past his sad attempt at a southern accent. He needs to stick to his own accent. It almost ruined the movie for me. That said, it was a good story, nice twist, and otherwise very entertaining, thus the seven stars. If Craig had used his own accent it would have been far more enjoyable and I would have given it 9 or 10 stars.
Cats (2019)
Glorious! But then, I'm a catlover.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I absolutely loved the movie. It was beautiful. The music was lovely, the "cats" were graceful and expressive, and the scenery was spectacular. I think those who didn't like it/hated it/hoped it would burn in he!! are the ones who also think the play is a joke. To some, I'm sure it could be, but I loved the play and I loved the movie. My two friends who were with me loved it too. I know, birds of a feather and all that...
A Bad Moms Christmas (2017)
Hilarious!
While it may not be an Oscar winner, I haven't laughed so hard since the episode of "Friends" with Ross and the leather pants. God, this was funny! So stupidly, unbelievably funny.
Ladies of the Lake (2016)
So bad it's laughable
OMG this is one of the worst shows I've ever seen! I think it is supposed to be bad--bad actors (never heard of any of them), bad clothes, bad storyline (actually there was NO storyline), the "sound" (I won't dignify it by calling it music)--everything was so bad and so annoying that I think it's a spoof show. It surely can't be for real. That's ten minutes of my life I'll never get back.
The Cool Kids (2018)
What a waste of good talent
Although I'm of this age, I find this to be the most unfunny waste of time and talent. Hey, life's too short to waste on bad programming.
The First (2018)
Two stars for effort
This is an awful soap opera about spoiled whiny kids and dysfunctional relationships. It has nothing to do with science although there was a brief mention of space travel. I gave it 2 stars for effort because the cast is good, it's just a shame they are not being used to their best abilities. After 2-1/2 episodes I gave up. Life is too short.
Hailey Dean Mystery: Deadly Estate (2017)
ZZZzzzzzzzz.......
OMG Kellie Martin has to be the most boring actress I've ever seen! No facial expressions, no personality, just deadpan all the way through. Except I couldn't get all the way through. I couldn't stay awake and I wasn't even tired, just bored to tears. I decided my time was more valuable than to waste it on Kellie Martin movies.
World Without End (2012)
Very real to me
I am entranced with the dark ages and absolutely loved this series. I also loved Pillars, maybe a little more, but both truly deserve ten stars in my book.
I really do enjoy how it meanders through the story giving it more of a feeling of being there, being drawn in by the story and its characters. If you are looking for a fast-paced dark ages thriller, this is not it, but a more realistic account of the times and the hundred year war.
Someone mentioned that their accents were not authentic, but if they were, 90% of us would not be able to understand a word! They were authentic enough for me to fully immerse myself in the story.
Both Pillars and World will become part of my DVD collection.
The Fountain (2006)
Beautifully done!
The Tree of Life, Orbs, Nebula, star-studded sky...this is an absolutely beautiful, spiritual, intellectual movie. It will not be terribly popular with those looking for simple-minded entertainment and special FX—instead it is an ageless love story lovingly told throughout the ages with effects that completely fit the story. The actors all did a superb and believable job of bringing their respective characters to life. I am an author of the spiritual genre and I bought the DVD so I could watch it whenever I needed some inspiration. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is metaphysically spiritual because you will understand, appreciate, and enjoy it very much.
Defying Gravity (2009)
Ended too soon!
This was one of the best series' I've ever seen! It's a shame it ended in mid-season. I couldn't wait to see the rest so I purchased the entire season on DVD and I'm glad I did. I don't usually watch things over and over but I seem to pick up something new each time I watch them--be it something I missed the last time, or a different thought or idea comes to mind.
It doesn't have to be realistic, but it really makes you stop and think--if you have an open mind. If your mind is closed you wouldn't enjoy this type of entertainment so don't watch it and don't comment on it. But I will enjoy this one season for years to come.
