I never go into a film expecting anything, this is a rule I live by. I've gone to the theater far to many times expecting the end all to end all films, and get let down more often then not. Superman Returns is a film I've been eagerly expecting ever since I heard Bryan Singer's involvement. He started off slow with X-Men but we saw what he was capable of in X2, hell this film could have been directed by Ratner, thank God we dodged that bullet. But with that said this wasn't a great film, I even have a hard time calling it a good film. I can't give this film higher than a 7 but I will not drop it under a 6, falls somewhere in between and you guys can decide for yourselves.
The film has a lot of flaws, I'll focus on a few that I thought deeply hurt it. Please I will have to use spoilers in order to make my case so please stop reading if you have yet to see the film. With that said let me say that the kid wasn't annoying, he himself did not ruin the film but already showing the fact that he his in fact the son of Superman hurts this films franchise a little. Every other Superman film that will come out will have to focus somewhat on this kid. We will have to show and tell some story about the kid, developing his power, whether or not he knows who his dad really is, so on and so forth. This story could have been better suited to end this new franchise. Finding out that this boy is actually the son of Superman would have been good to end the third film, if it was to go on to be a trilogy. A way to close out Clark's story and opening one up for his son.
Which leads me to the next problem with this film. There are far to many stories being told in this one film. We have Superman returning with the escape of Luthor. We have a Lois and Clark lover story, throw in White and now we have a love triangle. We have the kid to deal with and if that wasn't enough we find out that he's in fact Clark's son. This film had a two hour plus running time when it could have easily been two hours or a little less, if they would have been able to cut some of the bullshit.
And finally the biggest draw back in my eyes, the lack of a villain. The film does feature Lex Luthor but he's portrayed more as a cartoon bad guy, watching his last scene truly hurt. Luthor in my eyes is supposed to be ruthless. We never see him do an evil thing in this film once. The biggest thing he does stab Superman. His master plan is to create land using the crystals. Which will kill billions of people. His actions are driven by greed, not evil, his objected is to get rich. This film is supposed to be a continuation, of the first 2 original films, where we saw him battle Luthor in the first and later Zod in the second, it's seems as though we are back tracking. We just seen him face this cool villain in General Zod and now we are back to Luthor, he's bad ass but at the end of the day he's still just human. We can't have a film where the most evil thing Lex does is steal from an old lady.
With that said I truly hope that Singer has something better in store for the future films, this is truly a lack luster start but I truly believe that there is nowhere else to go but up.
