A blemish on the face of the He-Man legacy
27 January 2008
Deplorable. Ridiculous. Not even sub-standard fun. The anime style is annoying. The queen of Eternia has blue hair? Why is Prince Adam dressed like a shepherd? And as Prince Adam- the voice is SO gay. The lisps are unmistakable. No, being gay is not the problem. I'm gay but prefer Prince Adam/He-Man to be masculine, bold and strong. He is suppose to be the almighty defender after all. And Skeletor- yelch. NOT scary, not frightening. Why is his face green? And why did they have to change the chant that turns Adam into He-Man? "By the power of Eternia"? Um...it's "By the power of Grayskull" people!! You cannot make a Batman movie or cartoon and take him out of Gotham. Superman will always be in Metropolis. You CANNOT go changing a characters legacy just because you want to. BAD producers.

Other reviews on the net have said the show can stand on its own. Um...NO it cannot. It's a pathetic attempt to breath new life into a classic story that was in no need of CPR. Guess the old saying is true- if it ain't broke, don't fix it. For me this will be like the film Halloween 3. I will forget it ever happened.

BAD producers!!! Shame!!!

Jaws 3-D (1983)

One of my favorite top 5 films of all time!!
27 January 2008
This is one of my top 5 favorite films of all time!! Truly a poster child for the "so-bad-it's-good" genre. Yes, the shark is completely fake and ridiculous. The acting not so great either. The 3-D effects fall flat. But c'mon- it's harmless rainy afternoon kind of fun.

Dennis Quaid is hot in this film. As is John Putch. WOOF! Bess Armstrong is beyond annoying. Then again she always is. This film introduced me to Lea Thompson (one of my favorite actresses ever!!). Loved her ever since and have seen 99% of anything she has been in. "Some Kind of Wonderful" is another classic. Damn she was so fragile and beautiful in that film. You just want to protect her character from the crap around her.

Jaws 3 has a female ski team, the co-ed ski team- all being attacked by the shark. Though very little chomping takes place. *SIGH* That was disappointing. They should have included a high body count in this one. Including a chomp on Louis Gossett Jr.'s character. Hated him. I love the original movie poster. Which I got from ebay. The covers for the DVD releases of 2 - 4 suck.

Even though the real fun doesn't start until the moment that "some shark's mutha!!" starts attacking Sea World "above and below the surface of the water"- I will love this film forever!!

70's Camp at its best!!
27 January 2008
My memories of this show when it was on in the late 70's is vague. LOVED Shaun Cassidy back in the day. Not my type anymore though. Too pretty boy. But as a show it is fun. More of a Saturday morning view of detective work than say even Charlie's Angels but it is fun.

Shaun & Parker (who has not aged a bit I must say as seen recently at school events with his children) had great chemistry. Though Frank sometimes comes off as a know it all and Joe comes off a bumbling idiot. Through it all it's campy fun. The pilot episode for the boys has Parker riding a motorcycle in his boxers. Cheeky fun!! Pamela Sue Martin as Nancy Drew was nice. I really liked her stories. But reading that the producers backed off from Nancy stories as the boys proved more popular- she had an uphill battle. Shaun was THE teen idol of the day. Hit records and this show- no one could have equaled that level of popularity. The girls were more interested in Shaun & Parker. Duh!! In all honesty the shows and the supporting characters were one note performances. 99% of all of the cops/sheriffs were beyond stupid. It was the 70's after all and they never set out to make a serious drama/action show. This was not "The Streets of San Francisco" ya know. But if you were once fans of either show or the actors- check it out. It's lighthearted, campy fun for the most part.

Uneven but very romantic.
23 January 2008
I had never seen this film until moments ago. Being a long time Shelley Hack fan from her 1 season on Charlie's Angels (79-80) and her Charlie (not related to the show) perfume ad campaigns, I had always wanted to see this. Never could find it in a rental store and online purchasing was always too high for something I had never seen. But then someone was selling a VHS copy for $25.00 (incl shipping) on ebay. I got it!! Was it worth $25.00? Yes. From a Shelley Hack/Charlie's Angels collectors point of view. Yes & No from a film lovers point of view. I knew going in that if the director was also a producer, the songwriter and a star- there was going to problems. Way too many hands in way too many places. Joe Brooks was not completely awful but far from endearing. He was Ray Ramono (Everybody Love Raymond) before Ray Ramono. Very Jewish and VERY New York. Overall he was OK. But for pete's sake he should NEVER sing. Oy vay!! Shelley was quite thin to my surprise. But still luminous and I do not by any means see how/why she has been so trashed for her performance over the years. She was far better than I expected after reading the reviews. Want to see her in a bad performance? Watch "Troll" or "The Stepfather". YELCH. I really did fall for the romance and love between the two leads in this film.

The film did start out VERY slow and clunky. Not until Shelley's character comes into play does it pick up. Before she does it's bad dialouge, worse editing and even worse than that directing. I point out the entrance of Shelley's character (Jennifer) more on account of the character than Shelley herself. This is a romance film and any part without that is beyond boring. Except scenes that show Joe's character as a very loving father with his 2 children.

This was $25.00 well spent in my opinion. Shelley may never be seen as a rival to Meryl Streep but then again very few are. The errors I found with her performance (the bad overdubs, far too soft speaking manner) were the fault of her director. Not her. Not every film requires a Meryl Streep. For what appears to be only her second major (or minor) acting role I thought Shelley was very lovely. Joe and other supporting actors were far worse and deserved their biting criticisms.

Bottom line- this was not a great film. It was an enjoyable uneven film. No fault to Ms. Hack. All fault to Mr. Brooks. The theme song (sung like a bad American Idol audition by Joe) was also recorded by Roberta Flack. Her far superior version can be found and purchased via iTunes.
