Nancy Drew... Reporter (1939)
No better entertainment value
You can get this movie on DVD nearly anywhere for a dollar, usually a double feature with a Dick Tracy movie. It is well worth the investment. It is fast paced, and entertaining. Bonita Granville could give any current teen queens a run for their money. The other main character, Ted, (played by Frank Thomas, Jr.) reminds me of a young Jimmy Stewart. Also,in this movie, two other child actors play roles that were probably used as the basis for ChimChim and Spreidel in the Speed Racer cartoons. They are annoying, popping up throughout the movie, but show off their talent in a musical number. Great voices! The story also gives a look at what life was like in the 1930s. At least for the upper middle class. It is interesting to see the old cars and camera equipment used by Nancy and her "boyfriend". This movie is great for families with teens and small children. Adults will also find the hour long movie worthwhile.
War of the Worlds (2005)
Suspenseful but illogical
Why did the aliens bury machines over a million years ago? Why not take over the planet then? Why did the force fields lose their resistance when the aliens got sick? My car works fine when I'm not feeling well.
The entire episode with Tim Robbins added nothing to the movie. It should have been deleted.
How did the son survive? They should have killed him off.
Why were the aliens disintegrating the humans early in the movie, sucking their blood in the middle, and then capturing them at the end? But despite all the plot flaws, the movie was suspenseful and held your interest.
Pleasantville (1998)
Do not waste time on this movie.
This movie was awful. It made no sense. It strayed from one plot line to another. The characters were unbelievable. If you have never seen this movie. DON'T. You will have wasted 2 hours of your life better spent watching whatever was on the WB network. The only thing that would have saved this movie would have been if Tobey Maguire would have been bitten by a radioactive spider, but it wasn't going to happen in this movie. Or if at the end of the movie, Reese Witherspoon was on her way to Harvard. What was the message of this movie? Have sex, see things in color? Or old TV shows need more sex scenes? What did Malcolm's mom have to do with anything? Awful.
