Cradle of Fear (2001)
Should not disappoint anyone
First of all, no one except people below the age of 15 and right wing Christians will ever be scarred of Dani Filth. So a movie with him as the main villain will have that against it from the beginning. But apart from that this is a fun, gory, flawed B-movie.
Considering the opening line of this review, you will probably guess that I'm not a big Cralde of Filth fan. I listen to them maybe once a year or so, but there are much more interesting black metal out there by far, and far more interesting artists.
The movie is basically an anthology consisting of four segments linked together by a main story about a hypnotist serial killer occultist at a mental asylum, taking his revenge on the people responsible for his incarceration through occult means and with the help of the character played by Dani Filth.
I was 19 when this movie came out and I watched it almost immediately. Back then I really liked CoF, even though I would not say I was a fan then either. I would also say that I still think the uncensored version of "From cradle to enslave" is a really neat music video. The point of this is that a movie which CoF are involved in comes with certain expectations when it comes to gore and nudity. And here the movie delivers. I remember that I liked the movie back then and when I re-watched it yesterday I still liked it, even though I have changed my opinion about the band.
The movie is very heavy on the gore, contains some nudity and the gore looks rather good for the most part, considering this is a low budget movie. The acting is not good but not terrible either, the music is okay and naturally features songs by CoF, even though there are only two and I think also one intro song to one of their albums. In spite of its cheesiness, the movie also many times manages to get the mood right and although I find it too long it never really gets boring. The main story and the stories of the segments aren't that bad either. There are some really bad effects though, but they are not the gory ones. There are some car scenes with for example a car crash, which I had a hard time telling how it was made, only that it really looked fake. Like the car was cut into the scene in some really weird way.
I honestly don't see how you could expect more than a cheesy movie with a lot of gore and nudity from this one. And this is what you get. I really have a hard time seeing how anyone can be disappointed by it. I think that maybe, at least with some individuals, some movies you are just not supposed to like if you are a certain type of person. That is of course not to say that people can't have legitimate reasons for disliking this movie. That is why I said "some individuals."
The Green Inferno (2013)
Over hyped but still acceptable
So was this movie worth the wait? Not really, but still fun to watch.
So, college kids travels to the Peru jungle to expose a corporation trying to force away natives from their land. They end up crashing with their plane and captured by cannibals.
The movie starts off slow but has an acceptable back story so it's okay. When the gore finally starts we get some nasty stuff, but it could have definitely been more. I would have particularly liked to see some more tributes to the kind of gore portrayed in Cannibal Holocaust. And honestly, even though it's always fun seeing people getting slaughtered no matter what sex they are, I would have liked to see some more graphic butchering of females. I'm not a misogynist (and not a feminist either), but come on, this is what we all want to see when we watch a movie like this one.
The make up could have honestly been better. I think they over did it. The actors playing cannibals looks very much just like that - actors playing cannibals. Deodato and Lenzi managed to do much better with much less. Some of the scenes were difficult to make sense of, like the scene where the kids are fed by the cannibals. But I won't go into detail of this since that would be a spoiler. There was some cynical social commentary which I personally liked, which also was present in the films this one payed homage to.
All in all, far from Roth's best and really over-hyped. But still an entertaining movie with some nice gore scenes. Know what to expect and you won't be that disappointed.
Fantacide (2007)
This movie has everything!!!
Nazis, nudity, homosexuality, rape, bestiality, gerontophilia (it's when you are relatively young and like to have sex with old people), sadomasochism, sexism, sexual violence, plenty of gore and politically incorrect jokes. Well, it even has some gerontophile Nazi homosexuality and some weird social commentary. And I have probably forgotten something. Also the killings of women are very sexist.
The plot goes something like this: A journalist tries to find his partner and teams up with a former detective. The partner got killed by a Nazi cult when they stumbled onto one of the cults rituals and the journalist got knocked unconscious. While looking for the partner they stumble onto something bigger, namely that the Nazi cult is after some kind of occult spear with which they hope to resurrect Hitler and the third Reich or something like that.
Of course you can't judge this kind of movie by the same standards as a Hollywood-film. I would say with a budget of 6000£, the fx of this film is outstanding. Honestly, the gore is great and outranks many movies with 20 times the budget of this one. And I really want to stress this: considering the budget, this movie is a real accomplishment.
Also, the acting is quite OK for a low budget movie. I mean, of course it sucks, but the characters manages to be funny and I really don't think you can expect more than that.
The soundtrack is sometimes extremely funny, mainly when it consists of perky old-school pop (not sure if it actually is pop, but it sound popisch, perky and 1950s old anyway). The soundtrack actually made me laugh out loud a couple of times. Especially look out for the song in the bestiality scene. Make sure you listen to the lyrics.
If I should complain about something, it is that this film is too long. Many scenes could have been shortened considerably without loosing anything, so much that it would probably not have had to be longer than maybe 1:20. Low budget gore also generally works better if it's a little shorter.
Also, the sometimes coarse accent would have called for some subtitles, especially because the dialog is most of the time really funny if one manage to follow it. So Shane Mathers, if you by any chance read this review, for the next project after "Terror nation", please make it a little shorter and ad some subtitles, in case you're still using actors with coarse accent. Other than that, keep up the good work!
And finally, of course this movie is not for everyone. If you haven't seen any low budget gore before, if you don't like the genre or have a weak stomach, chances are you won't like this movie. Or if you are a politically correct douche bag that feels like taking a dump every time someone tells a racist or sexist joke, you will probably hate it (and this review, since you think I'm being ignorant and intolerant of your relation towards your opinions, and your need to take them deadly serious or something like that). But if you are not snobbish when it comes to budget and you have a sense of humor, you will probably love it. And to be clear, the point of having racist or sexist jokes is of course not to make a serious statement, but to offend. So if you've gotten offended, well... mission accomplished!
I would also recommend not being completely sober when you watch it. You don't have to be drunk (or stoned if that is what you prefer) out of your mind. But a little buzz will surely enhance the experience.
Funny Games (1997)
The very definition of a clever disturbing movie
I can without exaggeration say I have seen almost everything there is to see when it comes to disturbing movies, and yet I think "Funny games" might have been the one that moved me the most. At least it's among the top 3. This movie is not gratifying in the least, and that is what makes it so powerful (even though I totally enjoy gratifying movie violence as well). I haven't really gotten into the home invasion genre that much, but those movies I have seen so far have been quite good. But in spite of that I can almost with complete confidence say that this is by far the best one out there. It's so good you might consider skipping the rest of the movies in the genre. Or perhaps not. "The last house on the left" is also very good. And if you like the genre "The house on the edge of the park" is OK also. But "Funny games" is definitely crushing the competition.
So the story is simple enough. A father, a mother and their kid goes on vacation in a secluded house near the sea. There two men in their early twenties shows up, first acting friendly, but soon starts act weird. The weirdness escalates to mild harassment, followed by violence and from then on it gets worse.
There is very little blood in the movie and no graphic violence whatsoever. Everything is implied. What this movie does is playing extremely heavy on the emotions, which is done with almost perfect balance. An excellent example is the scene that follows the first kill.
And balance is the key word for the entire movie. The music score is limited to when the characters plays music, which was an excellent choice. This movie does not need music to lift the emotional tension! The little music there is features, together with some great classical music, music by the extremely talented, multifaceted and to most people unknown musician John Zorn.
Also, three or four times, one of the killers turns to face the viewer, making comments about what is going on in the movie, which is also made in a very balanced way. It could be seen as a cheap move, but here it really works and ads to the overall feeling. Two reasons why it works, is because it is done very moderately, with three or four very short segments, and because of what is said.
You also get to know the family a bit, just enough to like them. They are intelligent, kind people with good taste and they have an intelligent, well mannered kid. In many violent movies these days the victims are either not likable or you don't get to know them at all.
The killers are also interesting. You don't get to know anything for sure about their backgrounds, but they are well mannered, calm and seemingly friendly. And the point is, they don't seem to have any reason whatsoever for doing what they are doing. There is in general a lot going on with the ways the killers behave and talk, but I will leave that to you to figure out. But keeping that in mind will probably enhance your experience of the movie.
The acting is great both when it comes to the family and the killers. The emotions portrayed are very convincing, and the killers are creepy in a very unique way.
This movie is about making the viewer reflect over how he/she views violence in modern culture. In my view it does this without being preachy. It is a clever reflection over senseless violence, where the senselessness and sorrow, rather than the violence, is rubbed in the viewers face. I felt really empty after watching this movie. And again, this was done in a very minimalistic way. I don't give out a lot of 10:s, but I think this move definitely deserves it.
100 Tears (2007)
Stupid and monotonous, but great gore
Like another reviewer pointed out, this style of splatter probably has its roots in Germany, with directors like Andreas Schnaas, Olaf Ittenbach and Timo Rose. Both when it comes to the style of the gore and the way of making a script I would say. The gore is great and they have really tried making a serious plot, but ended up with a plot that is very unrealistic, and to say it plainly, stupid.
Let me explain by giving you the basics of the story. It is about two tabloid journalists writing an article about serial killers and trying to track down a serial killer wearing clown make up. So far it sounds OK, right? But the thing is the clown has killed over 160 people over a period of over 20 years, he has done nothing to cover his tracks and it takes the journalists a couple of days to figure out that the killings has always occurred in the vicinity of a circus. By some really lousy detective work they manage to track down the killer in a week or so, which the FBI has tried for 20 years!
I would compare this movie to Brian Paulins films, which also are German-style American splatter. They suffer from the same faults of bad story and bad acting, but makes up for it when it comes to the gore. And really, that is what is important here, right? I mean, sure I can enjoy deep relational dramas or clever social commentary, but when I watch a movie like 100 tears, I expect decapitation, torture, blood and guts. Watching a movie like this one for the story would make as much sense as watching a porno for the story. And the gore is great. Loads of blood and intestines throughout the whole movie. And the fx are good too for a low budget movie. But it becomes a little monotonous as the killer almost always uses the huge meat cleaver or whatever the weapon is supposed to be.
Also, the soundtrack is most of the times pretty good. The soundtrack includes weird but good music by The voodoo organist and Voltaire, which I would not be able to define the genre of and a dark hardcore song, which also is good. One complaint here is that the movie could have used some more songs, instead of re-using the same over and over again. So, monotony is sadly something that spoils the good parts of this movie a little on several levels. But not that much. When it comes to the soundtrack it's really a very minor complaint.
Well, that's my take on it. Turn off your brain for a while and enjoy the gore. And if that isn't your cup of blood, stay away from this one.
Violent Shit (1989)
Two people beat me to making a funny comment about the title and the quality of the move.
And yes, to state it clearly, this movie is exactly what the title says. This movie is about K. the butcher shitter, who walks around in the countryside and in the forest killing people, coupled with two scenes I guess showing how his abusive mother made him into a psycho killer. And that pretty much sums it all up.
Before I begin the trashing, I want to say that I actually liked this movie, and would recommend it to anyone who can appreciate no-budget splatter, who can look past all the blunders made by Schnaas and appreciate the violence, the effort and all Schnaas' contributions to German low budget gore.
Yes, there is a huge amount of gore in this movie, but the fx is so bad (somewhat creative however) that there is no way to take it seriously. Also there is a huge weirdness factor in this film. Like the scene where K. is a child where there is some random demon guy who talks to him while he is locked in the basement, a scene where K. find a crucified Christ in the woods and decides to crawl into his stomach and maybe weirdest of all, a more than three minute scene of just looking through the windshield of a car while driving on a small dirt road in nighttime, while a bad heavy metal song is played in the background. To ad to the weirdness, you would expect there to be some comedy in a film where the name of the lead is K. the butcher shitter. There is none. There is also some weird image filter used sometimes, which makes the image grainy and the framing choppy (I don't know what the effect is called, but the movement looks kind of like a slow stroboscope), which is just plain annoying and serves no purpose whatsoever. Schnaas also clearly knew nothing about editing and camera work since almost every scene has confusing changes in perspective and the cutting is many times abominably bad (remember, this is Schnaas' first movie and he has bettered himself since).
So why would I still recommend this film? First of all, is's extremely violent and just for that I think it's worth seeing. If you can look past how bad all the gore looks, there is plenty to spare. You will never get bored, because the violent scenes are extremely frequent throughout the movie. Also, the weirdness doesn't have to be a bad thing. It is actually quite funny. Also, even though he didn't speak one word, I liked K. the butcher shitter, as he is quite freaky. Furthermore Schnaas is a guy who clearly is passionate about what he is doing, and every gore hound should appreciate that. So this is a really bad film, but it's a fun bad film. If, after reading this review, you still feel like seeing it, you will probably like it.
American Mary (2012)
I want to marry the Soska sisters
I want to marry the Soska sisters, but so would probably every male horror lover in the world. But I would probably settle for being their pet if they asked me.
Anyway, American Mary is about Mary, a promising medical student, who has financial troubles, so she decides to try stripping, but instead ends up performing surgery on a beat up snitch, when the owner of the strip club convinces her with plenty of money. I would give away the story if I told you too much more of what happens, besides that Mary ends up performing illegal, extreme body modifications, while at the same time having some other secrets.
This is a very interesting and original film. The only horror film about body modification besides this one I can think of is Strangeland, which also is a very good film, but completely different from this one. I also think it's cool that they have brought in a guy who has real body modifications. Apart from that, the violence is well balanced, leaving some, but not too much, to the imagination. It also has some other really bizarre and interesting female characters beside Mary. I think movies like May, Alyce and now American Mary is showing that women are capable of making scary killers on their own terms with their own particular style very well. A lot of the older female killers has been characters that didn't differ that much from male killer and they also most of the time failed in being genuinely scary. This is not the case with those new ones.
This is also, to my knowledge the first of those films that has a female director, and here there is two of them! And they are a couple of freaky, beautiful twins! Apart from that I also have a hard time deciding which one I liked best, this one or Alyce. Overall I would say this one is better, but Alyce has some peaks which American Mary doesn't reach. Anyway, luckily you don't have to choose, so see them both!
And I really hope to see more from the Soska sisters soon. They are both talented and cool. And I also want to say that I found out that the film had female directors after I watched it.
Snuff 102 (2007)
3,7? What the f***???
OK, first of all, if you get offended by extreme films, then don't f****** watch a movie called Snuff 102 and give it a bad rating because you can't take the content! This is quite a rare movie, so most of you who watched it must have sought it out and that means you must have had some idea what the movie was about.
Second, morals has nothing to do with the quality of a movie or any product of creativity whatsoever! And that is not an opinion. That is a fact! If you think about it, you will hopefully realize why. Being a vegan, I find yhe animal killings repulsive, even though I can sort of understand their purpose, since the whole film is basically about slaughter. And I don't think the animals are killed exclusively for the film. But regardless of the conclusions I draw from moral speculations, I won't let that affect my overall opinion about the quality of the movie, since it has absolutely nothong to do with it.
I would say this movie, together with A Serbian film, is the best extreme horror since Cannibal holocaust.
The movie is about a reporter investigating snuff and interviewing a guy that seams to be some kind of expert on the subject with a background in sociology and analytical psychology. I don't know if I missed something, but I found it unclear why this guy was interviewed.
The imagery is brutal and very well made. Some of the FX looks very real. And one of the scenes actually is real. It is taken from the internet and were shot during the Iraq-war. Even though I find the moral of including this clip questionable, I think it is somewhat defensible, sice it's not Peralta's clip at all, and serves both the purpose of showing the harsh reality and what exists on the internet. But be that as it may, I still would have preferred not seeing that. Still doesn't affect the quality of the film in itself though.
The movie is painful to watch for all the right reasons. It displays several slow scenes of extreme torture and murder together with an awesome industrial soundtrack, which really helps setting the mood. It is not the most brutal film I have seen. The vomit gore trilogy is still way worse. A Serbian film and August Underground's mordum is also worse and I think the uncut version of Cannibal holocaust is as brutal as this one.
And the downsides (apart from some really questionable morals, which still don't have anything to do with the quality)? I could really only think of one: The story in all its simplicity, is a little hard to understand. I guess it is supposed to be in a nightmarish sort of way, but still, if you are going to have a story to go with the violence and the message at all, why not make the small effort to make the parts of it comprehensible? It would only make the movie better. I am thinking of the mentioned "expert" mainly. Why not just tell the viewer why he was interviewed in the first place. I must say though that I was a little drunk when I saw the movie, so I might have missed it. But I was only a little drunk, so I don't think so.
Overall , extreme horror is at its best, I think, when it says something about the times we live in. And this film really succeeds well with this. The man getting interviewed really has interesting things to say about our culture, no matter if you agree with what he is saying. I would say that his analysis is more insightful than what you can get out of most films that has a message. I found his comment about pornography to be especially interesting. With this in mind the brutal imagery works really well when it comes to underlining and hammering in the message.
The Bunny Game (2011)
Do you think torture porn in black and white with no blood and where no one dies would make a great movie? Then this one is for you!
One of the worst things I know is when someone tries to be original with a really crappy idea.
As some other reviewer pointed out, this movie has sort of a plot. It's about a prostitute doing what prostitutes do, until she runs into the wrong customer, who kidnaps her, drives out into the the middle of nowhere with her in his truck and tortures her for a week or so in the back of the truck. That's about it.
First of all I think that I have the right to expect a movie of this genre to be violent. Unless of course it has a really good plot or delivers a powerful message or something like that. Which it doesn't. The story is almost nonexistent. I know it's supposed to deliver some moral message about prostitution. This is as much a failure as the rest of this garbage: Oh really? Some drug-addicted prostitutes live crappy lives and gets hurt by some customers? And here I thought they all lived really great lives. Wow, this is an eye-opener!
When I watched this movie I waited through the whole movie for something interesting to happen, and then the credits rolled. There are some sex and nudity, but if that is what you're interested in, rent a porn instead. When it comes to the torture, I'm sure being locked in the back of a truck for a week and getting slapped and yelled at now and then is a very traumatic experience, but it is not very interesting to watch in a movie. The scene where she gets branded is about as brutal as it gets and that scene is extremely lame. The black and white only ads to the dullness and the artsy filming and editing is just annoying.
The only reasons I didn't give this movie a 1 is because 1: the acting doesn't suck completely. It's not great, but it's not bad either and way above average for a low budget movie. And 2: because the soundtrack sometimes is pretty cool if you like aggressive music. But it's nowhere near to not make me wish I could get my 1 h 15 min back. This was the biggest waste of time in a long time for me. Unless you get off from being bored i recommend you stay away from this one!
The Human Centipede II (Full Sequence) (2011)
A beautiful movie about following your dreams against all odds
Martin is a mentally challenged man with asthma who has been molested by his father when he was a child and who lives with his mother who verbally abuses him. In spite all his hardships he still has a dream. The dream is to make a human centipede consisting of twelve people! And against all odds he dedicates his life to pursuing this dream.
Yes, that is the story, but seriously this is a pretty sick movie. So if you, like me, love sick movies, you will probably not be disappointed. It is also, like the first film, quite innovative (even though, if you think sick movies needs to justify themselves with social commentary or something like that - look elsewhere). But this one is much sicker. I must also say that the acting by Laurence R. Harvey was outstanding, which lifted the movie even more.
I was a little skeptical about the black and white, but I can tell you that this movie is really worth watching anyway. But this is still an issue for me though, and the reason why I gave it an 8 instead of a 10. I could not see any direct purpose of making this movie in black and white, and it would have been even better in color. But as I said, don't let it scare you away. If you like sick movies it is still a damned good movie!
Ett hål i mitt hjärta (2004)
Grows on you
After I saw this movie I felt like I had to comment on it. Most of the movie takes place in an apartment, where a father lives together with his son. The son is a silent outsider who spends most of his time silent in his room, listening to weird music. The father records amateur porn together with another man and a woman. They are all very sad people. I hadn't read much about the movie before I saw it and at first I thought it was an attempt to strike at the porn industry, so I started to suspect something really stupid. I have never been able to stand that kind of moral in movies. After a while I understood that I was completely wrong. This was for me a movie about good people, not being able to do anything but bad things, because they have been broken down by different tragedies. If you want to see a chocking movie, this one contains plenty of chocking material but nothing that is disgusting in any pleasant way. I have watched too many sick movies to be disgusted by anything that i see on the screen, but the disturbing scenes in this movie didn't bring out a smile like they usually do when you watch something really sick in a movie that is intended only to gross people out. No they really added to the sad feeling and made me think about all the tragic lives out in the real world. The movie grew on me in a way no movie has ever done before and those who call it pointless must have just failed to see the point of it. This movie is definitely not for everyone and if you truly understand it, you will feel like the title after watching it.
