Three Months (2022)
Really didn't expect to enjoy this so much
I watched this purely because Troye Sivan was in it and I wanted to support him. To be perfectly honest, I wasn't expecting it to actually be good, was hoping it would at least be mid.
I'm actually kinda shocked to say I loved it! The acting was surprisingly good, especially for what I've seen of him so far. This is the best acting I've seen from him in any of his projects. I loved the characters, all of them. The premise of the story seemed kind of tired, but again, I absolutely loved the execution.
I saw a few people talking about how the story didn't delve into darkness and kept things too light, and I'm honestly puzzled by this critique. Yeah, it wasn't Euphoria, but the despair, longing and loneliness came through loud and clear for me.
Even being a fan of Troye, I wasn't expecting this to be good, but I genuinely thought it was pretty fantastic.
Sex Education (2019)
Masterpiece
Season 3 absolutely solidified this as a masterpiece. This show is stupid good.
Moxie (2021)
Heartwarming
Honestly such a cute film. Was feeling kinda down and this movie was the perfect pick-me up, with only a few kinda cringe moments. Nice, light film with very likeable characters, and Nico Hiraga's character is a dream.
Supernatural: #thinman (2014)
Worst since Season 7
Man, this episode was noticeable terrible. The acting SUCKED (not from the boys of course), the direction was weird, the story was awful. Can be skipped and not a single thing would be missed from the overarching story, except for a VERY forced parallel between the Ghostfacer's drama and the tension between Sam and Dean.
The K2 (2016)
Wasted Potential
Man this one had so much potential. It started out with a bang and i was really excited as I could sense this would be good. And then...the plot limped along like it had been shot in the leg and was, very slowly, bleeding to death. The plot stopped making sense. The action stopped making sense and seemed almost by rote. And the love story was AWFUL. Absolutely awful. Like, so unbelievably bad it killed the entire show. The pacing for this was just terrible. By the time I dragged myself over half the episodes, I was begging for it to be over already. I was trying to skip through the love story to get to the plot, but the plot was already so convoluted that I felt I couldn't really skip through much. I couldn't take it any more and stopped after episode 12. Such a shame because the actors were actually pretty good, with maybe an exception for the main girl. She was fine, but I thought she was the weak link in the bunch.
Barely Lethal (2015)
They didn't take it seriously
I thought this would be some harmless, low-key fun. With the premise and all the star power, I was really looking forward to this one. I wasn't expecting anything deep or amazing, just an enjoyable, uncomplicated action flick about badass teen assassins. Anna was fun. Violet and Daisy was fun. This was...extremely juvenile. More reminiscent of Stormbreaker than Final Girl. What I mean is...they didn't take this movie seriously. They didn't follow through on the premise and just go with it, they turned it into a kiddy movie...but not the kind even adults could enjoy. Really disappointing.
Extraction (2020)
Exactly what you think it is
This was fine for what it was, which was a mindless action flick. No plot, minimal character development, and even then only for Hemsworth, and lots of explosions and CGI muzzle flares. Still, a great movie to chill out with while turning off your brain and munching some popcorn. And Hemsworth was really great in it. He did a good job emoting, since he wasn't given a whole lot of dialogue to work with.
All the Bright Places (2020)
Wasted Potential
The material itself was middling at best and was elevated, as much as it could be, by the fantastic acting. It really seemed like it was going somewhere and then just...stopped abruptly. Honestly felt very underdeveloped. The ending brought what was maybe an 8 star movie down to a 5 star. Not because of the twist at the end, because they seemed to shy away from really diving into the darkness of mental illness and settled for being a mediocre romance movie instead. Fine movie, but really wasted potential.
Altered Carbon (2018)
Tough
This one is tough to review because it is so uneven. The first season was darn near perfect. The second season...not so much. In fact, I stopped watching the second season a little past the halfway point. The first season is rich, noir-dark and delves into the very nature of what it means to be human while examining the moral implications of being able to live forever. The second season...is an action flick where a guy we no longer recognize is trying to find his girlfriend. But do watch the first season, it's incredible.
Preacher (2016)
Stick With It
Ok, I started watching this show when it first came out and quickly gave up on it. I'd never read the comics, so had no loyalty to it from that front. The acting? Absolutely amazing. The cinematography? Perfect. The characters? Fully fleshed out and incredibly interesting. The problem? There seemed to be no plot and not a single thing made sense. Things just happened and I'm like, what the heck is going on? What's the point?
I'm telling you, stick the frick with it. I randomly decided to give it another shot and just get through the first season, and holy moley. Once things came together, they came together. All those random things that had been happening? Not so random. This is literally one of the most brilliant shows I've ever watched, and each season only gets better. Season three was practically orgasmic. I haven't seen season four yet, but have no doubt this upward trend will continue.
I am actually gutted that it's ended, but I understand why it might not have done so well in the ratings. It likes to stew in its own juices and the casual viewer might give up on it before they really understand how incredibly unique and fantastic the show is.
Warm Bodies (2013)
Not at all what I expected
When I saw the trailer for this movie, it honestly looked really dumb. Like, Twilight for Zombies. Also didn't help that Teresa Palmer really reminds me of Kirsten Stewart for some reason. However, within the first 5 minutes, you realize that the movie doesn't plan to go down that road. R's inner dialogue was hilarious and this was more of an off-beat comedy than a romance. That being said, the relationship between R and Julie was really cute and innocent. Sure, it started a little unconventionally, but it was strong enough to literally change the world. Nicholas Hoult is just too adorable as R. His mannerisms, facial expressions and inner monologue are great. Don't judge a movie by its trailer I guess. The story is simple and the miracle at the end is not really explained, but hey. Give this a try, it might surprise you.
The Rules of Attraction (2002)
Terrible. Just Terrible
I don't understand how anyone can like this movie. It was awful...really bad. I seriously thought I'd wasted almost 2 hours of my life. 20 minutes into the movie, I had a sinking feeling, but I grimly watched it until the end hoping it would get better. It doesn't. It's so pointless and trying way too hard to be unaffected. That being said, Ian was fantastic in his role, and a certain scene of his set to 'Faith' by George Michael did make me grin like an idiot. But it wasn't enough. Not nearly enough. Finding out who was leaving the mystery letters was interesting, but I just found this movie really stupid and pointless.
Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You (2011)
I thought I had this movie pegged
This movie kind of reminds me of The Art of Getting By, but the main character was not as likable or accessible. Most of the time, I though he was annoying and affected. Many of the scenes rang false and the accompanying dialogue seemed to be written by a first-year psychologist student. However, the saving grace is the second-half of the film. Once the life-coach aspect comes into play, the movie improves dramatically. The main character's scenes with Lucy Lu felt real and not like the psycho-analysis that permeated the first-half of the movie. I really enjoyed the scenes in Washington and they really captured the claustrophobic feeling of the main character. Finally seeing what happened made the main character more sympathetic and less insufferable. Decent film
