Under the Dome (2013)
I thought it was just me
I'm glad I came to IMDb and read some reviews of Under the Dome. I didn't watch it when it ran, but have been encouraged by a couple of friends to get caught up before the June 30th premiere of Season 2. I am a huge fan of Stephen King, although I agree with others that not all of his works translate well to screen adaptation. This is a perfect example.
This is, in my humble opinion, the worst of the worst. The first 10 or 15 minutes are interesting enough, but after that - the dome is hardly featured and mentioned even less. The DJ and radio station engineer characters have been seen hundreds of times, in hundreds of movies. The actress who plays the newspaper editor relies too much on her looks when she should be acting. The lesbian couple and their crappy kid are totally unnecessary. The only good thing in this show IS the dome......which you can't even see.
Shame on you, Stephen. You sold us out.
Dear God (1996)
Eh.....
I wish there was a rating between "Liked it" and "Didn't Like It". Because although I didn't DISlike this movie, I can't actually say I LIKED it either. Very lame and weak in a lot of places - Tim Conway gives a GREAT performance as the burned out postal worker. The other performances are just adequate, and that's being kind. I am big fan of Laurie Metcalfe, but this is not a shining moment for her. Ellen Cleghorn's attempt at an accent fails miserably, and Greg Kinnear is not believable as a bad guy. The premise of the story is cute.....but the story sputters to it's predictable ending...and takes too long to get there.
Birth (2004)
Horrible!
This movie is one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life, and I have seen LOTS of movies. The story is convoluted and ridiculous (as well as difficult to watch - pedophilia is never pretty). The performances are inconsequential here.....the story is so bad, no actors could've saved this movie. (Having said that, I can't believe Nicole Kidman agreed to be in this turkey. How could the script possibly read any better than this movie turned out to be)? Add to that the attempt to make this an "artsy" movie, with long close-ups and music that does not (IN ANY WAY) match the scene in which it is playing......truly HORRIBLE movie.
The 4400 (2004)
Great!
I was told about The 4400 after the beginning of Season 2, and saw Season 1 on DVD. I was instantly obsessed with this show! By the time I had finished the 1st season, it was too late to come into Season 2, as I had missed a few episodes by that time. As soon as I heard that Season 2 was out, I watched all of that, which brought me into Season 3, three episodes behind. I found those online, and was finally caught up enough to watch it with everyone else this past Sunday. The 4400 is a great show, very interesting with intricate plot twists and evolving characters. The writing is far better than anything on television these days, and the acting is Emmy-worthy. This is the best network show I've seen for years!
Car Wash (1976)
I loved this movie
I'm not sure why, but I loved this movie. I saw it as a young teenager, and I saw it many times. A day-in-the-life of the Dee-luxe Car Wash and the employees is very funny. There is no plot, but the ensemble cast is excellent, and the chemistry between the characters is great! They are believable as co-workers/friends, and you get to know each character (a bit) by the end of the movie. Franklin Ajaye is great as TJ. The soundtrack is awesome! The slice-of-life format is interesting, and keeps you involved with each character fairly equally. George Carlin's cameo is good, and Richard Pryor in a cameo with the Pointer Sisters is great! This is a movie you'll either love or hate.....I loved it!
The Amityville Horror (2005)
Could've been so much better
This movie was a great disappointment to me, mainly because the original was, at the very least, an okay-scary-movie. Even back then, James Brolin and Margot Kidder were not the best actors in the world, but they were familiar, at least...the story itself was a new subject for the time, and I was entertained. I had been under the impression that this movie was a "remake" of the original, yet the story played out differently. The main problem I had with this film was that I never could make myself care what happened to any of the characters. I didn't feel a connection with anyone, and the main characters were little more than adequate in their roles. The "boo-factor" alone just doesn't cut it anymore. It definitely could've been much, much better.
The Village (2004)
disappointing ending
I looked forward to seeing this movie, as I am a big fan of Shymalan.I thought this movie was pretty good, but it should have ended before it did. After the reveal of the "twist", the rest of the movie was pointless, and it ended leaving the audience feeling dissatisfied (at least it left me feeling that way). Long, drawn-out story, and a sudden ending do not make for a good movie-going experience. I must say that the performance of Bryce Dallas Howard was very good (although I didn't believe she was blind even for a second), and Adrien Brody was adequate in his role. I think Shymalan needs to understand that after "The Sixth Sense", the audience is now looking for these twists, and he'll have to go some to beat the shocking ending of that one. This one didn't even come close.
