Cidade de Deus (2002)
I do not like this movie
This movie makes me sick. The main psychopath who walks around shooting 6 years olds for fun, learned how fun it was as an 8 year old laughing maniacally while shooting people In a brothel mid act. And this kids best friends are nice sweet boys with hearts of gold and jealous romances that turn sour in the end... I... i... I have absolutely no idea why these kids are not mortified by this monster!
There's gang violence and all that, I think it's respectable to what the favelas are like atmospherically, or so I understand. But how could anyone consider lil Ze a friend in any way, shape, or form if they were not also a violent psychopath? It's like the filmmakers are condoning this behavior vicariously. I hate it!
Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
Why does it take so long to meet the Toons?
The toons are the reason to come see this thing!
In the Original MJ made a few hoops as a kid talking about his dreams with his father, jump cut to him owning his future. Bam. Boom. We got it him under two minutes and we meet the toons All of them together, Michael pops up like twice in between loony mayhem. In this one, Lebron is Has to do A handshake with his mother and get some backstory, (which won't be showing up later). He plays more than one game under the worst athletics coach in his schools history, and 5 minutes later we meet his kid Who has a whole lotta backstory, and a half hour later we meet Bugs, The one and only toon in all of toon world. Why does it take so long to meet the Toons!!! The Toons are the reason to come and see this thing? Why would it take so long too See them ?!?!
When you finally do you half to wade through a half hour of commercials, And then when they finally get together they're not Toons Anymore. They're some weird, angry mob made of money Swimming in Subscription services. It's until the end it finally becomes a Pepsi Commercial.
Daffy has a few good lines, as do the rest of the toons, and the Basketball game was creative. The video game aspect was creative and cool. There wasn't a whole lot of banter and one of the reasons for that is you din't get to know who the enemies were. Not really. They got a freeze frame introduction but there was no individuality. All the personality was in Al and Lebron's kid. They tried so hard to make us care about this story and I did not. Something about creating a video. Al-Gor-rythm wanted something, I think It was to win a Basketball game. I'm not really sure why... it sounded really convoluted and therefore important so I just went numb and accepted it. They played basketball the banter just wasn't there. There was no back and forth and back and forth it just kind of swung one way once, held that spot for a moment and then went the other way.
I guess You can change Lola's design, They changed everyone else's and to be honest, as they tried to go for a much more dramatic tone her new design seemed to fit this new film a bit better, She didn't crack a single joke so why give her anything that would make Bugs go GaGa? I expected her to make more than one basket... or at least score some style points with it. I mean she was the only person on the team to score a total of 2 points. Lebron score 37 or whatever on his first shot. Story wise they gave that shot to Lola because they needed to bring the game closer so that the toons only needed one more basket to win, (it was like 1038 to 1035, Lola brought them to 1037), but Wiley Coyote got like 600. Why not let Lola earn some style too, being the only baller on the team. She friggin coached them!
It just didn't have any wit or charm in it. I mean their was some wit, but it came sandwiched in a lot of greed. And I don't want to be sold a subscription to HBO MAX. I want to see my Toons. I bought the ticket which means the previews run before the beginning and not throughout the entire film. And the writer's kind lost track over who and what this store is actually about.
Hell and Back (2015)
This movie is like a game of hopscotch...
What does that mean? Well, I jump from enjoying it to not enjoying and back again.
The animation is exquisite, the acting is exquisite, the characters are distinct and fun, the story is really clever and the music is awesome...
But the one-liners! Oh my God, the characters cannot go anywhere do anything or barely move the story along without saying something obnoxious. For every funny joke in the film there's like 20 obnoxious ones! I would have loved this in middle school when we were hitting puberty and learning how to be radical, so maybe this movie is for them.
That being said i've watched this movie a lot. There was so much atmosphere and passion in the thing that it was my go to during an emotionally trying time. It just seemed to have that very strong distracting quality you look for in good entertainment.
But it's still a 6 because there is A LOT of stupid, pointless, strangle the bobble head one-liners! It's going to kill it for most people.
