Napoleon (2023)
What an awful experience
Please lower your expectations before going to watch this historically inaccurate movie. The cinematography, costumes and the actress that portrayed Josephine are the main standouts in the film. Other than that it's not a movie that I would recommend. Granted, if you know nothing about Napoleon Bonaparte you might enjoy it for what it is. But for those who know of his history will be thoroughly disappointed. I believe the film should've been at least 3 hours 30 mins. They tried to cram too much with too little time so everything felt rushed. I really wanted to like it and I found some redeeming qualities about it but it wasn't enough for me to give it anything higher than a 1. Ridley Scott used to be a good director but now he's just somebody who used to make good movies that were actually worth watching. He should be ashamed of himself for releasing this dud.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Floppenheimer (Maybe not)
3 hours I can't get back. I fed into the hype. The countless news articles and YouTube videos about the movie. And then I watched it...Boy was I disappointed. I should've known better. Oppenheimer is a very boring and tedious film. It requires your FULL attention and I'm not a fan of that. The scenes were way too long and the pacing was slow as a snail. What did I expect? An action film or a thriller? It's a biography about the brilliant mind(s) behind one of the most pivotal moments in world history. Having said that, it doesn't make the movie likable in my opinion. On a positive note the acting and cinematography was great. Everything else was meh.
Uncharted (2022)
Uninteresting
One of the worst movies in the past 10 years. Miscast, ok action and a very weak script make this a film I highly suggest you look the other way on. What were they thinking casting Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg as the leads? Heck, I would've accepted Morgan Freeman as Sully and Channing Tatum as Drake. This is an obvious cash grab at it's worst. Hopefully it flops so any future sequels are cancelled.
Scream (2022)
Shrill
We just got back from watching Scream and we were severely disappointed by what was being presented to us. Wes Craven is rolling around in his grave and I don't blame him. The film tries to relive what the original Scream accomplished and fails miserably. It lacks some of the suspense though it has its moments. I wouldn't even call this a horror film. More like suspense with a little comedy sprinkled in there. I'm disgusted by what they've done to the Scream franchise.
Peacemaker (2022)
Pacemaker
I was skeptical about the show even though I liked his character in The Suicide Squad. The show takes place after what happened between him and Bloodsport. The show itself is full of comedy and action. The 3 episodes I watched were definitely a 10/10. The writing is on point and the chemistry between the cast members is what really holds the show together. I always viewed John Cena as the guy that was brought in because they couldn't afford Dwayne Johnson. But that was laid to rest after viewing Peacemaker. John Cena is a true star and I wouldn't be surprised if he ever gets nominated for an Oscar or Emmy award and win. The people that gave this anything less than a 7 honestly doesn't know a good show if they were to se see it. Please Peacemaker a chance because you won't regret it.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Resurrections of the Matrix...But why???
The Matrix franchise is over. I really can't wrap my head around this film. Lazy writing, OK special effects, and weak characters. My wife fell asleep halfway through and I found myself constantly yawning. This is a movie that should've been made 10 years ago. The new young "Morpheus" is a joke. I would've preferred a CGi version of Mr. Fishburne instead. Either you're going to love or hate the new Matrix. I choose the latter for various reasons. Heck I think it would've made a better video game than movie. Now I highly suggest you lower your expectations before watching it because you will be disappointed if you're looking for a 10/10 Matrix film....highly disappointed...you can tell it was made during the pandemic.
MacGruber (2021)
Will Forte bares all in a laugh out loud comedy
The comedy is over the top and the action is pretty wild. My wife and I laughed so hard at various scenes because a lot of it is just plain silly. I went into this with low expectations because of the film that was released in 2010 which was a box office bomb and disaster. The action is bigger and several of the jokes hit right on the spot. Now, I don't see a parents guide up yet but prepared to see some things you may not want to see.
Halloween Kills (2021)
Halloween Skills. Michael and Jamie are in tune with each other
One of the best horror films of the last 10 years. The writing falls flat sometimes but who watches a horror movie because of the excellent writing? If you are looking for jump scares and some off the wall violence, then Halloween kills is your type of movie. I was flabbergasted when I saw how much the film was being negatively critiqued by critics and audience members alike. I will say that Halloween fans will love the movie. Now, Jamie Lee Curtis showed us why she's actress. She puts on the performance of a lifetime. I highly recommend this movie if you love horror movies with a good plot.
Demonic (2021)
Demon
I can't believe people are trashing this movie. It was great and unique in my opinion. The atmosphere and tension was thick. Sometimes you didn't know what was coming. A 4.4 is harsh and that may turn off a lot of people. However don't let the low user score dissuade you from watching it. You have to be the judge.
Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
Space Jam(es)
A great family film filled with comedy and even tugs at the heart strings on occasion. I will say this, the film doesn't hold up to the first one. Why? Because A New Legacy goes a step above the original Space Jam. The updated animations and fresh music set it apart from the Michael Jordan version. Lebron is a marketing genius and deserves any praise thrown his way. We all knew this film was coming. My family loved it, especially my son who loves Lebron and the Lakers. Ryan Coogler did a great job with the screenplay though I questioned why some of the lines weren't written out or replaced. People will be hard on this film because not everybody is fond of Lebron James. Don't be surprised if they make a space James 3.
F9 (2021)
F9: Please keep making these films
This could possibly be movie of the year. Boy what a treat. It's full of action and some of the one liners are some of the best I've ever heard. The whole movie theater was laughing so hard. Tyrese really held it down. If you're looking for a sophisticated film, this isn't it. It's for action junkies and those of us who don't care how unrealistic the film can be most of the time. Vin and John Cena are awesome. I'm utterly shocked Vin hasn't won an academy award for his acting. He puts a lot of effort into his roles and after Paul Walker passed away he really stepped his game up. We still have a long ways to go this year so movie of the year may have been a bit of a stretch however after you lay your eyes on this beautiful film you will probably start thinking movie of the year. I'm glad the Rock isn't in it. He really ruined the chemistry with the cast. Maybe he'll be in the last 2 but I definitely won't hold my breath. Anyways, please check out F9 before it leaves the movie theater because unless you have an 80 inch at the house, you will not enjoy it as much.
Cruella (2021)
101 Cruellas
What a treat! This is definitely one of the best films of 2021. Emma Stone puts on her best performance yet. I guess actors and actresses just get better with age. I don't think anyone would've been able to pull off what she has done. Lindsay Lohan maybe....but that's a stretch. The biggest strengths of the movie are the writing and acting. Everyone fits their roles perfectly. My only issue with the film is the ending. I won't say anymore because I don't want ruin for anyone. Then again, some will be ok with how the film ended. I highly recommend you watch this film because you will not regret it. Let's hope Disney continues to release gems like this.
Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021)
Bloated but surprisingly good....sometimes
I wouldn't recommend this. It's overly long and surprisingly boring. Admittedly this is far superior than the Justice League that was released a few years back. I did enjoy this much more than the Avengers but it left me wanting more. The positive reviews hyped the film up like it was a masterpiece...or the second coming of Jesus. Well, it's neither of those but I expect people to treat it as such as more people watch it. If this was the film that was released a few years ago, Avengers would've had stiff competition but Warner Bros consistently drops the ball. Maybe if they let their directors actually direct, we can get higher quality DC films. Now, if you watched the first Justice League and was left disappointed, this will erase any doubt you may have had in your head about DC. Why the one star? The hype ruined it for me as it did with Joker. I also wanted more for less. It's 4 hours long and my attention span for most movies is 1 hr and 20 mins. Rarely do I finish a movie in one sitting but I did. The film will sometimes grab a hold of you and not let go but when it does let go you don't even notice it so you continue to watch it. I recommend you watch this with family and friends.
Kenan (2021)
Kenan & No Kel
One of the funniest new shows on TV. Don Johnson steals the show with a side splitting performance as the Father-in-Law. Kenan Thompson holds it down by bringing fresh comedy to the table. I was hesitant about the show but after reading several reviews, I had to watch it. The negative reviews do the show no justice but you shouldn't listen to all of them. If the show is cancelled after one season, I'd be in total shock. Watch this over The Young Rock if you're looking for a true comedy. I highly recommend you watch this with your family and friends because they will be talking about the show for days and wanting more Kenan and Don Johnson.
Young Rock (2021)
Between The Rock and a hard place
It was only a matter of time before Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson made a show about himself. Heck, he plays the same role in all of his movies with the same facial expressions. As for the show, I went in with a open mind and of course I was disappointed. The show isn't funny. It had its moments but this show should've not been made. Great idea on paper I'm sure, but the execution was poor. I'd be surprised if the show lasts for more than a couple of seasons. I will not give up on the show just yet but it has left a bad taste in my mouth.
Walker (2021)
Austin, Texas Ranger Walker
How can someone watch this and not be interested? Move over Chuck Norris there is a new ranger in town and he kicks butt. I was very skeptical because I'm not a fan of reboots but this takes it a step above what Chuck brought to the table. The writing and acting is why I love television. Jared Padalecki was the right choice for the role. I think we will forget about Chuck when it's all over with. I can't wait for future episodes. I have the episode dates marked on my calendar so I don't miss this Walker. I have several friends who liked it as well. Give it a chance.
WandaVision (2021)
Meh
Not what I was expecting. I patiently waited for this to release and I must admit that I am disappointed. Episode one was great but episode two was a miss. I will not give up on the show after two episodes but I'm hoping episode 3 stands out. I love Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany so I hope the show does get better. The show is unique and weird but it's missing something. Something that will make it stand out from the rest of the tv shows out there. It has a lot of promise and potential. I expect it to be around for awhile if they can keep it interesting and not lose sight. I highly recommend you wait until all episodes are available because the first few may turn you off. Similar to The Mandalorian.
Pieces of a Woman (2020)
Woman in Pieces
This film is a must watch. The emotions are raw and realistic. The acting is superb. The beginning of the film will leave you breathless. Once the film grabs a hold of you, it won't let go. I read some of the negative reviews and I get it. This is not a film for everyone but everyone should watch it at least one time. My wife and I were crying like babies because the energy of the film was so intense. Shia LaBeouf put on a tour de force. Due to the controversy surrounding his personal life, I highly doubt he receives any awards for his performance. I also believe he was playing himself. No acting was done on his part. He seemed to comfortable in his role. And that's such a shame because I was rooting for Shia personally. I can't forget about Vanessa Kirby. She will definitely win several awards. Please watch this with your spouse or lover. You will be talking about this film for years to come.
Shadow in the Cloud (2020)
Brilliant performance from Chloe Grace Moretz
What an excellent way to end 2020 and begin 2021. This is one of the best movies of the year. It is an action/horror film that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Chloe Grace Moretz steals the show with her superb acting. Without her the movie wouldn't have been as good in my opinion. There are moments when it feels like the film comes to complete stop but it eventually picks back up with in your face action. I almost passed the movie up due to the low user review score but I'm glad I gave it a chance. My only gripe is the length of the film. You can find tv episodes that are equally the same length as this film. I definitely recommend this film if you get the opportunity to watch it.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Overhyped and full of cliches
I've heard nothing but great things about The Queens Gambit so I decided to give the limited series a chance. What a waste of time. It starts off with a head full of steam and then it falls flat. After the first episode, the show just wasn't good anymore. I'm trying to figure out why the show is rated so high. Maybe because it's overhyped? Probably...Now, I will praise the acting but that's it. The show is sllllooowwwww at times. Some scenes just drag on and on with no end in sight. That's one of my biggest issues. Please don't feed into the hype. The first episode will hold your attention and you'll want to come back for more. However after that first episode you'll find yourself yawning more than usual. You may even fall asleep (My wife). The show is not 10 or a 9. Heck, not even an 5. It's a 1/10.
Death to 2020 (2020)
I tried.
I'm not sure where to begin..wow what a waste of time. If you thought 2020 was bad, just wait until you lay your eyes on this dumpster fire. I chuckled a few times but I just wanted it to end. Please do not waste your time watching this. Unless you've been in a coma from Jan 2020 to Dec 2020, I highly suggest you focus on 2021 and leave mess in the past.
Reversion (2020)
A late 2020 hidden gem
After watching the preview for Reversion, it was only right that I'd check the film out. The plot is rather simple: a guy is accused of killing the president. It starts off slow but picks up steam 20 minutes into the film. I'll be honest, I've never heard of any of the actors in the film. However I will say this, each person played their roles exceptionally well. I have no doubt in my mind that these individuals will find work in Hollywood moving forward. The action is great. The cinematography is beautiful. The writing could use some work but when you're working on a shoestring budget don't expect to get Charlie Kaufman as a writer. I highly recommend this film. I'm a fan of film that get looked over sometimes but this film should be on everyone's radar going into 2021. Lastly, Isaac Stephen puts on a tour de force. Exceptional is all I will say. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch this movie but if you have absolutely nothing to do one day, I would advise you check this out.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Un-Wonder Woman
This has to be one of the worst movies of 2020. I waited patiently for this film to release and I was dismayed by what I saw. The action is dull, the acting is wooden and dialogue sounds like it was written by a first time writer. If you love cliches this is your movie. It's filled with them and you just have to roll your eyes. Superman v. Batman is far more superior than this film. Director Patty Jenkins really dropped the ball. The first film was so much better. What blows my mind is that the movie was directed by the same person who directed the first one. I think it was the right decision to split the release between digital and theatrical because it was not going to make its profit back just by doing a theatrical release, let alone on demand. I don't recommend this movie. I'd advise you wait until it's free on tv in about a year. It's that bad. It pains me to be so critical of Wonder Woman because I'm a huge fan. However, I'm not a fan of a director who can't even make a decent sequel. This is the same director who is going to direct Star Wars Rouge Squadron in 2023. If you love Gal Gadot check this movie out, other then that this is a hard pass.
The New Mutants (2020)
One of the scariest movies of our generation
Never in a million years would I have thought the horror genre and superhero genre would combine. Yet, here we are a film that breaks barriers. From beginning to end I was on the edge of my seat. The movie definitely has the atmosphere and the acting is some of the best this year. I'll be honest, I've never heard of a majority of the stars that play in the film. That changed after watching The New Mutants. I expect most of the individuals who starred in this film to find work easily in Hollywood. Action and horror, what more can a Marvel fan ask for? People will write this movie off because it's a spin-off but don't let that be a deciding factor. I read some of the negative reviews and just shook my head. 2020 has been a bad year for several people but the movie industry has been releasing nothing but quality and Oscar worthy films lately. The New Mutants are a perfect example. I can't wait to see what 2021 has in store for us.
Wild Mountain Thyme (2020)
Bravo Jon Hamm! Oscar nomination worthy acting
I just finished watching this on Amazon prime and wow. This is definitely one of the best movies of the year. Jon Hamm steals the show as he did in Mad Men. The plot is a little weak but the acting and emotions are top tier. The film will make you laugh and cry. I got choked up a few times because it can be emotionally draining but satisfying. I watched it with my wife and I had to leave the room just to wipe the tears so she wouldn't see me cry. She wasn't a fan of the film because of the accents and pacing. If you're looking for a film that's going to tug your heartstrings and take you on an emotional rollercoaster, this is your film. Please don't let the negative reviews change your mind about watching this beautiful film.
