No Hard Feelings (2023)
The cat sat on a mat :)
'The most beautiful poetry can be about simple things, like a cat, or a flower, or rain.' - Mr. Keating's thoughts from Dead Poets Society (1989) are spot on. A movie (especially a comedy) does not have to be deep and philosophical either to be able to highlight a few simple truths of life, like forgiveness, independence or responsibility.
Jennifer Lawrence is wonderful as always, this role is child's play (no pun intended) for her, Matthew Broderick is the other one who does his (not too complicated) job masterfully, the others are forgettable, but they didn't face a serious challenge either.
Maybe I'm getting a little sentimental with age, but I miss movies like this. Obviously, this won't be the funniest movie you've ever seen, but it has its points: it has a simple but warm story and lovable characters. Pleasant relaxation for a cozy winter evening.
Vortex (2022)
Perfect - if you are able to forgive the 4 minor glitches
Fascinating series. There's nothing more to say. Perfect storyline, plot, dramaturgy, acting and technical execution. (Yes, I saw the green screen flaw at the beach, and even with that it's perfect.) Emphasizes well the important things in life, like the consequenses of our acts, the importance of human relations, etc. Exciting and touching at once. Brilliant.
Now about the minor glitches.
(1) Yeah, I know, how can VR glasses jump in time. Just a simple conversation could fix this:
Ludo: How can this happen?
Agathe: You know, since they make even watches with quantum computers for years, noone knows for sure what's happening really inside these gadgets. My generation even considers smartphones a miracle....
Or something similar. :)
--- Warning! Spoiler below! ---
(2) Why the hell Mel had to escape, and to go to prison for so long years if the shot could be easily set up (and even morally acceptable) as self-defense? If she wanted to pay the price for the murder as a penitence, then Ludo should not have to give her up. It remains a real question, and contradiction, some explanation is really missing from someone.
Too bad.
(3) Agathe was a really strong and amazingly misterious character, she gave me the chills. I really missed some secret phone call from her at the end to some guy (who's face can not be seen), like this:
- It happened again.
:)
(4) Some change in the past produces much more differences in the future, but okay, to keep the story going and understandable, the moderate change of events were a must. Not to mention that huge changes would have skyrocketed the production cost, so this one is absolutely forgivable of all.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Pathetic
I wanted to write a detailed review of TLJ, but to be honest everything has already been written by other reviewers. Just in short titles again:
- pointless story
- painful logical stupidity
- a complete mess
- zero dramaturgy
- poor humor
- kills the SW feeling
- etc. Etc.
I honestly believe that this movie is not a parody nor a satire, but a desecration of the entire saga. I seriously begin to think that this step was planned well in advance. It seems like Disney is testing the stupidity of the crowd. Or worse: they would like to destroy the SW universe. I don't see why, all universes they manage (eg. Marvel and SW) has it's own space, they do not interfere with each other. But simply I can't find any other logical explanation of this disaster. So, if you don't want to be disappointed because of how your dreams gonna fall apart, just go home, watch the original trilogy and forget future SW episodes for good.
I gave 2 stars only for two reasons:
- no lame CGI characters (eg. Tarkin and Leia)
- really exceptional and perfect technical implementation and visuals.
*** FICTION *** Somebody mentioned that Leia could be the one who sacrifies herself for the rebellion, and that would be a respectful tribute for Carrie Fisher. I absolutely agree. On top of that, if Luke was the other one who dies because feeling his sister's death and of tiredness of the battle, then they could reunite in the force and show up in the final scene for Rey and Finn....
This way, 'The last Jedi' could be Leia and Luke, and Rey and Finn at once, leaving soooo much possibility and the force and the magic of SW for the next episodes....
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
What's the point??
It's so boring I would fall asleep two or three times if the music was not too loud. Sound mixing is a disaster. The only reason I did not leave the theater was that the story always had something above the threshold minimum to stay. Too many pointless scenes. Even pointless violence. And for God's sake, what's the point of the ending?? Is this all from the sequel of a masterpiece: to die for the good purpose? Really? It's so weak that it hurts. The only positive thing about the movie that it tries very hard to respect the first one, that's why I gave two stars. But it's way too superficial.
Ps.: For the professionals: It's time to learn to create an atmosphere without so much color grading! At least look at the original....
