The Revenant (2015)
It is not an usual Inarritu movie.
In most of his movies Alejandro G Innaritu has emphasized on human behavior, relationship, conflicts between various characters and he represented his movies in a non linear, hyperlink format. Amores Perros, 21 grams and Babel are the three most prominent examples of his cinematic style. He always has liked to reveal the whole story with flashbacks, flashforwards and plot twists. But 'The Revenant' is an exception of his usual format. Here he created situations in absolute wilderness. It is a story of 'Struggle for existence' and survival with inner current of vengeance, love and human values. He depicted the survival strategies in one of the most hostile and extreme environments with impeccable detailing, that is what makes the film a great creation. Leonardo DiCaprio has done the best performance of his life. a must watch.
Nayak (1966)
A magnificent screenplay rather World class.
This movie gonna remind you Ray's skill in screenplay writing. One of my favorite screenplays is '12 Angry Men' by Reginald Rose and this one is the second best(obviously in my opinion). The movie is PERFECT and compact in all aspects. Direction is absolutely flawless. In most of his movies Ray chose Soumitra Chatterjee in the lead role but in this movie he preferred Arun Kumar Chatterjee(a.k.a Uttamkumar). There is no doubt that he made a correct decision. Uttamkumar's acting in the role of 'NAYAK' is fantabulous. This movie is about the ups and downs in the life of a successful film star. He revealed his story to a journalist(Sharmila Tagore) when he was boarded on a train. Alongside Ray created other characters which were also very significant and lie in perfect harmony with the main course. He pictured every character with some unique qualities, and sometimes made a mockery of the modern lifestyle and intellectualism of upper middle class. The character of Aditi(Sharmila Tagore) is very soothing. She never compromised on her righteousness. And that's why she tore off the paper of interview at last because it was never gonna give her any satisfaction. A masterpiece. A world classic.
Devi (1960)
A simple story with a reflection of social malpractices.
Satyajit Ray is remembered for his profound humanitarian look in his motion pictures. Devi is another example of his masterful direction and screenplay. In old days Indian social system was full of superstitions and various religious malpractices. The cast system, sati, child marriage, illiteracy and torture in the name of god darkened the sky of India. Women were the worst victims. Parda was maintained and none of them were allowed to go to school. The idea of humanitarianism was shadowed by the falsehood of spiritualism made by the priests for their own interest. Bengal was not an exception. this is the social background of the movie. Dayamoyee was married to Umarasad, son of Kalikinkar Roy. Kalikinkar was a zamindaar also an orthodox worshiper of Goddess Kali. He liked his daughter in law very much and often called her Maa(mother). The story took interesting turn when one day Kalikinkar dreamed that Doyamoyee is the incarnation of Goddess Kali. In ancient social system these dreams were treated with utmost religious importance. Everybody believed him and started to worship her. News was spread about her holiness and supernatural power. And gradually she lost all of her social relations. Umaprasad returned and tried to save her but failed. Eventually when a child in the family became ill instead of proper treatment family members took the child to Doyamoyee in this misbelieve that she might save the child by her divine power. But the next day the child died. Mother of the child blamed Doyamoyee for her loss. Atlast Doyamoyee became psychotic and lost her life. A simple story which described the dangerous and futile perspective of religious fanaticism. Today Hinduism is one of the modern religions with the principle of tolerance. But we can not ignore the past and many people in all over India suffered a lot because of religion. Satyajit described it properly. A very significant parallel cinema. must watch.
PK (2014)
A film everybody needs to watch.
I have got no doubt that this movie may not be the best Bollywood movie but it delivers a very true and important message which is very much relevant to the culture of India and her secularism(I am feeling proud). We are the most developed species of the world and we made religion to protect ourselves from wrongdoings and to lead every human being into the righteous path of life. But now a days we are concentrating more to protect religion. Surely if God created this whole universe then He has got enough power to protect himself. We don't need to quarrel or don't need to bomb people in the name of God. Instead if we help each other to solve problems and sufferings, we surely can create a better world for us and for coming generations. There is no sign in a newborn baby which can surely indicate he/she is a Hindu,Muslim or Christian. First we are all human beings then we shall think about religion. Rajkumar Hirani is one of the best directors and he delivered the message in a very unique artistic way that every Indian will love to watch this. Songs are good,Amir Khan was equally good in the character of PK, Anushka looked sexy and bubbly. I just liked her smile and energy. All over the movie was more than satisfactory. A must watch.
Alive Inside (2014)
music is the greatest creation of human.
I am deeply moved by this documentary. It is really very fascinating to watch how the Alzheimer patients who don't even remember their names responded to music, particularly the music they loved in their early days. The scientific reasons behind this is also described properly. Aging is an inevitable phenomenon of life. It is us who should decide how we take care of aged population. In India the way is far more different than USA. Here usually old people, who are suffering from dementia are not sent to a nursing home. Home care is given and they remain in the family. But after watching this documentary I have realized the picture is quite different in America.Parting a old human from his/her familiar world is gonna worsen their disease(but there may be some obligatory factors in the family I am overlooking those). If music therapy seems to help them then it should be started on a large scale. Dan Cohen is doing a great job by helping these people(not patient) and government should help him to achieve his goal. A must watch.
Dances with Wolves (1990)
A revolutionary Motion Picture.
What a movie. I have no word to describe how much I've enjoyed this movie. It is one of the best creations I have ever experienced. And Kevin Costner,he acted fantastically. He made this movie with unparalleled skill of direction. The Sioux people, their lifestyle, dialect, and culture has been depicted and detailed in a very artistic way. The background music was excellent. A 10 out of 10. I think the relation between Lt.John J Dunbar and Sioux people was the most interesting and significant part of the story. It happened in a very naturalistic and realistic way that it will easily win anybody's heart. I loved the first kissing scene of Dunbar and Stands With a Fist. It was very emotional. Surely a revolutionary motion picture.
Planet Earth (2006)
Earth as you've never seen it before.
A magnificent documentary about Earth, its landscapes and large biodiversity of this very planet which is gonna make you think how little we all know about this planet. The documentary is enriched with flawless narration, extraordinary photography, and breath taking descriptions of some strangest places of our planet( i found 'caves' the most interesting). You can clearly understand 'struggle for existence' has never stopped, now a days the struggle is more intense because there are so many threats(global worming, deforestation etc). Food chain is an important thing in ecosystem. There are various food chains present in different parts of earth. It depends upon various factors like sunlight, food etc. In the 'Planet Earth' almost all possible food chains are described with equal and proper information. In 11 episodes they detailed almost every part of the Earth from North pole to South pole. Watch it and feel the heartbeats of Earth. This documentary is worthy of its punch line 'AS YOU'VE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE'.
Gravity (2013)
A film affected by Kessler Syndrome.
'GRAVITY', its the most wonderful 3D experience of my life. I have seen a number of movies about spaceships, alien worlds etc but none of those detailed the picture of space like this one. Camera movements, light and sound were just fantastic. Sandra bullock and George Clooney, their expressions were perfect. I bet audience have also enjoyed their conversations. After watching this movie I have felt how lucky i am to be a part of this wonderful world. The direction of Alfonso Cuaron is just hilarious. It was so good that even I felt the helplessness of Dr.Ryan Stone right from my seat in the cinema hall. The scenes of collisions and explosions were equally bizarre because there were no sound(and that is normal in the space). The visual effects, extraordinary 3D effects and the thrill which have been maintained throughout the whole movie will definitely make it one of the finest creations of Hollywood.
