Don't prejudge this teen horror
4 March 2023
I don't understand the amount of super low rated reviews. Most of the low reviews I've seen pre-judged the show and gave 1 star because it wasn't what they were expecting (I also noticed that many of them were written after the reviewer had only seen the premiere episode, which imo really does not give the show a fair chance). This is a teen show for sure. For people coming just for SMG, it is not the new Buffy, but that doesn't mean it's bad. The horror is on par with a lot of other teen shows that deal with supernatural/horror element, but it's definitely at a 13PG/14A level. I think the show has a lot of room to grow, which is a good thing. My only qualm is a want more SMG, but now that we're deeper in the season I think her role is definitely starting to expand.

Minor SPOILERS for Buffy fans: SMG's role in this show very much gives me the experience of a what-if scenario where an alternative dimension Buffy joined The Initiative for good and is using the arson detective role as an undercover tactic, cause there is 100% more to her character than we currently know at the ep. 6 mark.

Overall I'm interesting to see how the show /story evolves.

Visual and terrible
3 January 2023
There's no nice way of saying I really hated this movie, but I did. The longer I watched it more I hated it. There were often strong visuals but overall the film felt vapid and empty, often bordering on pointless. Though it was only 95mins it felt much longer, I almost turned it off several times. It's really unfortunate that even with the cast it has the film kind of just limps along. Overall the script could of gone for an edit or rewrite, but I question why it was written at all (for a good portion of the film it doesn't much feel like there is a script because of how much it meanders and drags). The films perspective is also rather muddled and since so much is shot in close ups it makes it hard to connect with the characters. It kind of felt like Gosling watched a lot of David Lynch and Harmony Korine then decided to make a movie, but what resulted was a shadow of an idea not nearly as smart as it wanted to be covered up with lots of colourful lights.

Dreamland

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know if I've ever seen a production with such a happy ending that made me feel so sad. There are so many tragic figures of Hollywood who's stories were represented but rewritten in the mini-series, and it makes the entire show really bittersweet. Knowing the lived truth of Anna May Wong, and Rock Hudson for example - knowing that neither had the lives represented in the series, it was actually quite depressing. The series is very much a wish fulfillment for anyone who has ever wanted to reach back into history and right certain wrongs made by the Hollywood system. My biggest problem with the series is that it simply isn't true, and that is what makes it so sad to watch. However that's also the point of the series in a large way (much like the rewriting of Peg to Meg in the series itself) it is a fantasy, it is Dreamland, and dreams don't have to bare on reality.

Many of the characters shown in the series were either not real (but used to represent the idea of many people) or amalgamations of certain stars/people. Those who are real figures of history basically all have their stories rewritten in one way or another so that they fit into a fantastical world where dreams can and do come true - framed within a film that never existed, that changes the very tragic story of a woman who did. There is a level of hypocrisy because of this, as it misrepresents so much. At the same time the series casts a light on certain stars and Hollywood figures that often only those of us who have studied film would know now, and that helps to keep their stars shining for a new generation. Despite any flaws of the series the idea behind it is one many people can connect to, but it is bittersweet nonetheless.
