De slag om de Schelde (2020)
It lacks the elements it needs to be a proper good movie
*spoilers included*
Visually, great movie. Grading is very cool, love the style. Many of the sets are very impressive too. Acting, half decent at best. But there are two things that really annoy me.
The story is too simple, There is an attack coming, the resistance made sacrifices and gets the plans to the allies. There is no proper build up, and you see like 20 guys attacking. In the end you read thousands of people died.
Character development is almost none, before getting to know anyone, they die. There is a Dutch Nazi soldier who just sees a lot of bad stuff happening, barely does anything, and then his death is the most dramatic thing ever. The doctor and German officer are great buddies, still the doctor basically gets backstabbed over his son. How are the relationships? It's just tiny pieces of stories from a large group of people. It doesn't tell a story like this.
Then the second part are the mistakes. Huge cannons shooting without any recoil - same for guns. People falling from being shot and later crawling on. But the worst: seeing an automatic machinegun being fed blanks. Yeah, if that's accurate I understand the Germans lost the war.
There are many dramatic scenes, dramatic deaths and dramatic music... but it's all about actors we barely knew or had sympathy for. There are just too many scenes that feel unnatural and unrealistic.
Huge potential, but it just lacks.
The Dress Up Gang (2019)
Bizar, sharp, surrealistic, beautifully simple and a bit complex.
This show is extremely refreshing. Small stories about amazing issues the gang tries to resolve. A dynamic between characters of love and hate. Straight up weirdness, but on the other hand making metaphors of real life situation, to ridicule them.
Perhaps this is not a show to watch sober, but man, is this a trip on it's own. Music is awesome too by the way.
Rate higher folks, this show earns at least an 8!
Code 404 (2020)
Instant one of my favorites
The balance between comedy, bit of action and the story is really nice. The story itself is allright, decent and not too complex like the Matrix. But that's perfect. The comedy is really nice. Sharp and often surprising. Really liking it so far, watched 1-5 so far.
Most people who seem to dislike it know the actors from different roles and were expecting something else based on that. Watch with an open mind.
Formula 1: Drive to Survive (2019)
This is not what F1 is about
As a big big F1 and movie/series fan, I truly had high hopes. However, especially if you're new to F1, watching this docu will give you totally wrong expectations of 2019's F1 season. Here's why.
It's overly overly overly dramatized. King of Spain? Fighting for the 7th place? They present it like it was a world-title decider. And that is just one of the many examples. The editing is done in such a way that everything looks way more intense. Both on and off-track. The added sound effects are horrible. This will make F1 look dull when you see it on live tv. It's like F1 had a weird child with JJ Abrams in Hollywood and this was the result.
The episode about RBR and Renault is a great example on how they show the facts in a suggestive way. They first claim Ricciardo HAS to win, show his overtakes, and show the RBR's Renault engine blow up. Then a shot of the yellow and black Renault is shown while the presenter says that is the only remainder Renault to finish the race. Yeah, Renault team car. In the meanwhile Verstappen won that race using a Renault engine.
What about technical innovation? "This movie is all about the PEOPLE", yeah well F1 isn't. And drive to survive? Excuse me? Is this a racing-Battle Royale? No it isn't. They're driving to win. Ask any driver why they drive, and it's winning.
The show is also riddled with mistakes. For example, when they show the Hungarian Grand Prix, and Ricciardo's side of it, they show at least 3 shots from the Belgian Grand Prix (Hungary doesn't have these hills, pine trees and there are no yellow-red kerbs). Also, they show the wrong car. Any F1 fan will spot this, and yet this edit came through all checks and landed on Netflix.
It feels this series is created by movie-makers who just want to show emotion and drama. Surely F1 has that, but you don't have to overdo it.
Lethal Weapon (2016)
Surprised in a very positive way
We've seen some really good series in the past like this, and I was really looking forward to something new. So far the plot is fine, lot's of perspectives to keep it interesting for a (long) while. And, there seems to have happened a lot in the past to dig back to.
The acting is very convincing and even felt like it was natural for them. That's very important, because the two main characters are like fire and ice. And seeing that with two convincing personalities is just great to watch.
The action is nice, which is important. But it's not too much, and also not too little. It's exactly fine.
Humor is really my kind of humor. Lot's of small funny remarks and some nicely unexpected things.
So far, a really good start of the show. Positively surprised.
La haine (1995)
The Hate...
First off, I haven't seen many French movies, but the ones I saw were excellent (Amelie for example). I saw this title and the back really got my attention.
So after seeing the movie what did I thought? OK it's completely black and white... excellent! I use BW myself a lot (in photo's and movies) and I love it. The filters used are just awesome. The camera positions are very good too (in the toilet is very well done).
What I like too about this movie is that it contains some very unexpected twists... Also the actors act very good. The end is a bit unexpected too. I wont spoil anything about it though.
Although this is quite a dramatic movie, there's also some humor in it. The humor included is actually pretty funny. Said for example tells some jokes. But also 2 French guys who have nothing to do with the story are very funny (near the car, and in the toilet)
Really a MUST SEE!! French quality.
