Teen Titans Go! (2013)
I don't know what to say
To start off, I absolutely loved the 2003 series. I would rush home from school to watch this show. The characters, plot, etc., was just memorable and had appeal to anyone. My favorite was always Beast boy. I was confused when I first heard about this series, but i did like the humor in the first series, so I gave it a chance. The humor in the 2003 one was a little cheesy, but in a good way.
Sadly, I can't say the same about this show. The part about this show I did like was the original cast is back. The personalities are somewhat similar, they got that down.
The plot is just what they do on there off time from fighting crime. I watched the episode where beast boy and cyclops decided to clone themselves, and the second part was robin wanting to go on a date with starfire. I honestly can't give you an example of the jokes, because none were memorable. Mostly just cheap slapstick and being random. The visuals look like cheap cut outs, more like a flash video than an actual show. Definitely meant to target 6 year olds.
All in all, i can't recommend this show. Its supposed to be a comedy, but I got bored real fast. I wanted to change the channel, but I least watch a whole episode just to keep an open mind. Moral of the story, you're better off ignoring this series.
Regular Show (2010)
Consistently funny
Regular show is a entertaining and memorable show. Its still very entertaining, even 3 years into it.
The show doesn't have much of a plot. Just a couple of guys who work at the park. The main characters, the two who are involved in pretty much every plot, are Mordecai and Rigby. Mordecai and Rigby are slackers (mainly rigby) who like to chill, play games, and mess around. The other characters are Muscle Man, Benson, Skips, Pops, Hi Five Ghost, Margaret, Elene, and occasionally Thomas.
The plots mainly consists of anything that goes on. Than it goes horribly wrong and out of the ordinary, and than the park or something gets trashed. It doesn't sound like much, but the simplicity is one of the series strengths. I love how they can take anything, even things as simple as rock paper scissors, and make a random and funny plot out of it. There are a good amount of running gags (Muscle man's my mom jokes, oooohhhh, hmm hmm, etc.). I can see how it may annoy some, but I feel it adds to the charm.
Regular Show is one of the few cartoons worth really checking out. Some of my favorites are Party Pete, Rap Battle one, Unicorns one, and many more. The show rarely fails to amuse, and its just hilarious. If you have't already checked it out, you should.
Dredd (2012)
One of the finest comic adaptations and potential cult classic
As a fan of Judge Dredd, and I've read some graphic novels and some of the case files (comic compilations), this is definitely a great adaption. This by all means is not a sequel to the Stallone version, and that's a very good thing. The visuals, action sequences, and faithfulness to the source material makes this not only my favorite comic book movie of the year, but one of the best adaptations of all time.
The premise of the film is very simple. Set in mega city 1, the film just starts out as another day on the job. Judges are pretty much cops, and are the only thing enforcing the law. Than judge dredd has been assigned to test the new rookie judge Cassandra Anderson, who has telepathic abilities. They than find a triple homicide in peach trees on the lawmaster (motorcycle) , and discover the Ma Ma clan is the sole producer of the new drug slo mo. They go in to the place and capture Kay (Ms Ma clan member), a man partly responsible for the homicide. Than The Ma Ma clan puts the whole mega block on lock down. Than they pretty much raise hell going up 200 floors of the mega block and take down Ma Ma and her gang.
Despite a simple synopsis, that is arguably one of the films strengths. Some people say this is a rip off of the raid, but this project started much earlier in 2008 (I like both movies). One thing i liked was, as previously stated, the faithfulness to the source material. Dredd never takes his helmet, and they never try to develop him too much. He is pretty much a 1 dimensional, emotionless enforcer of the law. Cassandra is the more emotional, developed character who balances the duo. The movie is straight to the point and simple, and that is not very common in movies anymore. Another thing i liked was that mega city feels like something that is possible.
The action is intense, fast paced, and sometimes even beautiful (I'll get on why i say that). The Slo Mo sequences are visually stunning. It gives you a perspective of being on the drug, and the colors are vivid. The water looks like diamonds, and the blood flows like ribbons. Its one of the reasons to see this in 3d. The scene when the get to the middle of the mega block, when ma ma clan goes overkill on that floor and dredd dodges that machine gun is definitely a high light. The near end scene when dredd pushes ma ma off the floor in slo mo and falls to her death is also noteworthy.
The only real complaint i have is that the movie doesn't 100 percent indicate the message of Judge Dredd. There's not much indicating that the character and the strip was very much a satire. Judge Dredd was designed to be a character both loved and hated. Loved for his bad ass attitude and attire, and hated for his fascist police state mentality. It was made as a realistic future based on how society and governments are currently trending right now, particularly the United States ( where mega city is located). Its not all bad though, as mega city one is designed as something that is more likely to occur, and there are comments on how law enforcement is, somewhat relates to whats going on now a days.
Judge Dredd is a very well made action flick. The action is intense, but never overstays its welcome. The visual eye candy, 3d, and hard r violence makes this a movie that should be seen by anyone who likes action films. Arguably the best comic movie in a very long time, on par with Watchmen and The Dark Knight. Overall, a 9 out of 10.
The Amazing World of Gumball (2011)
Hardly Watchable
The Amazing World of Gumball is..... not very good. The show had some decent potential, but it turned out to be another dull show with modern kids show clichés.
The animation is the only thing really going for this show. Its very unique, and can be described as a animated scrapbook. Gumball, Darwin, and that household, along with a few others, are more of a cartoon look, while there's a realistic looking dinosaur and a cgi monkey for a teacher. It animates well, and is quite random. visually, its on par with that adventure time/regular show vibe. That was why i was intrigued to watch an episode in the first place.
The rest, however, is pretty awful. The main characters, wait, all the characters, are one dimensional and very annoying. There is no character development. I mean, not all shows are supposed to be developed, and some are more along the line of random humor. Well, that's not very good either. Most of the jokes either involve toilet humor, cheap slapstick, or randomly shouting things. Mostly the latter. In fact, that's all this show is. Spongebob had a lot of that, but it was at least clever from time to time. This show just insults the viewers intelligence. The plots are simple, but there's never anything unexpected. When the randomness comes around, it never really impacts me at all.
Overall, i am not impressed with this show. I have no idea why most cartoon creators insist that randomly shouting things is funny. If you want good random humor, stick with adventure time or regular show. This show will hopefully be forgotten. Overall, I don't recommend this to anyone.
My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic (2010)
One of the better children's shows i've seen in a while
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is entertaining, funny, and even epic from time to time.
At first, i was skeptical about the show. My 6 year old sister was watching it one day (a friend in deed), and the song about pinkie pie being everyone's friend (more on the characters later). Sarcastically, i commented "let me guess, Pinkie Pie finds someone that isn't her friend" My sister said yes, and i just laughed, though i still watched it. Despite the simplicity of the story, it was pretty funny and the songs were catchy. I watched Dragon quest, which was also good, but the episode that got me hooked was a dog and pony show.
The show is about Twilight Sparkle, an overachieving student from Canterlot, and her assistant spike ( a baby dragon) who moves to Ponyville with an assignment to learn about friendship. Within the show, she reports to princess celestia about lessons she and the rest of the main 6 learned throughout each episode. The other ponys are pinkie pie, a cheerful pony who finds joy in everything, rainbow dash, who is confident and athletic, fluttershy, a shy and kind pony who likes animals, rarity, whos elegant and fashionable, and apple jack, whos hard working and family oriented. The elements (by ponys listed) are magic, laughter, loyalty, kindness, generosity, and honesty. Also forgot to mention the cutie mark crusaders Applebloom, Sweetie Belle, and Scootaloo, 3 little filly's finding their purpose in life.
Despite such a simple premise, the show is well developed. The way the characters interact is very realistic. There are many times when each of the main 6 get in arguments and have a hard time staying true to their element. It teaches great lessons, and deals with everyday topics, such as tolerence ( Bridal Gossip), insecurities and assertiveness (putting your hoof down), taking your friends seriously (lesson zero), and many more great life lessons. The best part is, it doesn't feel like you're being lectured. There are plenty of well composed songs, witty dialogue, and funny situations.
On the technical side, The visuals are colorful, bright, and very expressive. The songs are catchy, whether fun (pinkie pies oink oink oink song) or serious (this day aria), or plain catchy (flim flam brothers song). even the background music fits the mood. The characters have so much personality, and the fact that they have flaws and try to work it out makes it wonderful. The voice acting is also noteworthy, with rarity's dramatic moments, to rainbow dashes sarcasm.
Overall, i can say i am a fan. There aren't many contemporaries that can even compare (the only one i can think of is Gravity Falls), and is a joy for all ages. The girly visuals may turn some away, but if you look past that, you will find a show that is very clever and fun. Say what you want about bronies, but they have one thing right, this is one of the best children's shows ever created.
added note: season 3 was a bit hit and miss compared to the old seasons, and i wasn't a big fan of the season 3 finale, but that doesn't make the older episodes any less good.
