Reviews
Anna's Eve (2004)
A well-acted little Psychological Horror
Budget constraints- sure. But 10 mins into this film I found myself surprisingly engaged. The story is solid and the acting is so much better than I was expecting. Those things that make you rate so many of this genre of movies at a 2 or less aren't here - the story is solid, engaging and creepy, you really do that feeling of dread very early on, the acting is good and the dialogue is natural.
OK its not an 8 but def a 6. I just think its an injustice that its showing up w/ such a low rating when its a really good little chiller!! Its entertaining from the get-go and the pay-off is there. You'll definitely enjoy this film.
The Barber (2014)
AND THATS HOW ITS DONE!
Smart protagonist and smart antagonist- thats what makes this movie so great. An unceasing game of cat & mouse keeps the tension going through the story, with some nice plot twists and really good timing on the reveals.
5.9? REEEE diculous.
This movies is far and away better than that score. I think ppl were looking for car crashes or nudity. Not w/ this one. Good dialogue, superb acting. Just a taut, smart little thriller. Worth every minute of your time.
Midnight, Texas (2017)
Midnight Cliché', Texas
I had high hopes for this show but after the first 2 episodes its a bit of a cliché'. It has only been TWO episodes so, this might all be way harsh however this is what I have seen.
- Half naked woman, men fully clothed at all times
- Cringe-worthy in their complete neglect of character development
- Why are we rushing through all this action with no sense of who these people are, where they came from, or what their philosophies are? I get that that unfolds during the course of a season but... you should at least make a START of it. As it is, the characters are barely engaging. They're all swagger and I couldn't care less about them.
- Zero chemistry love interest. She can't be forcing herself on him more, he couldn't be less interested. And I might've missed something but how did she get obsessed w/ a guy she doesn't know? Whatever is going on there (nothing) isn't real.
I'm going to lift from 2 other reviewers here:
SHOW, don't tell
- Llet down by less than engaging dialogue and character interaction that is too formulaic
So, comparisons are inevitable, and I will keep watching to see if the writing gets a little more sophisticated or starts to show some depth, however, if you want a good, character driven supernatural story your better off with Constantine, Being Human (UK or USA) or Haven.
Having said all this negative, I am intrigued with the preacher. He seems to have some acting chops and I actually really wanna know his story- maybe because he's not some cliché' we've seen before. Well, his "gifts" aren't anyway.
Last bit > it would be nice to see some, dare I say it? women in their 40's, instead of a show full of men in their 40's with a bunch of late 20's chicks running around. Just throwing that out there before the show starts to do that!!! Biggest cliché' in TV.
Mary Reilly (1996)
British Accents & Boredom
This movie is filmed so beautifully. The costumes, the mood, its lovely.
But this movie is a bore. And possibly the most cringe-worthy part of it is Julia Roberts' absolutely hideous impression of a British accent. WHY WHY WHY the director didn't stop the bleeding is beyond me. Every time she opens her mouth you're transported right back to modern times. It completely takes you out the film and the actress out of the character.
Really Hollywood, we will suspend disbelief. If the actor can't pull it off DON'T do it. I love Julia Roberts as much as everyone else but this isn't where her acting strengths lie.
Io sono l'amore (2009)
Lush
This movie is so great. I'll skip everything you've already read about the cinematography and the acting - all so well done. It really felt like a book on screen not a movie. ie much more depth than you usually get. More subtleties.
The only thing I didn't like was how they make the main character "heroic" (via the music). While she is so beautiful on the outside - she's so ugly on the inside; letting her son die to keep her selfish secret safe. She treats her husband poorly when he's done nothing but love and provide for her. Yet the movie portrays her as this bird trying to get air.... I dunno. A little more like a selfish beauty who is actually monstrous - complete with teeth and talons ripping her family apart to get what she fancies.... this year. You do get the impression she'll want something else in a few yrs and she'll rip her "new stable life" apart when she does.
That twisted morality aside... :-) this movie is worth every minute. I did not find anything distracting about the camera angles or the music. Every part of it had purpose. And a lot of the images, in my view, were symbolic.
By the Sea (2015)
Good God This Movie Was Boring!
This movie had some very touching moments. MOMENTS. And there was a subtlety to it that was really nice. A look, a small gesture. They were both able to translate that "world" in small movements.
That was the 2 stars.
Unfortunately, these moments are far too few and far between. The film never gains enough momentum to get you beyond mildly curious. In fact I was seriously annoyed by it. Just when you thought the story was about to become cohesive you got another 45 minutes of boredom. I wanted to shoot myself.
It was kind of a game in some ways - only you never got a pay-off so you just ended up being angry that you tried so hard to invest yourself in the movie.
Don't waste your time on this one. There are many more "meandering-style" movies that have a faster meter with an actual pay off that makes the meandering enjoyable. This was just painful.
From Fat to Finish Line (2015)
A Real Snore
First, I want to say my review of this documentary in no way reflects the amazing feat these ppl accomplished, and continue to accomplish!
You don't get enough background on these folks to make that emotional connection. I think that's whats at the heart of the problem w/ the execution of this film. You never learn enough about these folks to get invested in them. Its really shallow when it comes to "putting you there" and making you feel what motivates these ppl. I don't need to see weeping or anything like that but I do need the filmmakers to make some effort to weave a story both present and past that connects me to this subject.
Overall, w/out an emotional connection - you better have some action. And sadly, the way its filmed isn't exciting or novel. There are no dynamic film cuts or angles. Its very repetitive and it never builds beyond boredom.
I wanted to be inspired, which is why I picked this film, but about 2/3 of the way through, when I realized the rest was going to be exactly like what I'd already seen, I just fast-forwarded to end and saw the same cuts I'd seen the whole doc. through.
A most uninspiring "we overcame" documentary. So disappointing.
A Wish Come True (2015)
Age Adjustment
Well, first I found it entertaining. It's what you're expecting and sometimes that's kinda nice.
I found the main character easy to relate to.
My only complaint is, is it just me or were her love interests old enough to be her father???? I couldn't get passed her main romantic interest looking so much older than her. I just kept seeing this midlife crisis guy hitting on a 20-something and that skeeved me out. It was impossible to get invested in her romance so that took away from the story for me.
Other than that though, it was a cute movie for a Saturday afternoon.
