Zapatista (1999)
short summary of subject matter of Zapatista
Jan. 1 1994: The Day the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) went in effect. A few minutes after midnight in Southeastern Mexico, several thousand Indian soldiers take over half the state of Chiapas, declaring a war against global corporate power and for humanity. They call themselves the Zapatista National Liberation Army (EZLN).
Zapatista is the definitive look at the uprising in Chiapas. it is the story of the Mayan peasant uprising, armed with sticks and their word against a first world military. It is the story of a global movement that has fought 175,000 federal troops to a standstill and transformed Mexican culture and international political cultural forever.
Brenner: Charlie Paradise: The Tragic Flute (1964)
One of the Best episodes of Brenner!
This episode is so good that it could of been used as a spin off series. Charlie Paradise is such a strong character that he could of been a reoccurring character. If you like the Beat Generation of the 1950's you will love this episode. It deals with the killing of a painter that witnessed a killing and put a clue as to who the killer was in one of his paintings. This episode is my favorite one in the 15 episode set released by Timeless Media Group!
Brenner is the NYPD Blue of the late 1950's. With its real New York City locals and true to life story lines, it holds up even today. I happen to like this better than NYPD Blue. The Same problems existed then as today, Heroin, murder, rape, inner-police station politics. The Twist of this show is that Brenner and his son are both detectives for the same precinct. If you happen to find it on DVD and like cop shows or just good TV in general, pick it up, you will not be disappointed.
Lexx: I Worship His Shadow (1996)
Lexx Rules!
I Worship His Shadow is the first episode of the Lexx Series, which started out as four 90 plus minute movies on the Showtime network. Episode 1, I worship His Shadow, goes into the history of the characters that make up the series and the background of the Light Universe.
The first movie is the best out of the 4. The light universe where the story begins is pretty dark and twisted. The music is one of the best parts of the series and this episode is no exception. Any fan of the Lexx series must see where it all begins to really appreciate the series.
Dark, twisted, loud, insane and amazing I worship his shadow is all of these things.
Now re-released on DVD through Amazon.
The Red Baron (1977)
Excellent Gem of a Documentary.
I found this documentary on video tape for a dollar here in Seattle. The Red Baron is an excellent documentary about Von Richthofen and his squadron. With interviews from world war one pilots that were still alive in 1988 from all sides, this documentary is excellent. With archival footage of dogfights and all sorts of World War One aircraft. This really is an excellent documentary on the Red Baron and all the World War One fly boys. The actual footage of the dogfights and bombings are breathless. If you can find this video-pick it up. I am huge world war one and world war two historian. I am not sure what channel this documentary played on originally but the history channel needs to dig this out. Ten out of Ten.
They Got Me Covered (1943)
They don't make them like this anymore!!!
One of the funniest Bob Hope movies made without Bing Crosby, this world war two era comedy must have really helped the home front with the laughs. Hope plays a bumbling reporter who messes up many big war time scoops, must to the chagrin of his editor. The funniest scene in the whole movie is when Hope's character comes back to the States and gets yelled at by his editor. The whole scene from when he walks in the office to when he leaves is absolutely hilarious. They really do not make them like this anymore. This country is so starved for a man like Hope these days. No comedian today can even hold a candle to him. I give this film a 10 out of 10 just for Hope performance and the laughs. A dose of Bob Hope a day will keep the head shrinker away. May he rest in peace.
To the Last Man (1933)
Important western in the history of film....
The transfer of this film is horrible. It has been released by Alpha Video under the title of Law of Vengeance. THe movie starts off slow and is something of an oddity in the beginning. Law of Vengeance is the only film that I have seen that shows the actors credit on the screen when they enter the picture. For example, Randoplh Scott's character makes his entrance at 20 minutes into the picture. It is then that the screen credit "Randolph Scott as Lynn Hayden" rolls across the screen. I thought this was interesting.
About 30 minutes into this western the story starts to get good. Mostly due to Scott and the female character known as Ellen Colby. The dialogue is very good in places.
This western is of importance for a film historian. Not only was it directed by Henry Hathaway, it also stars Buster Crabbe, Barton Mclane, Jake Larue and two uncredited performances by a very young Shirley Temple and a young John Carradine. This film was important in the career of Randoplh Scott and if you are a fan of his, you definitely want to own this movie. At a price less that 5 dollars, it is surely worth it.
The Return of Daniel Boone (1941)
highly enjoyable B western
This is one of the best B westerns that I have seen. Mostly due to the performance of the twin sisters that are in love Bill's sidekick Cannonball. It is a shame that these sisters were only in this one little movie. Not much is available about them on their IMDb page which is a shame. The cute songs in this movie sung by the sisters and Cannonball are amusing and damn good. This film is not available on DVD or video to my knowledge but can be seen on Starz encore westerns channel. They don't make films like this anymore. Even B movies were enjoyable back in the golden age of Hollywood. Unlike today when a movie is a stinker, it really stinks! If you like B westerns or westerns in general and the opportunity arises to see this film, definitely take advantage of it. It is one enjoyable, entertaining hour of days gone by.
Mojave Firebrand (1944)
Gabby Hayes and Bill Elliot help a small boy become a good American in this feel good B western from 1944.
An interesting B western for Bill Elliot and Gabby Hayes. Hayes actually plays himself and in the beginning seemed to be the star of the picture. He plays an old prospector who has tried to "live by the book and make the world safe for the weak". In steps Wild Bill Elliot to help. Subplot centers around a small boy who hero worships the towns bad guy. Gabby tries to get the boy to goto school, at the school that he set up just for the boy in this small mining "town" he founded. An entertaining feel good picture with a pro-Americanism subplot that was typical of movies made during world war 2. I am a big fan of B westerns from the 30's and 40's. I throughly enjoyed this picture.
Escape by Night (1937)
rare gangster film...fun for the sake of it...
For all those interested this title is available on DVD..though it doesn't say it in the IMDb home page for the picture. It is available on the Platnium disc release called "Mobster Movies". Also included on the disc is Gangster's Boy (1938) starring Jackie Cooper, Gang Bullets (1938) starring Anne Nagel and Morgan Wallace, also The Racketeer (1930) starring Carol Lombard and RObert Armstrong. I love these cheap four or more movie disc of films of yesteryear. If you can find it and it is only a few bucks, pick it up, especially if you collect the classics of the golden era. Platnium disc is also famous for their other classic film collections. Including Westerns, classic TV, film noir, drama and comedies.
Hot Lead and Cold Feet (1978)
one memorable Walt Disney western,,,,
I seen this movie at the movie theater when I was a little girl....it is one of my first memories of being at the movies.....and I loved it....very funny with little life lessons along the way..after all these years I never forgot hot lead and cold feet...I even remember the theme song..."hot lead and cold feet..may the best man win...hot lead and cold feet..may the best man win.." dadadada....What stands out in this movie is the performance of the lead character playing both parts of the gunfighter twin and the mild mannered twin...I think that kids today need to rediscover this movie....it should be remembered as a family classic...I cannot wait to purchase this on DVD and you should to especially if you have young children....
