Citadel (2023)
An unrealistic and unoriginal spy series fumble
Just finished watching The Citadel while travelling and was not impressed at the mediocrity of this series. I was drawn in by the stellar names behind and inside the project but it's still not enough.
Script? It is infantile, with lines like: "I'm myself when I'm with you. And I'm only myself when I'm with you. Marry me".
Realistic? Impossible manoeuvres and scenes are made possible with futuristic gadgets, weapons and physic's defying feats. Example: jumping out of a helicopter onto a submarine under 60 seconds
Story? They essentially take you back and forth across 2 different time periods just to make an underwhelming plot more confusing to make it appear sophisticated. But it's just boring and unnecessarily complex. The motives for each character are thin with most of the story happening off screen and barely anything exciting on screen. There's a show behind a this show that could have been compelling.
But unfortunately it took $300m, top directors, and top actors to complete this production where they crammed decades worth of spy themes and tropes into 6 hour long episodes.
There are enjoyable moments and scenes interlaced into this film and great potential. But after 6+ hours it's clear that it wasn't realized in the final execution.
What We Do in the Shadows (2019)
The best cast in comedy TV for the decade
Forget Abbott Elementary and other award winning comedies. This underrated, under the radar and "creeeeeeeeppyyyy" comedy from the genius of Taika Waititi. Imagine a short comedy show filmed in The Office style but focused on 4 old, silly, and never serious vampires and one over serious familiar living in a dilapidated mansion in Staten Island.
The show hilariously chronicles these 5 characters - each more unique, ridiculous and Hilarious then the last. The series is vulgar, fun, and consistently funny. The casts also hosts dozens of special guests each season that help make it even more spectacular. Taika, Dave Bautista, Tilda Swinton, Beanie Feldman, Wesley Snipes and of course, Simon the Devious, aka, Nick Kroll.
Don't miss out on the funniest series of the decade.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Bad show with an even worse season finale
Wow. I was hoping the show would start to get better in the last few episodes but it absolutely did not deliver. The show was slow and boring and the cameos were the only highlights of the season.
The final episode broke the 4th wall and was all around a terrible episode. Maybe even the worst episode in the season.
It's not the main actors fault because she's amazing and I loved her in Black Orphan. The show lacked quality writing, storytelling, development and any excitement.
I'm not sure where Marvel is taking their TV MCU but I really do not enjoy any of their content lately. Hoping that there is some type of reboot soon.
Nope (2022)
Better then most movies today
A lot of reviewers and people didn't like NOPE because it didn't fit the perfect model of how most modern movies are being made. Everyone wants 120 minutes of basic storytelling, A-list teamups, and non stop explosive action.
While Nope does suffer from being a bit too long and focusing a bit too much on unnecessary character dev, it does an amazing job of feeling you in and even genuinely freighting you here and there.
Most films today are almost predictable. So it was refreshing to see how Nope ended. If you have a big imagination, interest in the extraordinary then you may find this film hits your sci-fi sweet spot.
Love Island USA (2019)
Not bad but not comparable to UK or AU
The show has definitely improved since being taken over by Peacock and casting Sarah Hyland. They did a great job aligning the shows production to be more like the UK series
But the problem is the people they select seem to be exceptionally stupid. But shows like this attract stupid people mostly.
However for the UK and Australia, it's far more entertaining. Perhaps it's because they have fancy accents and use the Queens English, but it's a lot more enjoyable to listen to. The US version says "like" around 100 times a minute.
It took a while to connect to the characters and the season but half way through you start to really enjoy.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
You don't like it because it's Korean
This was a fantastic show. And like other great stories before it. It borrowed from great movies and shows that came before.
But the main issue with this series is that it's the first time watching SK content for most people.
I've been watching content from SK for years and got used to the style of overacting. Or seeing American/English speaking characters played by abismal actors.
People aren't used to this type of cinema. It's to strange and foreign so for most people they can't get over the experience. But they are making some of the best video content in the world.
Great show. Not perfect. But make a dramatic impact and was definitely memorable.
Atlanta (2016)
Season 4 made me hate this show
Seasons 1 and 2 were funny, original and interesting. Season 3 started seeing the show move in a different direction but still held up the core of what made the show great. Season 4 seems like an entirely different show with no point or purpose. Great cast, great potential, great disappointment.
The King's Man (2021)
Manners Maketh the Movie
A fun ride with entertaining twists and a heartbreaking origin story for a great trilogy of films.
An unbelievable cast come together to tell a fun story story woven together with a few climatic moments that make you feel good.
Better then the second film but not as good as the first. But it's still a good fun film that is definitely worth your time.
Firefly (2002)
A good show but hyped up due to cancellation.
Imagine if Lost was cancelled after only one season...well that is what happened with this show. It has a great cast an interesting storyline and had a unique twist at the time it aired.
However, as a super sci-fi fan, I don't know why it has this tremendous hype and following. Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, and all the Star Gate series are far better but don't get any love or attention.
Firefly is like the modern day Cowboy Bebop live-action on Netflix.
The Big Lebowski (1998)
Watched for first time in 2022...
So I finally watched this film a few weeks ago (in 2022) and this film was not at all funny. I smoke marijuana regularly and enjoy some stoner films, but damn this was just boring. I also like bowling and I'm Jewish so I really thought it would resonate. But maybe too much time has passed and that style of comedy is no longer humorous unless it's pressing your nostalgia buttons. Glad I watched after many years but I didn't miss anything.
The Expanse (2015)
A true master piece of science fiction writing, perfectly made for tv
If you are only learning about this series now then I am jealous that you are about to experience one of the great tv series of the last decade. Regardless if you are not into the original books, or the sci fi genre, The Expanse, will take you on a realistic journey into the future of mankind.
You will notice the quality of the entire show, from actors and sets to writing and CGI have all dramatically been improved from season to season which makes watching this incredible destroy unfold even more spectacular.
It focuses on a wide range of interesting stories, both realistic and fantastic but always has a deeper meaning and beautiful symbolism that makes it special. The physics and science is authentic and the 6 seasons are easy to watch.
Hope you're ready to enjoy.
Station Eleven (2021)
Ignore any user rating under 7. This show is profoundly interesting.
Episode 1 is supposed to hook you on! Once you get to episode 3, 5 and beyond you will see what makes this show special.
It's not about giving the audience a typical tv formula that they expect from a pandemic-focused, science fiction series. But there is smart writing, exciting episodes, unexpected twists and powerful acting.
It's not full of action or comedy, and it does not always make sense. But with every episode you see the bigger picture and enjoy it more and more. It's stunning mystery worth watching if your patient and posses imagination.
Lost in Space (2018)
Big budget series that is wildly entertaining
Don't let's the low ratings fool you. Some people forget that this is about a family. It's not a modern sci fi show where family values are diluted. It absolute revolves around the brave and super smart Robinson family. However the robot is no longer an AI like in the original series. The new robot opens Us up to an entirely new universe in our galaxy.
There are some dialogue moments between the family members that are cringe (more so in season 3). But the rest of the show has lots of mystery, action, drama and suspense with lots of unexpected twists and turns.
A the incredible cast and production takes it to Hollywood caliber. A solid 8 of 10.
Hit-Monkey (2021)
A fast and fun farfetched action comedy
If you love fast paced action, anime-inspired fight sequences and an amazing cast this show should be in your list. As long as you are cool with a monkey as the protagonists with a human ghost side-kick...
Some funny comedy and smart written dialogues performed beautifully infront of the animated Asian backdrop full of lethal violence and revenge.
Ghosts (2021)
A shot for shot remake of the UK-version
If you have seen the original UK version, this US made Pilot almost shot-for-shot copies the original version.
It's absolutely a show you can't take seriously when you watch. It's a far fetched concept but that has cute humour but you won't miss it if it's gone.
Doom Patrol (2019)
Tries really hard to be entertaining
While the cast is seemingly interesting and occasionally hits and misses with newer characters. The show at is core is about friendship, family, compassion and a lot of great positive themes. However the "hero" show sees the "heroes" battling themselves and eachother more then villains and bad guys. The soundtrack is amazing and there is so much potential but it often deviates from that potential which is why lots of people just don't like Doom Patrol.
