Seungriho (2021)
Better than Star Wars.
Cheesy, funny, poignant, and a far more believable plot line than Star Wars. What more can one say? The direction was rocking, the special effects more than satisfying. The humour is a little baffling at times. A lot of slapstick. But I thought this was two hours of most enjoyable entertainment.
Awake (2021)
Average, predictable.
It has been compared to Birdbox, which in my opinion was a silly movie despite having the awesome Sandra. Awake was pedestrian and predictable but a good way to pass an hour or so provided one's expectations are not too high. Entirely spotted the ending right at the beginning.
Outside the Wire (2021)
Sad ending
An average movie, competently executed, and for a short while I had high hopes there would be a twist at the end in which the good old US of A learned a lesson about collateral damage an how numbers become meaningless when death and suffering are involved.
Cosmic Sin (2021)
Incoherent
Weighty themes ponderously presented with talented actors mumbling through their lines as if they phoned them in over a bad connection. What the hell was going on?
Bright (2017)
not your normal buddy-cop drama?
Yes it was.
This movie is the epitome of of Hollywood formulaic production values. "Orcs and fairies are so hot right now. Lets do another cop buddy movie but with orcs and fairies".
Predestination (2014)
An almost faultless adaption of Heinlein's short story "All You Zombies"
An almost faultless adaption of Heinlein's short story "All You Zombies" This film brings the credibility back to the genre of Science Fiction, which has been poorly-served by the movie industry, concentrating as it has lately on monsters in space, action in space, dystopia, and more monster/horror action.
The cast is excellent, the production superb, and the entire experience satisfying.
This is a movie I have wanted to see made since I was 14, back in 1966. It is the first ever that has not had a serious disappointment factor, as the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit did. To disclose any aspect of the plot would be a cruel spoiler to newcomers, and all I can say is that even if you are familiar with the original short story you will not be disappointed. Mr Heinlein can stop spinning in his Grave over what they did to Starship Troopers.
This film joins my top ten list of SF movies.
The Pirates of Blood River (1962)
Unmemorable Hammer Ffun
I saw this film once in 1967. My young friends and I had barely left the movie theatre and we had forgotten the plot of this movie. Apparently we got to see scenes that were cut when released elsewhere so it should have made more sense, but I remember in less than a week we argued over what had happened, and why. Since then we have forgotten almost everything about it, except for two things which we still laugh about today. One; the skeleton rising from the river after its flesh had been stripped from it by piranhas (why would a skeleton rise up? the don't float),and the terrible continuity gaffe of the potted palm tropical forest; one minute the trees were green and lush, in the next scene dry and brown, then back to green again.
But it was a Hammer film, and we loved Hammer films back then. Still do.
Aah nostalgia. But there is a lot to be said for production values and a budget.
Mackenna's Gold (1969)
Yep bad movie
I saw it when it was first released, and I remember thinking Plus: the sound. (particularly the use of stereo which we were still getting used to) Minus.. Almnost everything else.
I remember thinking too that Americans seemed to have a major preoccupation with long hair then. The gentlemen from Hadleyburg spoke on behalf of the establishment when they mocked a long haired youth. At a time in history when most people were long haired!
Considering it was made in 1969 when long haired hippies were still a worry to the establishment, the prejudices of the society are clearly reflected.
This film is memorable to me only for that insight.
