The White Chamber (2005)
Plays a little like Frankenstein
You take the part of a woman who wakes up in a coffin on a space station. So at least they let you know this is a horror game when you start. But don't think this is some tame game with monsters that go boo. Amongst other things your character suffers her way through being electrocuted while strapped to bed, attacked by monsters and being poisoned. Everything has a way out but if you fail you don't go nicely. No quick bullets to the head here.
The game is very enjoyable even though it's 2D. The voice acting is up to standard. Only regrets are the 2D, though if they did this in 3D it probably would be much too scary to play though you would be able to avoid looking at that eye thing. Music and sound effects are also very well done but as it's a horror they're also terrifying to listen to. If you're looking for something to terrify the wits out of you and Saw is too tame then this is what you want to play. Major upside its free but at 299MB you do need a reasonable speed connection to get it. As to why it plays like Frankenstein I'll let you find out.
Fast Food (2000)
This is just my taste in fast food
It plays out as a Godfather type of movie except that that you quickly realise that though these people live by the same rules as the Mafia they are merely running a fast food joint. Obviously when you are trying to do this kind of movie you have to balance the humour carefully so as not to bore the viewer. I have to say that while they generally succeed there are moments when I think the gag has gone on too long. But it soon moves on to some other aspect of the joints dubious business practises. True no fast food joint could hope to survive by assaulting its customers and staff but then it's not the sort of movie you are supposed to believe. As a movie its definitely worth watching but probably not with a mouthful of fries.
28 Days Later... (2002)
I watched it because the CD was so bad
The Times gave away a 10 minute preview CD of this movie and what I saw on that was so awful I thought it was a joke. I went to see the movie and it was just as bad. Firstly in an NHS hospital the patients possessions are put in a bag that is put under patients trolley, but he can't find them. Next he smashes the plastic fascia of a Pepsi machine and gets a can out, but behind that fascia is a solid steel panel, there is no way to get a drink out. Later he sees Manchester off in the distances which is on fire. A fire that large (think Dresden in WWII) would create gale force winds and the smoke would not rise vertically as it does here. But best of all although a large city is in flames and producing smoke the sky is blue. If you like bad movies you can laugh at then try this one, but if you like your movies remotely believable then skip it.
Tank Girl (1995)
Do you like mental gymnastics?
When I went to see this I knew of it through a friend who avidly collects this sort of graphic novel. I took a girlfriend who obviously hated the movie and I could understand why. It tended to be overloud with comic book graphics inserted throughout. For those not familiar with the original graphic novels these tended to confuse the viewer though they were intended to inform the audience about events. Along the line of a picture paints a thousand words and saves about a half hour of filming and £500,000. As a movie though it worked, but only if you were able to survive the mental anguish of following the action and then interpreting the meaning of the graphic that popped up for 5 seconds, and back to action but one week later after whatever the graphic meant. I could do it, but for most of the audience that day the movie was too much work to follow. If you are familiar with the Tank Girl books or like movies you can watch and learn more from on each showing then yes this one it is worth it. If you are renting a movie for a night then generally forget it.
