Ignore the bad reviews. This is edge of your seat TV
1 October 2022
In a similar manner to the show 'Breaking Bad' this series has all the markings of a series that will be a hit.

You have the normal people finding themselves involved in a large scale drug business and the police just a few steps behind and when the dead bodies start appearing it becomes harder and harder to cover ones tracks.

I wonder if they will explore the effect a large operation like this will have on a small fishing village. Its fascinating.

The acting and music are perfect in a beautiful setting in Ireland.

Please don't cancel this show it brilliant.

I eagerly await the next episode :)

Great show. Please make a Season 2
5 June 2022
I cant understand the negative reviews.

Sure i was picturing all females chasing the one last male but in a strange way the storyline made a lot of sense. Its more about trying to survive and fit in, than about procreation although that's always the underlying theme.

The production and actors were all excellent but the show needs more time to develop.

We are left with too many unanswered questions about the future of the human race.

That's why season 2 is necessary. Pleeeease!

Great high budget remake of the 2011 telenova spanish show
19 June 2019
Back in 2012 i had to watch this in Spanish as there were no subtitles and even then it was a great show. I wish Salvador " El Ratas" Zerboni was in this remake as he had a great presence in the Spanish version but the pace and acting in this 2016 remake is like the film Crank....non stop , makes you really not want to be a drug empire kingpin . Recommended.

Future pay-per-view reality snuff TV show
27 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
So the participants become unknowingly part of some pay per view reality snuff TV show. If those investigating police could have entered the building to be part of another round...that would have been fun. My main problem with the film are that these people are survivors and lucky to be alive, so to see them die in a game is not very satisfying.

a remake of "Small Time Gangster"
28 April 2019
As the title says, this HBO production is a remake of a very funny Australian TV series called "Small Time Gangster". As soon as i saw the apprentice forced upon Relu i knew this was a remake. The original apprentice says something like.." so when are we going to pop some bad guys??" .... the look on Tony Piccolo's face is priceless! Umbre lacks polish but has great lines and plot.

A great film about poor choices
22 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I haven't read the book so will just talk a little about my take on this film. The young man has many choices to make . Does he want a life of crime, if so, does he choose robbery, or selling drugs? Does he want a proper job? Then you have to question the employer. Does he want a professional driver? Does he choose a friend's son whose down on his luck? Will he trust this driver with his daughters life? Is he mature enough to stay out of parties, panties and politics? I like how they show this young man as confused. Is he into classical music or gangsta rap? Is he good or bad or a bit of both? When given a very good weekly wage how does he choose to spend his money? We see the protagonist drinking on duty and selling hard drugs, then trying to cover up his actions which backfire badly. The message of this story is to me about being careful who you get close to. About getting to know someone over a few months, not seconds, before trusting them. Its about terrible outcomes of making poor choices.

A sad film
1 January 2019
Many of us have been resentful of a potential step parent unwantedly stepping into a parent type role. Well what if a child went too far? This film explores cause and effect of a teenage girl who holds her uncaring father on a pedestal, and the lengths she will go to , to keep it that way. As the film progresses, we see that Cyrus, the mum's boyfriend, is not perfect, he has a drug addiction, seems set in his ways, and is weak at dealing with problems. That would describe many people we know. With all these shortfalls i still didn't want to see him the target of the daughters wrath. The plot makes me wonder if this has happened in real life. The daughter only realises her actions are all mistakes later on. I knock a star off as i would have liked to have seen the after-effects explored more deeply. Great film unless you want to see things blowing up : )

Gomorrah (2014–2021)
10/10
A violent survivalist guide to power struggles in crime families
19 May 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This series is highly addictive, in that the actors are all showing life from the criminal's perspective. Police play only side roles. As the body-count starts to rise so do unexpected plot developments.

This show reminds me of the Underbelly series and the Canadian 'Intelligence' Series. If you ever watch Underbelly...Benji's (Damian Walshe-Howling) position as a crime family skilled soldier in command is as mesmerising as Marco D'Amore's fine performance in Gomorrah as Ciro di Marzio. Both are stone cold killer psychopaths. Ciro you will like watching until he does something beyond words. Those you dislike you may start liking and vice-versa.. there is no good guy or bad guy to root for. I would still rate Underbelly as the better series, but that's only because it was based on true events. However Gomorroah has no lazy writing and could easily be related to actual events of some sort. We are left with the final scene of a twitching hand... is he still alive?? only Season 2 will tell. Watch it...you wont be sorry.

Are you a bad man??
14 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
those poor kids. Having fun then it all goes pear shaped.

With a simple to understand storyline, and 10year olds who play imaginative action games, its really fun to watch. They even learn to drive while playing and imagining car chases.

Children want things in black and white, are you a bad man? In this case its so hard for the children to pick an adult to trust. Who do you side with? the dodgey cop or the desperate crim? Both looked scary, in fact all the adults look scary in this film.

I found the ending too abrupt, I wanted to see the injured boy recovering, but apart from that it was fine

not really a TV movie
1 February 2015
SPOILER: I always thought a TV-movie meant suitable for all the family. Is it me or has the standard for what is classed a TV movie changed? I really like this movie although to start with, I almost gave up watching it because it looked too perfect ..living the dream etc...not much happening except small dramas, I mistakenly thought it was one of those "TV movies". Then there was some bad language, the rape, attempted murder, dead bodies, and revenge which was all the more entertaining without interference from other parties eg the police. But this message here of not calling the police is surely not a message to tell the masses? I love good revenge films such as this one but this film loses a star for being described as a TV or cable-movie.

Escobar and his lost paradise
21 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I couldn't stop watching this riveting film. Very suspenseful story, and very realistic portrayal of a brutal drug kingpin by Benicio del Toro . If you have ever read about Escobar you will see how factual much of this movie is. Escobar's demise was due to the attention he brought on himself by becoming too visible in the world of politics which he should have left well alone. A man who had everything but the wealth was not enough. This is a film about the terror Pablo puts his family and relatives through when things go wrong. Josh Hutcherson and Claudia Traisac have real on-screen chemistry as a couple in love, unfortunately having to adjust to a riches-to-rags situation where the bullets start flying. Do they survive? I'm not sure. There is no happy ending.

I give this film a 10, although should be a 9 because of unanswered questions...spoiler to follow : Why did Pablo not want Maria and Nick to go back to Canada?...instead ...forcing Nick to hide some of Pablo's wealth at a secret location then wanting Nick dead so the secret is safe. He could have asked non-family to do those dangerous jobs. Was Pablo that cold he wanted some of his family dead so he could never be baited? Recommended watching.

Warning: Spoilers
Well Boy what a turkey. I wish I could have pressed fast forward for 90% of this snooze-fest..but the remote control ( which is "still mine";) was lost or hiding from me harassing the fast forward button). I don't know what witchcraft studios use to flesh out movies but the weak plot could have been condensed into 5 minutes Elderly man decides his current abode simply wont do for his ailing trouble and strife. So out pops his hammer an i'm getting excited, Maybe he's about to kill anything that moves. But nooooo such luck. We don't all possess 2000 acres and a house to demolish because it might just need a lick of paint. Boringgggg.

Great prison flick
17 November 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this movie. A man goes to prison for accidentally killing someone and has a very tough time in the clink due to the warden receiving a bribe to make it so.

As with most films there are plot holes. Firstly, as it was self defence due to managing to avoid a knife attack he should never have gone to prison in the first place. Next, the warden could have blamed the guards death on him instead of some other inmate.

Putting those things aside I really liked the fight scenes and the way Ray deals with gang politics. All the things you want to say and do in real life would be suicide but Ray steps up and if he wasn't released would definitely be a gang leader like it or not. Its a prison film so you see a fair amount of gory violent scenes where inmates are murdered. which in itself makes you never want to be in a place like that. Loved it.

Awesome show
9 March 2014
I cant believe no one has written a review on here about this fantastic show. Most of Australia's viewing audience are tuning in to this one and no one visits IMDb ??!! OK so we get spoonfed some of the plot , e.g Tony doing a runner, but this reminds me of the Fugitive....the hunted (Mokbel) always trying to stay one step ahead of the law. His positioning in the drugs war meant that he was able to dodge most bullets, but 1 by 1 the people he knows are being killed so its only a matter of time before the noose tightens around his neck. Based on true events makes this even more compelling viewing although I would recommend newcomers to this series to first watch Underbelly season 1 which to me is the best TV series of all time.

Small time gangster, big time laughs
13 December 2011
I've enjoyed this dark comedy quite a lot so far. The basic plot is about an underworld debt collector who wants to go straight but somehow finds himself forced to cope with rising notoriety wthin the ranks of the criminal organisation he is working for. Contrary to another review on here, there is a lot of dark humour that can have you in stitches. If you want a serious crime drama, go and watch "Underbelly". This is much lighter material but never predictable. And married to a sex starved woman, what a lucky man ! He is perfect for this role, a lot of the humour comes from watching his facial expressions when confronted with unexpected problems. I give this series a 10 / 10 for an original plot line.

Moral - Don't splash out on a new car straight away!
10 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
If you want to be entertained you could do a lot worse than this nail biter. Sean Bean as an eccentric criminal who just cannot understand the benefits of rounding off his ill gotten gains, no, he has to have all the money to the last cent. This film is one crazy ride but it has to lose marks for 1) why would a man carry obscene cash everywhere he goes and carry out attention seeking activities e.g. robberies with no car reg. plates, thereby endangering his stash 2) why the couple didn't just finish the 911 call when Sean first walked into their house? Don't let those weaknesses put you off watching this roller coaster, would you have done the same if a windfall came your way?

The Third Nail avoids tackiness.
14 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Fine acting with an interesting storyline, this film had me guessing until the real culprit who murdered Trey's daughter is revealed towards the end.

What makes the film hold your interest is finding out about Trey's difficult upbringing and if that sheds any light on who killed his daughter.

I liked how heavy handed and suspicious the FBI were initially with Trey, and thankfully they wisen up soon enough.

I didn't like how clean-cut Trey and the other prisoners were. No stubble or ragged look etc made it less realistic.

Also the punishment metered out to the child murderer fell far, far too short of the fate he deserved. Great name for the film, the director really nailed it on the head there!.

Perhaps one message this film is trying to convey is that if you are sent to prison, it can mess your life up in many more ways than you could possibly imagine.

Tyson (2008)
8/10
A much needed film of a truly great boxer.
12 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Superb film of Tyson. He is shown here as generally a humble man who went to the top of his profession, then lost that boxing hunger for success (It reminds me of Tupac telling Biggie Smalls in Notorious B.I.G, that you can only go downhill from here!).

One can't help but feel that when Cus died, he felt angry to be left alone. In his own words, he couldn't trust anyone, and when success came his way it made no difference. Don King saw to that.

After a while he became less disciplined and relied mostly on his natural talent, he rightly shows how proud he was to regain the title after so little training.

Also i felt that the worst decision he could have made was choosing to be involved with a famous actress. The look on his face when his soon to be ex-wife is 'washing her dirty linen in public' was one of betrayal. As Mohammed Ali once said, even when famous..friends are hard to find. This film shows Tyson in many ways similar to Ali, embracing the Muslim faith, going through many relationships, looking for understanding and acceptance.

This film is very well made to allow the viewer to decide what kind of person the great Mike Tyson was, and is today. A far cry from the way he was portrayed in the media throughout his career.

Finally, i cannot resist saying that there is no human on this earth so far, that could have beaten Mike when he was at the top of his game.

Good remake let down by the ending
25 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I really like horror films that re-enact what could happen to any family on vacation given the right circumstances. Much more realistic than the 'Saw' or 'Hostel' movies which relied too much on planning and much less on impulsive decisions and opportunity which makes up 90% of all crime. The two girls ended up in an unfamiliar motel, and one decides to ring her parents to let them know she will stay over, if you can accept this, then you will have a shock seeing how events unfold and go from bad to worse. The rape is inevitable, then killing, these things happen in life somewhere everyday, its not fun to watch, but very realistic. The attempted escapes have you on the edge of your seat although in real life they would be bound. Overall a very tense film which keeps you thinking, What would you do if you were the parents? As a just revenge for raping and almost killing a young woman who has to live with this for the rest of her life, the main protagonist was let off with an unfair quick death. The paralysis incisions in place of duck tape was brilliant, but to then spoil it by treating his head like a ready meal left you feeling empty. He should have removed his hands and feet and blinded him, to live the rest of his life in a disabled home. Death was too easy.

Very Good Film
19 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The Korean Oldboy was OK but IMHO this version is much better. There is more atmosphere and it really holds your attention from start to finish. Whoever prefers the original is entitles to their opinion, but songs are always remade by sometimes better singers, so why not films? How amazing 14 years of hatred and desire for revenge can change when the victim realises finally why he was locked up for so long. My only criticism of this film is where justice for the suicide of a school girl is metered out by making sure the victim's undiscovered daughter is to lose her virginity. Perhaps in Indian custom the latter is as bad as losing a daughter i don't know. Acting by Sanjay Dutt and the rest of the cast was amazing and i hope to see more films from India like this one soon.

Forced humour tacked onto what could have been a naturally funny yarn
10 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Considering how much acting talent Britain has, from what manure heap where did they dig up these sorry excuse for acting professionals. The lead actors esp Kate Ashfield were very wooden and unconvincing. The writing lacked purpose and meandered....do we really want to see silly neighbourly disputes and crazy residents.... and whats with Bjorn killing other chip shop owners with no police presence whatsoever except for a siren once....which was well timed to stop me falling asleep. The were too many plot holes to make this a great film. I gave 2 stars as i did learn about the existence of plastic guns designed to foil security.

wonderful character study
9 September 2007
i loved this film in all it rawness. A powerful film giving insight into the mind of a psychopath and his sidekick. Yes i was rooting for the girls most of the time and i couldn't help but find a morbid fascination with the power play here and also why he had a need to kill. I didn't care about the quality of the film, the acting was great by everyone. What sets this film apart IMHO is how you are put in a position to feel the control and power Grone had. The isolated area this takes place in adds to the chill factor. A dangerous film for sure if it was more well known as it most certainly would influence power hungry serial killers or even perhaps just the meekly curious general public. It will stick in your mind for a long time to come like it or not.

Very good movie let down by some obvious weaknesses
15 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Overall this was a very good film about exploitation and trouble that revolves around the lives of pimps, prostitutes and the homeless when dealing with the sometimes disgusting demands of the paying punters.

First of all the positive points, brilliant flashbacks were used but not too many times thankfully which didn't confuse but added clarity to the story behind the girl Joanne's predicament. The use of the pimps cut leg and the prostitute Kelly's black eye helped a great deal to let the viewer know that flashbacks were happening, although it did seem strange that the pimp was expected to run around on a gammy leg.

The major disbelief for me was at the end when the two unarmed pimps were following the armed criminals car. I don't think anyone in their right mind would follow an armed car into an isolated field so that justice can be served let alone pimps who always make enemies by the nature of their job. Also would a punter whose intention it is to torture a virgin 11 year old, expect no trouble in his own house with her friend downstairs?? I think all women on the game or about to consider going on the game should watch this film not to scare, but to protect themselves against weirdos and such like, who know that prostitutes don't usually have mummy and daddy to turn to when a trick turns bad.

hostile hostel 2 critics need their heads examined (or drilled)
4 June 2007
What a masterpiece! As a fan of realistic horror gore films, this is the cream of the crop. This film reminds me very much of Salo - 120 days of sodomy, but much more enjoyable. Contrary to some critics i thought the first film was good in principle but the plot holes made the whole thing unrealistic and laughable. The people employed to attract fresh slaughterhouse recruits seem more professional in this sequel. It is rare for the sequel to surpass the first film but in this case it does. The gory sequences are not overly long or gruesome, thanks to most tools not being cordless! The strong message in the film is about what predicaments you could find yourself in by trusting strangers too much, something happy go lucky tourists are all too keen to do, but then we cant spend out life wrapped in cotton wool. The contrast of extrovert and introverted tourists is also very clever, as it makes no difference when you take a chance. Bring on hostel 3.

Tearjerker
10 May 2007
This film made me cry when the mother is losing her family. in fact its the only film i can think of that made me cry. Its one of those films that has such touching moments that it remains one of the unforgettable films of the 90s. I think the sympathy here is in the fact she totally has her heart in the right place but the bureaucratic machinery cannot see that. Its one of the very few films which truly shows what it means to be a decent parent. Too many American films show upwardly mobile professionals as parents with very few real problems. Sherrybaby is another film of a low achiever but the lead in that film loses sympathy points due to her promiscuity and drug habit. Rent this film if you want a good cry....best watched alone!
