Impact (2009)
Much better than expected.
I went into this expecting a low budget sci-fi film with play it by numbers acting and dreadful effects but was really surprised. I thought the acting in this was excellent, as was the story (whether its plausible or not does not bother me). The effects were really well done with only the train wreck being a bit weak. The scenes of the moon looking huge in the sky were very eerie and will stay in the mind as they did look terrific.
I thought the running time of 3 hours really suited it as well although I watched it all in one go, you can easily spread this over 2 nights because the break means there is a bit of a cliff hanger.
I also must give a mention to the score as that was again first rate.
Although I am a bit of a sucker when it come to disaster type movies, I put this right up there with Armageddon and Deep Impact. It just shows that you can make a good action film on a limited budget and not compromise.
8/10
The Burning Moon (1992)
Nasty - nasty - nasty
I have given this 9 out of 10 for purely the gore effects alone. The rest of the film is weak but for all the gore hounds out (myself included) it is a serious assault on the senses so don't watch this with your female partner as you will be single by the end of the film as most of the serious stuff is at the end.
Believe me the effects are very very good, so good in fact that a rumour existed that this was not special effects ! but if you can find it (almost impossible here in the UK) then make up your own mind but be warned its hard viewing.
I have only seen it in the original German language and I am not sure if it has even got a DVD release but I may be wrong (I am searching now).
Death Shock (1981)
Interesting UK adult film - if you can find it
I spent 15 years trying to find this film before finally picking up a UK pre certificate tape of it.
Well it was pretty much just as I expected it to be.Lots of soft core action with obscured viewing angles and action just out of screen etc. In fact you could be forgiven for calling this a soft core Ben Dover since the director Steve Perry went on to create the Ben Dover series and this plays exactly like a Ben Dover film. You do get the feeling that there are hardcore scenes that have been removed but I don't know of a stronger version.
Not really worth the £50 I paid for it (uk pre certificate tapes are very collectible) but a worthy addition to my collection none the less.
The Grimleys (1999)
A Real Gem of a Sit Com
Well where do I start ? This is a true forgotten gem that everyone should see.
Set in the mid 70,s Dudley,West Midlands to a background of Glam Rock, it tells the story of The Grimley family and Gorden in particular and his attempt to deal with his growing love for his English teacher played by Amanda Holden.
He arch enemy is Doug Digby the PC teacher played brilliantly by Brian Conley. This leads to some great scenes and you really feel for Gorden.
What sets this apart is the supporting cast and how their involvement makes the whole thing click especially Gordons mum and her 'relationship' with Mr Tiley next door.I wont spoil it but its inspired writing.
The supporting cast includes Nigel Planner and Jan Ravens as Gordons parents and a wonderful cameo from Noddy Holder as Neville Holder the music teacher.I loved his acoustic sets in the school singing some of his Slade hits - magical.
In fact the whole soundtrack really completes each episode.Every song really suits every scene.
The biggest question is why this has not been released on DVD :( 9 out of 10.
Armchair Cinema: Regan (1974)
An excellent top notch drama.
This is the original TV play that was the forerunner to the successful UK TV series 'The Sweeney'.It is well worth tracking down now as it is not easy to find on either VHS or DVD.It rarely turns up on TV either. Excellent story and top drawer acting plus some great location shots too.Just look how much London has changed ! It is not as violent or bloody as the series it spawned as it concentrates more on Regan's home life although that is not a bad thing. I thought Carter was a bit too mild here but other than that there is an excellent supporting cast. The music and soundtrack is very 70,s and it is missing the usual Sweeney theme. If you get the chance to see it don't miss it.
