Just Friends (2005)
Formulaic? Yes. But really funny!
This film really delivers. It sets you up thinking - seen this all before admittedly in reverse where the ugly girl grows up to be a beautiful swan not the guy - but I have to say Ryan Reynolds does a great job with a fantastic supporting cast (him and his brother are hilarious) and I would recommend a watch. The set up initially caused me some concern thinking it was just another 'lets laugh at the fat kid' movie but actually I found it was not about him being over weight or geeky, but just about how we are when we are teenagers. The scene where he is singing into a mirror - genius. And let's face it, we have all been there.... It's not the greatest movie ever made, not even the greatest RomCom ever made but it was really enjoyable and a good laugh. A pleasant surprise.
The Dresden Files (2007)
Dresden
Being a huge fan of the Jim Butcher books, I looked forward to this Sci-fi commissioned series with anticipation. Originally I was in favour of James Marsters being considered for the lead as he was so wonderful with the audio books and, lets face it, everything he does! However Paul Blackthorne has made the role his own in a short space of time and the series is starting to work really well with each episode. With any book to TV adaptation, it is important to consider the two as very different and I feel we need to allow the TV series to find it's own identity. Bob is taking some getting used to but this is all part of telling the story in a different way and allowing the creators to give us a new take on the story telling. I would recommend this series, especially if you miss shows like Buffy & Angel as it has huge potential for developing into something really fab. ** Addition: ** Now well into the first few episodes I LOVE THIS! Please say this is worthy of a second season - real potential here!
Chance (2002)
Worth a look - not just as a James Marsters Fan
I took a 'chance' and bought this film, but know that others may be wondering whether it is worth a view. Amber Benson does an admirable job here as writer/director/lead actor and her casting of James Marsters was inspired, if very understandable as a result of the Buffy link. He has obvious pedigree and audience appeal, which will immediately reach a greater range of viewer. But one soon realizes that you are not watching 'Spike' and that his role as Simon, the love interest, is rather engaging in it's own right. For those huge fans of James - I know there are many - this film allows him to shine ever brighter, whilst exploring a very different character. And there is sufficient romance to please. It is a real shame this film does not have a distributer. They are missing a huge market if the James Marsters web sites are to be believed. Give it a go if you can get hold of a copy. Well worth a look.
