John Mulaney Presents: Everybody's in LA: EARTHQUAKES (2024)
Mulaney has charmed his way to the top
I didn't know what to think about this show when I first saw the first few episodes. John has an understated charm and wit that kind of melds with what Letterman was doing all during his career. If there's an awkward pause? John will make it work. If there's a bit that needs to be explored? John will make it work, whether it's asking what kind of cars people drive or taking calls about a previous episode in jest. This show is a great exercise in just letting a comedian do what they want to do and giving it time. Mulaney is funny, no one will argue that. But give him this format over time and you have a guaranteed hit on your hands.
Silo: Outside (2023)
Worst acting from supporting cast I've seen in a long time
This show had me from the start, the first 2 episodes REALLY locked me in instantly. What could be outside of the silo? Why would the people hide the truth? It was gripping and intelligent. Then came the next 7 episodes. Almost pure filler and not only did we not learn one thing aside from there are huge secrets. Nothing was solved. That aside, the real problem I have is with the acting from Common and Tim Robbins (who I'm a huge fan of btw). They are not believable in the slightest and it really detracts from the show and the other actors. It ripped me right out of the immersion. I really wish this show had given us a little bit more in episodes 3-9 and still will watch it but these problems have damaged an otherwise incredible plot.
Nate Bargatze: Hello World (2023)
Dude turned himself into mister rogers
I like Nates older stuff alot this just seemed a little too PG for me. Like it was standup for young kids and/or 50+ married folks with kids. There were some good jokes in there but its mostly Nates inherent delivery that drives it. Wouldn't say it was bad but just dry and lacking any real substance. It was almost like this was his layup material. It didnt seem that great to me but I'm sure 51 year old dads will love it. Theres a place for clean comedy but from someone as accomplished as he is in the scene I wish he would break out of his shell and explore different avenues instead of the same ole schtick.
Imawa no Kuni no Arisu: Episode 7 (2022)
"Come here"
Remember guys, if you're going to lead a trained assassin into a trap put your gun away instead of shooting them and use these exact words. "Come here." I mean they were clearly hammered drunk when they wrote this episode. The sheer amount of people that got shot and stabbed multiple times and then survived only to die only to survive again was incredible. The plot armor was was thicker than the armor of the King of Spades who despite going against 300 people with a couple guns and a knife, dispatched almost everyone with ease. Idk other than that it was an alright episode I guess but man get ready to put your brain away for sure...
Stranger Things: Chapter One: The Hellfire Club (2022)
More of the same stalling
As much as I admire the 80s theatrics and set pieces just like season 2 and 3 the entire plot is based around nothing happening for about 90% of the screen time. I literally cannot get past character development that isnt chracter development at all. I do like the show I just wish 75% of the show wasnt filler.
Upload: Download (2022)
7 episodes really?
Man I remember not so long ago when shows were pulling 25 episode seasons..now we can't even get 8 which is such a shame because this show is hilarious. Its very well written as well but could have really used an extra 3 episodes for more character driven episodes. Still a great season and laughed alot.
The Expanse: Redoubt (2021)
LOL Imagine losing to a crate
Crate 1, Arm 0. This show was pretty amazing all the way up until season 5 where Naomi spent 7 episodes sobbing in a dark room. Season 6 is ok..I guess? It's incredibly forgettable. I'm 4 episodes in and not one thing important has happened other than them letting Marco go. The set design and scale seems very cheap compared to other seasons as well.
Immoral Compass (2021)
Please Netflix or Hulu pick this up!!!
Its brilliant! The style, the actors, the cinematography. It's like Chappelle's show but darker, shorter and more modern. Top it off with an unfiltered Bill Burr as a "host" of sorts and you've got a brilliant recipe for a show! Think of the possibilities to come! I love it keep em coming.
You (2018)
Why do female writers always try to normalize women cheating because they feel insecure
It's happening more and more and it honestly blows my mind how many shows (written by females) will have the woman knowingly cheat because of a brief lapse in sexiness or being understood by their husband. Not only that but they always go right back to the relationship like nothing happened and lie about it like it's just normal behavior. This show is good but I'm tired of this cliche.
Theo Von: Regular People (2021)
I mean it's better than No Offense, but that's not saying much
Theo is funny on his podcast but I feel like he is just too nervous during filming. He has a cult following though so whoever goes to his shows will still participate because they like him as a person. As much as I wanted to like this special more, it just seemed like fake stories with even more zany cartoon like scenarios expanding from them.
Dave: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (2021)
Idk what the point of this show is anymore honestly.
It feels like they're just trying to be edgy to add random things happening like it has meaning. Dave is just incredibly self involved with no seemingly redeeming qualities and NO resolution. Or purpose. I feel like they're trying to be Atlanta in some ways but it's just not working.
The Gambler (2014)
A movie about not knowing how to bet, also not knowing the value of money.. or what debt means.
A depressed guy with Aspergers makes terrible decisions then decides to go for a very long run. After of course making his mother cry for no apparent reason when she helps him. Also after being coddled by the mob(more than one actually) into acquiring debt with them being the wrong thing to do. After wasting all the money during an obvious autistic episode where he goes on to waste hundreds of thousands of dollars in a few hours at a casino. He decides he should go back to the evil people he knows he owes money to unarmed to ask for more money and somehow almost convinces them without saying a word other than "give me more money now". Oh yeah all this happens while some hot student in his class falls in love with how "gentle" he is as a person etc.
