Samaritan (2022)
One of the better Super Hero movies made.
No it's not Marvel and it's not DC. Thank goodness. I know all the comic book baby boomers out there love the Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Capt America etc. We started on Marvel and DC in the late 60's early 70's and spent every cent we earned from mowing yards on our collections. That was our get-away, our fantasies, our imaginations release. It was a great world. Even though a war in Vietnam raged, civil rights being fought for and political turmoil was going on, somehow life seemed easier when the Fantastic Four defeated the Mole man, Dr. Doom and The Super Skrull. When Disney took Marvel I think many of us gave up. I did. In my opinion I think it's gone down hill. Tobey McGuire's Spiderman movies were great. Iron Man 1 and Cap America were very good. Hulk and Incredible Hulk were iffy. Just kept going down from there. But they weren't looking to please the 60's Generation, they were looking to capture the now Gen. Hook em while their young like the Comic books of yesterday got the senior citizens of today. I could be wrong. I don't care. Having said that to make up 600 words. I will say.
Anything independent of Disney automatically gets a minimum 4 star rating period and then it's built on from there. This is a great story. Stallone is a great actor. The supporting actors were good. The movie was grounded in much more realism than fantasy. No armor outfits that are space worthy, no interplanetary invaders or dimensional portals ripping open time and space, just a good movie. I thought the kid actor was a bit over the top, then I put myself in that position if I had been him at that age and at that time. He did well, above average. Again, I could be wrong.
Elysium (2013)
Small look at the future
I enjoyed this movie on a few levels. As an avid sci-fi buff I like a good story and this is a good story. But I also enjoy the philosophical idea this movie presents because it is not so far fetched. The movie itself is a struggle between classes which somewhat parallels today's society in the US where the rich get richer and the poor stay poor. There is no longer a middle class... If you have money you live the good life, get medical treatment and live peacefully on The Elysium Space platform. If you're not rich you fend for yourself on a wasted Earth.
Elysium is a movie, but also a political commentary on absolute power. We all know what absolute power does, but I won't get into that.
Matt Damon is solid as well as Jodie Foster. The special effects are good, not great. The character development is sparse, but given the time frame of a movie that's expected. The movie will make you think long after you leave the theater.
Browncoats: Redemption (2010)
Helping to keep a Great Dream Alive
I have to agree with others that the film left me.. well.. just left me.. Of course a fan film isn't going to match JW work.. hell JW will have a tough time matching his work in Firefly.. Firefly was a unique mix of cast, crew, plot, acting, personalities and etc that will probably never be matched.. anyway I digress.. The film was good considering they had no budget.. no real sets and scenes and no real actors.. the acting was forced and not believable in my opinion..so I split my vote.. and 5 is average for me..It would take a few 100K to make a good 40 minute movie.. these guys made a fair movie on 0.00$ basically.. Firefly fans are the best fans in the 'verse.. and you want to agree with me.. or else you might damage my calm... Still Flying..
Firefly (2002)
Just a crazy fan I guess...
It's been over 10 years since FOX canceled Firefly and I watch past episodes on a weekly basis.. sounds stupid? or obsessive? probably... but what Joss and crew created was my world.. of coarse not the world I live in.. but the world I wished I could live in.. The atmosphere created by the Firefly crew was a home I never had and had always wanted. Sound crazy.. I suppose.. but for a few brief moments while watching the show.. I forgot about the thousands of dollars of debt I was in.. I forgot about the 12 hours of hard work I had just completed and had to go to the following day.. I didn't worry about paying my taxes or the wars we were fighting around the world.. everything here didn't matter.. cause Firefly was on and I was there. I still escape once in awhile and watch the Movie Serenity often.. because they are written with people like me in mind.. Fox didn't care about people.. they only care about money and that's the bottom line.. shows you their true colors for canceling a show that has a 9.2 rating here...the series and movie were a brief Renaissance in TV shows.. and with a fan base larger than any other show in history it's "Still Flying'
