Based on a True Story (2023)
Is it genius? No. Is it fun? Yep!
Fun way to spend an evening. An interesting premise. The main characters were all kinda unlikeable, except for the killer himself, he was cool. Some reviews say that it drifted and ended on a cliff hanger.... well, yeah, but that leaves it open for a 2nd season. With the drifting, I agree that there seemed to be a few story lines happening at once, but were all connected so wasn't an issue. Yeah it could have been done better, some of the 'dream sequence' moments were over done, but didn't ruin it. Some nice quirky moments, unexpected giggles. It's in a similar vein to Santa Clarita Diet, which I'd recommend over this, but it's harmless fun.
Northspur (2022)
Great engaging film.
Okay, the reason for the 8 is I have never given a 10 for anything! This film is a great engaging story, with some awesome action scenes, great visuals and camera work. Casting was great, particularly Josh McKenzie as Kellan, who I feel carried the film. Was obviously great to see Marshall Napier, he really embodied the role of Summers. Nell Fisher as Tia was amazing. Such a young actor, and so talented. The setting was perfect for the post apocalyptic vibe, and the homes and cabins so well created and dressed. A very believable visual. I went into this film with the brief of being a harsh critic... Were there things I could be picky about? Yes. But only a couple of tiny things that in no way detracted from the film. I struggle with going to the cinema because as soon as I sit still I involuntarily fall asleep...but with this... I didn't struggle at any point! The genre of post apocalyptic survival has been done many times, but this felt fresh and exciting. Very enjoyable film, very believable characters, and great visuals. Well done!
Windfall (2022)
Funnier than I expected!
Anyone giving this a low review is missing a lot! It's a cool story, good characters, good interactions, and some dry sneaky subtle jokes that had me laughing in the lounge on my own - not many films manage that one! Often I struggle to keep engaged for a whole film, but I didn't play on ,y phone at all during this one!
Drain the Titanic (2015)
Could have been a 10 minute doco
I love most things on the Titanic. This is a cool doco, but stretched out to 45 minutes by repeating the same "now, as never seen before, the ocean drained away" and lots of slow dramatic statements like "and on that deadly night, when disaster struck, an iceberg, it tore a hole" like, it's really not new info. Very repetitive, lots of seen before footage, with a few cool views of CGI ship with the water drained. Kinda background TV while you're playing on your phone :/
Left Behind (2014)
It's fine
Don't know why this has got such low scores. It's fine. It's entertaining, not genius, not ground breaking but a decent enough film to keep you interested. Harmless and entertaining. Why not :D.
Deadly Switch (2021)
Fun and cheesy
It's a nice film, decent entertainment for when you can't be bothered watching something that needs too much concentration. Fairly predictable, but some nice tense moments. It's definitely a TV movie, not a cinematic experience. I liked it.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
Awesome!
This is fantastic! I watched the version dubbed in English, and it felt natural, not forced. Such a cool story, each episode is exciting and good fun. People have said they don't like the VIPs acting, but I think it's appropriate for those characters to have no real depth, they're supposed to be superficial people. Have a watch for an ace fun series, I watched the lot over a couple of nights :D.
Gi-eok-ui bam (2017)
If you like Oldboy you'll like this.
The Korean film industry is fantastic. This is yet another dark, twisted, unpredictable thriller. You're never quite sure what's going to happen next, and it's a dark delight when it does. Great story, great acting. Go enjoy an intense journey!
Slender Man (2018)
Aww don't be harsh
This is a cute horror, perfect for your pre-teens Halloween sleepover. It's silly and fun, and spooky for the younger kids. It's a kind of wholesome horror haha! Would I recommend it to someone who's a horror fan? No. Would I enjoy spooking the youngsters with it? Yes :D.
Host (2020)
Cute, fun little horror
Nicely done, felt like being in a Zoom with my mates, very natural. Fun scares, nice and jumpy :) Good little romp.
Coherence (2013)
Brilliant!
I don't often leave reviews, but this is an awesome film. I want everyone to watch it so I can talk about it with them! Clever, but in a very accessible way, gets you thinking. Kept me hooked all the way through, and I'm notorious for falling asleep during films haha! It's low budget, but doesn't feel that way, definitely a quality film.
Wir sind die Welle (2019)
Brilliant
Great series. Got a nice serious story to carry it along, but the relationships and dynamics between the friends/associates/parents are great. Yeah it's political, but it's highly engaging and a good watch. And despite the heavy story line, it's a very 'easy' watch :)
Blown Away (2019)
I liked it!
If you like the Face Off series, or Skin Wars, you'll like it. It's creative, a mix of likeable and not so likeable contestants, and fun to watch the process of glass blowing. And glass sculpting, not just blowing :P
The Bye Bye Man (2017)
Fun!
This was a good, fun horror! The acting was fine, and the story was interesting. For a horror it was nicely original, the twisty turny moments cleverly done, kept me interested and tense in all the right places. If you like horror, with a psychological aspect, give it a go, I reckon it's well worth it.
High-Rise (2015)
Very interesting!
This film is not mainstream, not for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. Basically its about a high rise apartment block which degenerates in a Lord of the Flies fashion. The point of the film is pretty much the idea that isolation from others develops a further need for isolation, and less positive social interaction. As things progress to become darker and darker, the high rise becomes the whole world for these people and the desire to control, or conquer, their environment is all consuming. Bear in mind that the book was written in a time where this type of living wasn't the norm, and it was a fearful look at how, at the time, this kind of living could affect people. Quite arty, and very true to the book. I recommend giving it a go...
