Persuasion (2022)
Meh.
It strayed so very far away from the book. It kept the general plot, and a few lines (mainly wentworth's letter) were accurate, but the rest of the movie dialogue was oddly updated to modern language and it just felt not genuine to the time period.
As a stand alone film, it was pretty good. But I felt like they tried to hard to make it modern. Any period piece Netflix makes ends up with a lot of racial diversity... which, while I 100% support that for movies in general, it's just not accurate to the time period. And that's just another level of trying to change the story that Jane Austen was originally trying to tell I think.
A redeeming actor was Cosmo Jarvis, he portrayed the sting of pain in love perfectly throughout the movie. I enjoyed his acting.
So, as a hardcore Jane Austen fan.... Meh.
And as a general chick flick watcher... I might watch it again at some point. Haha.
Lost in Space (2018)
Hooked!
The show overall has me hooked. It was slow at first, kind of kiddish, and sometimes the teens dialogue was silly/annoying BUT the plot toward the end of the first season gets surprisingly good. Then after waiting 1.5 years for another season I was thoroughly happy with the 2nd season taking us even further into the LOS world. And that cliff hanger!! Man, why ya gotta do that, Netflix!?
The graphics are insanely good. The show is completely clean. A rarity for Netflix original series these days. The format of the show could stand to be slightly more original.
But this show, for what it is: a family/kid friendly sci-fi show, is so well done!!
Many Beautiful Things (2015)
Captivating
I stumbled upon this movie because of Sleeping At Last, whose music has been a favorite of mine for a while now. I listened through the soundtrack, knowing immediately I had to see the movie. I knew nothing of Lillias Trotter before watching. Let me tell you, from the first scene I was captivated by not only her story and her art, but by the storytelling of the documentary.
Masterfully done in every way. I was breathless at the final scene, tears in my eyes, and as soon as the credits rolled, I started the movie over and watched it again.
Lillias is a new hero and role model and this movie truly captures her life and vision.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
Great Fun
The most fun I've ever had dancing and singing at a movie theater! Haha.
A few points of slight annoyance for me was the auto tuning "fake" sound they used for the singers. I know all of these people can sing magnificently, so I was a little baffled at why they would do that. Also, the little person was horribly animated, nowhere near realistic looking.
Those are the smallest of points compared to the Larger Than Life story this film is. The nostalgia and metaphor are strong and wistful. The actors are well cast, the costuming was delightful. The songs... oh the songs! I dare you to try watching it and not have them stuck in your head for months following. Go see it NOW!
