The Devil's Hour (2022)
For ppl who like to solve the puzzle
If you like detective/horror and mind benders stick around. I almost dropped off during first episode but very very happy I didn't.
Acting is superb all around. I came in for Peter Capaldi, and he was great as expected but so was everyone, and especially impressed with the child actor. Story is very well written, I could watch it again just to see every little detail they hid and how it fits together so well. Great execution, except it's a little hard to get into it at the start.
I really want them to make more as I now have the itch for it, but not sure if they could. Works well as a one off.
Star Trek: Discovery: Coming Home (2022)
Will make you give up on the franchise.
Long time Trek fan suffering through discovery due to the faint hope that cinematography, effects, set design, acting etc. Could overcome horrible writing. This episode finally made me give up on it. The writing was so bad I was actually yelling at the TV.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Funny at times
They did great considering the premise was to make an entire movie out of cut scenes... Oh that wasn't the premise?
Could have been 30min shorter but then they'd have to cut...
Well ok they had a really nice budget? Good cast, effects, funny at times, great overall message. I did fall asleep, but I did come back and, begrudgingly finish it later.
Costume Quest (2019)
Gorgeous silly wholesome fun
Gorgeous art, and strong storytelling. Silliness constantly makes me smile.
All the different costumes are fantastic! I'm sure all those different characters/costumes makes it a very expensive show to create but I appreciate it.
Some family shows are designed for kids with a lot still in it for adults. I think Costume Quest is a bit predictable for adults, but it's still so gorgeous and entertaining that you'll really enjoy it. Super wholesome and lots of fun.
Treadstone (2019)
High production value, poor writing.
I really wanted to like Treadstone because it's seemingly inspired by some very real CIA mind control experiments (many took place in a psychiatric hospital in Montreal in the 50s and 60s). Even watched up to the fifth episode. But I can't ignore how consistently (multiple times each episode) their characters do things that make zero sense, unbelievable or go against their interest. Just feels like lazy writing.
The Expanse (2015)
Best Sifi I've ever seen! GOT of the future.
By far the best Sifi I have ever seen! I love Sifi but you don't need to love sifi to enjoy this game of thrones esc realistic future. Starts off a bit slow but picks up and then it gallops. Season 1 is great, season 2 is better and so far season 3 has been incredible. The deeper you go the better it gets.
It's far enough out that we've colonized our solar system but have not ventured out side of it. In this future, the technology has become more advanced (in a fairly scientific realistic way) but human nature hasn't changed. We're still struggling with politics the quest for power and control but in a entirely new theater. If Game of Thrones has done it for the past, Expanse has done it for the future.
This is true SiFi where they've taken the time to try to make things very realistic, scientific, believable. They treat space like a character and it really feels like one. Science Fantasy (like star wars) has it's place and I appreciate it. But true Science Fiction (like Star Trek the TV shows) where it is based in the actual science is rare to come by. The expanse is a breath of fresh air in a category filled with fluff.
Having the writing based on a books with the authors heavily involved has probably really helped ensure that quality. The scenes are epic, each battles feels entirely unique not just form themselves but from anything ever been done in the genre (at least from what I've seen). They push the boundaries of how you think spaceships battle while actually being much more realistic. The production is incredibly high.
I can't say it enough, go watch this. Or if you're going to not watch it, skip to watching clips of the battles on YouTube. You won't be disappointed (but I promise the characters and politics are worth getting in more then just the battle clips).
