I'll Fly Away (1991–1993)

a wonderful show that deserves better.

I've been waiting 27 years for this show to become available, first on VHS and then on DVD. It was a gripping show, far above the norm for TV or cinema. It is some kind of stupid that it was cancelled when it was and has never become available for later generations to watch. In the current era, we need it more than ever.

Fun & games

Warning: Spoilers
OK, this is not "Citizen Kane", for one thing it's in color and there's no sled. Does everything have to be High Art? It's a fun little romp that doesn't take itself too seriously and should be accessible to anyone who has ever played any role-playing game (D&D, T&T, etc, etc) not just LARPers. Many of the complaints I've seen strike me as odd. For example: Why is it hard to understand Red-necks beating up on freaks/geeks/nerds? That's what they do, always have, always will. At least that's the case in all the states I've lived in in the last 59 years (Iowa, Colorado, Washington) but maybe it's different in big cities? I do have to agree that there seems to be something missing. I'd love to know what the producers edited out of the original director's cut. My guess would be mostly character development, probably during the "quests" the groups at the LARP are sent on during the first day. At least night seems to arrive rather quickly! That seems to be the sort of thing Hollywood considers surplus. At any rate, if you are willing to just enjoy a movie without requiring some weird level of perfection, Knights of Badassdom is funny and worth an evening.
