The Great Gatsby (2013)
plain and simply annoying
i wish i could say i loved this film as there are many people who i admire involved in it. first of all, bas lurhman, the director, is very talented and an interesting artist to watch. still, most of his movies are terrible, like moulin rouge and Australia, and i guess if you liked those you will probably like this. but for everyone else, stay away. i didn't see this in 3-d so maybe that makes all the difference but the story is bland and so are the characters. toby maguire is miscast and so is almost everyone else. leo was properly cast but so what, the movie was barely watchable. if i had to watch one more music video scene i was going to throw up. the production design is pretty impressive though and i'm guessing they spent a ton of money on it. you can definitely appreciate the film on the basis of it being a well produced movie. but the characters are so annoying it's really hard to root for them. oh well.
Mischief Night (2014)
wow caught me off guard!
i have to admit that i didn't expect much going into this. thought it would just be a cheesy bad night at the movies kind of slasher with lots of gore and ridiculous one-liners. but whoa, this really surprised me. it's an interesting movie and has all kinds of stuff you never expect to see in a horror movie
like good acting! and writing! and camera work! there's lots of twists and surprises and even some decent gore. but it's much more about the characters. the two leads are really good together. and Malcolm McDowell is AMAZING of course! and i love the way they portrayed Halloween, which is my favorite holiday. you should watch it if you're looking for something different and fun.
Godzilla (2014)
so-so overall
i'm a huge Godzilla fan just to get that out of the way. i have been since i was a kid and my father would show me the old Toho movies in our basement. i was so excited when i heard they were doing a new Godzilla, and it would be American, and we could FINALLY have a replacement for that terrible piece of junk they made in the 90s. the trailer came out and it looked pretty good so I couldn't wait. then I went to see it opening night and overall I thought it was just so-so. I was a little disappointed because you barely even saw Godzilla really. there was so much time spent talking about it, and almost seeing it, it was just kind of annoying in the end. when you finally did see Godzilla though it looked great. the effects were pretty good and the destruction was perfect. but I didn't like any of the main actors so much because I didn't believe their performances. oh well. I'm sure there will be a sequel and maybe they will finally 100% get it right the next time!!!
