Living (2022)
No surprises there!
For some reason I thought I'd already seen this film, although I soon realised I hadn't. But it's very familiar, the idea of a person getting a diagnosis and realise they haven't really lived a meaningful life. It's not exactly an original concept, so no stars for that.
You'd expect someone to make some changes, after such a realisation, but nah, he just keeps on working his boring office job. Just a little more passionately, if you can use that word to describe pushing paper. So, it's not what I expected, but considering nothing interesting really happens I wouldn't call it surprising.
And well, then he dies. Sad, sad. No surprises there either.
So, all in all, I'm not sure what the point of this film was. It's very restrained, so not a cathartic tear-jerker. It's not romantic. It's not funny. The only thing it has going for it, are the actors and the atmosphere. The film is kind of pleasing to watch because of the 50s vibe, solid acting and the warmth of some of the main characters, but in the end, kind of meh, wish I'd spent my time differently.
The Power (2023)
Not as great as I'd hoped
I really liked the idea of women getting a new way to defend themselves and thinking about how that might affect society. Unfortunately, you don't get to see any real change in society, it's just a different form of oppression. Also you pretty much only see how it affects two families and a bunch of individuals in a lot of different storylines that don't come together, so I don't really know what to make of it. I also didn't get the whole religious thing of Eve talking to god, I couldn't believe in the story and it felt over the top. The ending was pretty much the moment where I expected the story to pick up and finally get interesting.
