The Whistleblower (2010)
Powerful
Just finished this movie - Powerful. Little known Canadian film. It is about one woman's fight to help girls who have been sold into prostitution. It is hard to watch in places when you see how the girls are treated but it tells a very powerful story and the saddest thing is that it is based on a true story. If you want to watch a well made movie which has some very good actors in and can cope with some sickening scenes (that have to be shown to show how the girls are treated) it is worth watching. I must admit I only watched it because of a small but important part was played by David Hewlett. As a fan I try to watch anything he is in. Sometimes I am surprised by what I watch and this is one of those occasions. This was a dark subject but well told story. I would not say I enjoyed this movie but I was glued to the screen and did not want to miss anything. I would recommend this to anyone with a strong stomach for the few scenes that are harsh but needed to tell the story.
Love Actually (2003)
Fantastic Movie
This is one of my favorite movies.
It is about different relationships, new people getting together, in different ways, you have the ones who have known each other for a while, you have the ones that have just met, you have the ones that have known each other for a short time. It is a movie about getting together whether you be older, middle aged or quite young. Richard Curtis has written and directed a brilliant movie that gives the common man a realization of what is possible in a true love relationship and a movie that shows what can happen in that relationship.
One thing I must stipulate is that some reviewers have queried if the UK is so taken with the Christmas Chart Number One, yes we are. The Number One at Christmas IS a big deal in the UK as it is shown in this movie - don't knock it till you've tried it, is all I can say.
I have said it before I love this movie - it and it's sound track is fantastic - if you like a movie that gives and keeps on giving no matter how many times you watch it, this is the movie for you, I can not tell you how many times I have watched this movie, as I have forgotten, but it is many and every time I add a new facet to this movie. Something I missed before is now there or something I missed in a scene is seen - it's great just watch and enjoy is all I can say

The Penthouse (1989)
You will enjoy this if you like David Hewlett - I did
The basic premise of The Penthouse is that a young man loves a young woman and wants to be with her forever. Unfortunately he's a little nuts. After breaking out of an asylum he tries to see her the usual way by going to her front door but is stopped by multiply doormen so he does things his way.
David Hewlett plays a very convincing madman, and Robin Givens plays a very good frightened woman. The police procedure in this movie seems a little unconventional and the police characters are quite one dimensional. But I found that this did not matter as the two main leads inside the penthouse had depth of character and as these were the only two that really mattered who cares about the rest. I gave this a 6/10 due to the police and other characters being quite predictable.
I must admit that I only watched this movie because I am a David Hewlett fan and wanted to see as much as possible of his work as I consider him a very talented actor.
As this story progressed I started to feel sorry for his character which I think was the intention. So by the time the ending comes you really don't want him to die, which seems inevitable due to the point of madness he has got to and the one dimensional police outside. I won't say if he does or not but this movie was not that easy to get hold of so I will just say if you are a David Hewlett fan and can find this movie - I suggest you watch and enjoy.
The Darkside (1987)
Worth viewing if you are a David Hewlett Fan
This movie is obviously low budget but I did not care. I watched this movie purely on the fact that David Hewlett was in it. He is not a lead character but he does have some nice scenes. His character "Chuckie" does forward the plot - what there is of a plot.
If you are a David Hewlett fan then this movie IS worth watching - he made it when he was nineteen years old, and you can see that he had acquired a certain amount of acting skill even at this young age. He does make a credible drug addict. I would recommend this if you are a David Hewlett fan just so you can see he is not just Rodney McKay from Stargate Atlantis. Other reviewer have said that the other acting is not that good but I found it adequate to watch the movie. Enjoy.
Space Cowboys (2000)
They are the best
I was asked recently if I was left on an island with a DVD player and TV that worked which 4 movies would I take with me. This is one of those movies. You have Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner and Donald Sutherland doing in my option some of their best work. It is about four old guys getting a chance to go up into space when they really should not because of their age. BUT will they? Will they get through the NASA program or will they blow it - my bet is on them doing it but this is a movie so you never know. If they ever ask me as a Vet Tech that they needed my help in space because of some strange animal experiment I would jump at the chance to go into space but I think most people would have a problem with the NASA program as I would. This movie is a good example of what would happen if someone who gets the option to go into space would have to deal with.!!!!
