Arrival (2016)
Sit back and take it all in
This movie blew my mind. All the "good movie" components; good acting, directing, screenplay, visual effects etc, were spot on. But the story, oh the story, was the truly impressive bit. I love a good imagination, and the man who wrote this book has a brilliant one.
It is rare to find a good and original story, especially one that also hits home emotionally. Well done!!
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Important show
The first two seasons are really great, the first one especially so. The themes, acting and story lines are on point.
However, the third and fourth do become a bit of a mess - less of a clear message, more trying for drama. They are worth watching though, solely to get to the series finale - well written and well acted!
Important issues being discussed, in a very honest and daring way. Hopefully more shows follow suit!
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
A parody
This film is trying so hard, it becomes impossible to be taken inn by "the story". Also, there is no story.
How did I just watch 160 minutes of nothing?
Tarantino must be too high on himself, because this comes off as a parody of himself.
(I wish actors of this calibre would pick stories worth telling, imagine the movies that would be made if they did!)
The New Pope (2020)
Art
From the exquisite filming, the rooms, the acting, the writing. This has now spoiled me for any other tv show. I bow down. This is pure art.
Selvportrett (2020)
Must see!
It's hard to describe just how powerful this film is, it sneaks up on you and punches you in the heart.
Lene Marie Fossen was a talented Norwegian photographer who died after fighting anorexia since she was a kid. You can clearly see the person that she was, through her passion and her self reflection in this documentary. The most powerful images and words through the movie are the ones from Lene herself.
The filmmakers didn't try to create a story, they let Lene be herself and followed her lead.
This is a must see for anyone who has a loved one with an eating disorder, a loved one who has been sick for a long time or simply, if you wish to be a better human being.
Cannot recommend this film enough!
Kronjuvelerna (2011)
Utterly Beautiful
I debated whether or not to see this movie, I thought it was a typical Swedish "Nordic Noir" crime drama. It was not. To my surprise this movie completely captivated me.
Trying to explain this movie is difficult. I suspect it's the kind of movie you either love, or you don't. If you appreciate artistic license and a bit of surrealism, like I do, you might thoroughly enjoy this movie. If you need everything to be factual and believable, you probably won't.
It beautifully mixes a rather tragic story with hope and dreams. Some things, characters or views might seem a bit simple or childish, but remember this is a story told through a girl growing up. There's a beauty in that, in the dreams, the beliefs - and the filmmakers capture this in a excellent way. Many movies try to mix surreal with reality, but few gets it right, not to mention executes it with this kind of great imagery. I adore a good bedtime story, and I loved the one this movie uses as a red thread.
It's a warm tale consisting of every emotion known to man. It's not about a certain time period, an agenda or like anything I've seen before. It's a story, about people, about life and about relationships of every kind. It lets you dream, think, relate, escape and wonder.
I thoroughly and utterly adored this movie.
