Quarantine (2008)
I hate zombie movies.
But I loved this one.
I was watching it on my computer and I kept IMing a friend, telling him to hold me. Normally, I don't scare very easily. There are a few "boo" effects (where something pops up/jumps out suddenly), but they weren't the only things that made this scary.
The suspense was amazing - so amazing, at times, I couldn't take it. Near the end of the movie (about fifteen minutes to the end), I had to actually pause it and turn the lights on. The rest of the time, I had my face inches from the screen, mouth agape.
I would recommend watching this if you really want something that'll scare you - or at least entertain you for an hour and a half. Don't pay any attention to the people who give bad reviews of this - they either hate it because it's a remake or scream "unoriginal!!!" because it's z zombie movie where people are trapped in a building.
I only have two real cons on the movie, neither of which should turn you away from it. First off, a lot of the movie was in the dark, making it hard to see at times. When done currently, it adds suspense. When done poorly, it just makes viewers have a hard time seeing what's going on. Secondly, Angela, the main character, got really annoying as the movie wore on. She "lost her marbles," whimpering and shaking and crying. Constantly. The acting was believable, but it was seriously overplayed. It sometimes sounded like she was having sex from the way she was going "Oh, ah. Oh, oh, oh God."
All in all, it was a good movie. Something I'd watch again? Maybe in a few months. Not anytime soon, though. For now, I'm going to sleep with the lights on. All of them. Including my flashlights.
Thr3e (2006)
An excellent movie, despite the reviews
The reviews will lead to believe that this is a bad movie. Maybe you will dislike it. But if you take their opinion alone, you are seriously missing out.
To sum it up quickly, the movie revolves around a guy who is being stalked by a killer. The killer leaves him vague riddles and short time limits to solve them.
The story is a lot more detailed than I can really explain, but it is not confusing to follow. I would like to point out now that this is not a horror movie. If you are looking for blood and gore and nothing else, then move on. But this is definitely a suspense "hold-your-breath" thriller. Because I accidentally read some spoilers before watching the movie, I already knew what was going to happen. But I still sat at the edge of my seat, wide-eyed and excited. This is a psychological thriller to the max.
Yes, this is a movie with Christian undertones, but for those of you who are turned off by that, don't be. Most of the religious blah blah dissipates in the first 10 or 15 minutes. Overall in the movie, I didn't think there was a lot of overdone religion in it - though just a hair less of it would have made the movie better.
As a horror fan and a thriller fan, I think you should really check this movie out. Don't expect gore and blood and you'll love it.
Despite the negative reviews on here, give the movie a chance. You'll thank me.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)
If you look at it in the right way, it's an awesome movie
So, if you're read the other comments, you should know the basic plot by now. A woman decides to interview a rising serial killer and he walks her through the first steps.
If you are a horror/thriller fan, you can appreciate this movie. Leslie (the killer) understands how predictable the people are, down to their very movements during a crisis. Think about all the horror movies you've seen. Woosh, something in the bushes - the girl turns, takes a few steps, and looks. Slam, something makes a noise behind her. She turns around to investigate, then runs off.
This is a very generic scene that is portrayed in 90% of movies, but with some variations, of course. What makes this movie great is that Leslie KNOWS all of this.
The first three quarters of the movie were funny, in my opinion. It is NOT a horror movie or a thriller movie (at least not until the end,) but for horror/gore/thriller fans, this is a movie you really should see. I didn't watch the end (because of a distraction in real life, nothing to do with the movie) but I did catch glimpses of it, and that last scene is really the "suspense/thriller" scene of the movie.
Still, though. While it's not scary, it's a must see.
Hostel (2005)
For those worried about the amount of SEX in the movie
Okay, so this is NOT really a spoiler, perse; I'm just addressing the sex scenes.
Reading the other user comments, I was a bit worried about the amount of sex that would be in here. It's really NOT as bad as it seems. Here is the basic gist of the beginning: Three guys are exploring the countries and are looking to get laid. So they go to a sex club. Here you see the movements of couples in rooms behind white screens (you see their shadows.) The most revealing part in this is a S/M bondage room, but even then, you only see a woman straddling a man in black leather. Then there's a pair of boobs. That's it.
The guys go to this apartment and talk to a guy who will send them to a hostel where there a VERY friendly girls. Meanwhile his two friends (male and female) are stoned and are having sex. As the main characters and the guy talk, you can see the girl on top of the guy in the background for the entire conversation. But basically it's just the two of them, naked, her sitting on him. There's no moaning or frantic gyrations.
The last sex scene is of a guy and a girl in one bed and a guy and a girl in another. The basic action is her taking her top off and him making moaning expressions.
That's really the end of the sex. However, before this last sex scene, the girls invite them to the spa where everyone (the girls) walk around naked. They chat with the boys in the steam room with their tops off. If anything, that makes it LESS sexual. You stop noticing their breasts because they're not paying attention to it, either. I'm guessing this is what nude beaches are like.
If you're in it for the gore/horror, you might as well fast forehead to about 40 minutes into the movie. Really. Nothing, and I do mean NOTHING happens before that.
Dead Above Ground (2002)
It's a spoof without trying to be. I loved it!
Now, I can understand very well why many people would hate this movie. All of the characters either fell face first into their stereotypes or were unrealistic beyond belief. If you go to watch it with no expectations of a great movie, you'll love it.
I personally feel that Josh Hammond would make a really good stage actor, or someone in the live performing arts. As he ranted on in these pointless monologues, a flicker of a true actor popped up every now and then (granted, probably on accident.) Jeff Lucas was the ultimate goth. Hateful, twisted, weird, black clothing, black make up. He even has a black cloak that he wears. To pool parties.
Zara Light, his minion, does not seem to be an important character at first. But she soon emerges as the leader of the gang. The gang is also a stereotypical gang: Even number of boys and girls who are dating each other. The black guy talks with "the most ghetto", the jock is the most hot headed, and his blonde girlfriend is the stupidest.
How does Zara lead this gang? Well, seeing as Jeff Lucas acted like he was possessed - she lead with séances, of course.
Slasher-film wise, it was indeed a slasher flick. I mean, guy in cloak popped up three or so times and killed people with this (incredibly fake) ax. In fact, there was more ax-wielding in the opening credits then anything else.
The worst part was the end. I will never understand why two people must physically try to beat each other up when one is a cop (with a gun) and the other has a big ax. Oh wait, that'd just be too easy.
