February (2015)
Don't listen to the critics this movie is phenomenal
This is amongst my favorite psychological horrors. It is thought provoking, only mildly cliché, brilliantly acted, especially Kiernan's role and above all an absolutely stunning atmosphere of eerie transcedence.
If you liked Antichrist I think you will like this.
The Small Miracle (1973)
If you like Religious Propaganda, this one is still a pass
But if you like religious propaganda and whiny androgynous children who couldn't act to save their Christian souls, you might just rate this a 7.8!
True Detective (2014)
Sublime drama in rapid freefall
It's a good thing this show started season 1 as a shining example of how great television and acting can be because every new episode since Season 1 finale has been circling the bowl of cancellation.
Season 3 is slow, lacks drama, lacks tension, ends like a damn Scooby Doo episode AND THEN after it ends it goes on for 30 more minutes.
The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
For films today it's incredible, for a Coen Bro. Film it's OK
1) Completely stupid name for the movie
2) Terrible Ending
3) One section was actually terrible
4) Why are the Coen Brothers getting stuck on Westerns time and time again...
Other than those 4 things, excellent movie all around.
The Jacket (2005)
Disjointed in a bad way
This is the 5th worst movie I have ever seen behind Lady in the Water, Swimfan, Wolf Creek, and the remake of Funny Games.
The movie is disjointed and jarring but not in a good way. It is built up like there is something you are supposed to figure out or try to understand about what is going on, but the story is actually far less complex than that.
Sound design is god awful. It goes back and forth between Adrien Brody, one of the least inspiring actors of all time, sobbing and whispering sweet nothings to himself and blaring loud cut scenes to what he experiences while in "The Jacket." Think Requiem for a Dream drug use montage... but awful, and very VERY VERY loud.
I did not rate it a 1 because the only way a film can get that rating from me is if I literally have to turn the movie off without finishing it. I was able to sit through this entire movie, though I didn't enjoy it.
Kill List (2011)
*whispers* --thank You-- *whispers*
A lot of people don't like ambiguity in films, they want to be told what to think. For me, especially when I watch a psychological thriller or horror I love to see some unanswered questions at the end. This definitely gives you that, perhaps a bit too much but I still enjoyed the hell out of this movie.
Quality film builds tension from the rising action to the climax and this movie delivers there, hands down. Little oddities are dropped here and there that continued to amplify my piqued interest. The film has a lot of the same beats as "A Serbian Film" and to a lesser extent even a bit of the same old Ultraviolence.
Kingdom Hospital (2004)
Don't subject yourself to this
If Lars Von Trier were dead he'd be rolling in his grave. Instead, in some strange masochistic career move he actually executive produced this garbage.
If you're a fan of other works that Stephen King has a heavy hand in you'll likely love this as it is poorly acted, discombobulated, filled with hokey dialogue and horrendously scored. It takes little more than a few minutes into the pilot episode to know that you're in for a true trainwreck and that's almost exactly how far I made it. I couldn't stand to stomach much more than 15 minutes into the second part of the pilot episode.
It seemed as if they were drawing strong parallels between Riget and Kingdom Hospital and that perhaps the plot would actually be fairly similar. One thing that I did enjoy was how much effort they took in the pilot's opening to create visually similar elements to Riget's opening while creating their own spin on it.
It is truly unfortunate that this was so awful because my mouth was watering to perhaps find out, in the American version, what happened to Mona?
