The Lake (2022– )
8/10
Fun, funny, and lighthearted!
19 June 2022
This is a comfort food watch with an edge. I love that it's not shying away from adult themes and language, but is also very sweet. I also enjoy the diverse cast of characters, and the actors are very believable in their roles. I have LOL'd several times, and I also feel empathy for the characters, even Maisie. Granted, I am 3 episodes in, but I can feel I'm on binge with this one. Another reviewer mentioned Schitt's Creek; if you liked S1 of Schitt's Creek at the time it was released - before it was all the rage, I think you would love The Lake also.

The Emperor's New Clothes

There is no payoff to this series. Good actors, atmosphere, and premise are insufficient to make 7 hour-long episodes worth the investment. As others have accurately stated, at least 5 hours were incredibly overwrought monologuing mixed with obvious outcomes. Perhaps if a viewer had never heard this religious investigation before .... even then, so boring! I did enjoy the Haunting series, but I will now think twice before watching anything else from this creator. Honestly, if I hadn't just gone off the episode ratings and Reddit lauding, I would not have bothered with even this. Pass unless you have 7+ hours to waste!

The Wedding Party (II) (2016)

If you're a Nigerian . . .
26 February 2018
In particular a Nigerian of a certain age (b/w 30-40) who lives elsewhere, but misses certain aspects of Nigeria, this is a really good film. Noted: that's a very narrow category. Look, Nollywood has produced some embarrassing nonsense, but The Wedding Party is something that is actually well-produced and directed. Also, the actors are good and/or appear to be having a good time. Is that a relatively low bar? Perhaps. But, again, consider the demographic and then see if you don't enjoy it.

I hope there's more to come like this from Nollywood.

Electric Dreams (2017–2018)
8/10
Worth it
14 January 2018
I've read several critics' reviews comparing this show to Black Mirror as if it fails in comparison. I don't think that's accurate. Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams is visually, thematically and, most importantly, narratively interesting. What is real or normal? What makes a human? Meanwhile, there are at least 2 episodes from S4 of Black Mirror that don't measure up to what I've seen so far in Electric Dreams, and apparently I've been watching the dud episodes, per critics' reviews.

Does everything need to have some heightened level of abstraction to be interesting? I don't think so; straightforward storytelling with very good actors set in a world that's different than my own that makes me think is good enough for me.

Worth your time.

Waste of Time

Warning: Spoilers
This film has no direction and no heart. It seems absolutely pointless to the viewer. Perhaps the filmmakers had a point of view, but it was never communicated to me as an audience member.

I will be honest and say that I wanted to like it because it was made by a black woman, but there are better black women auteurs than this movie evidences.

It started as shit and, literally, ended as shit.

I would not recommend this (at best student) film to anyone.
