Deux frères (2004)
Two brothers
Two brothers (Jean-Jacques Annaud) From his previous movies we know JJ Annaud loves to make movies about nature, people and history.
Although this is certainly not his best movie, he manages to make people think about what he makes. Here about the steeling of artifacts and killing of wild animals in foreign colonies.
First of all, its a movie about two brother tigers, who s parents are hunted because tigers kill. In this, not really defined place (somewhere India or Bangladesh) they kill people and domestic animals (buffels).
When Aidan McRory (Guy Pearce), who plays a man who steels authentic artifacts from the forests, kills the mother-or father of the two small tigers (not defined), the two brothers are brought to two different places.
At that time the place is controlled by French politicians who have a colony in the region, and one of those high ranked officer s son gets a tiger. The other one is sold to a circus, as a vicious tiger. The first one is making really trouble and is sold to the head of the colony who has several fierce animals in his dungeon.
After a year they are brought together to fight to each-other. But the two brothers recognize each other and wont fight and escape.
In general not bad, but the visual effect could be done a lot better and off course in such sentimental films the script is made for children to understand.
A feel good movie.
Nice movie, but still: 5.5/10
La meglio gioventù (2003)
La meglio gioventu
La meglio gioventu (Marco Tullio Giordana) 2003
A very interesting movie about the life of an Italian family. The movie starts at the year 1966 and goes on until 2003. It s about the family Carati, father, mother, two sons and two daughters.
Before choosing what to do with their lives, the two brothers Carati and there two friends: Carlo Tomassi and Vitale are planning a trip through Europa. But at that moment Matteo gets inspired by Giorgia, a mentally disturbed girl who lives in a center for people with psychological problems, and he wants to help her. From then on, Matteo wont be the same anymore. Although he is quiet bright and studies medicines like Nicola he chooses a different path.
Nicola works in a hospital to help people with psychological problems and helps them back into society. The only two people closest to him he cant really help; his brother Matteo and his wife Giulia.
The film is about 6 hours long and is mostly shown on two DVD s of each 3 hours. Originally made for the television screen in four episodes. The only real thing Marco Tullio Giordino (director) changed was the original music score.
This document is an ultimate collectors item, because its about ordinary life through a couple of centuries and about Italian history.
So u can see the attacks on officials (judges, magistrates, ..) in the eighties and nighties and the communist cells who made Italy look like a war zone from time to time (It begins with student uprizes).
The flooding of Firenze, where Nicola comes to help and Matteo (as a soldier) too. There Nicola meets his future wife, Giulia. Who plays excellent piano. But she is also a member of the communist resistance.
It s nice to see the evolution of people through more than thirty years and their changes. And how the world changes. Quiet a remarkable thing to do and well done by Giordana, who works with actors he worked with before. Almost all the actors knew each other from previous films or from academy. What makes them work like real people in a movie, like it happened within real live.
In this genre of film; La meglio gioventu is from a very good quality and scores a 9/10. Good directing, good acting and an intelligent look on the history of Italy (1966-2003).
Last Days (2005)
Last Days (The last days of Kurt Cobain)
Last Days
The newest film of Gus Van Sant (To die for, Elephant,
). This movie is about the life of Kurt Cobain (Nirvana), played by Michael Pitt. It s typically Van Sant that he makes his movies to let the audience think for themselves. In the movie the names are not the names from the authentic Nirvana crew and its especially about Cobain. His entourage is seen in the film but everything turns around the main character. Van Sant does not use popular actors in most of his films. Last Days is not spectacular but shows quiet good the last days of Cobain, who lives for his music and is for most of the time in his own world where nobody can enter. There are people all the time in his neighborhood and small parties, people calling, but Blake (Cobain-Pitt) is most of the time not really around. Its clear that this hero for lots of young people had the money to buy everything, but at the end only loves his music and hates all the fuss about his popularity. I film u can think over after u have seen it.
7/10
The Island (2005)
The Island
The Island
From the director of The Rock, Bad Boys, Pearl Harbor. Michael Bay likes to make action movies. And he is quiet good in it. The Island is in comparison with most of his other movies more a quiet starter, building up to an action climax at the end. All together not a really fantastic film but it still touches a few warm topics of today, like cloning. Lincoln Six Echo(Ewan Mc Gregor) is living in a city along with other people, it's all inside because they are been told there is some kind of pollution outside and the ones in the complex are the lucky ones, the survivors of a world disaster. In fact are all of these people insurance policies from rich people outside who can use this clones to repair their own body. All of the clones are made in a few years to be an equal of the other living counterpart. They brainwash the clones so they cannot think of other things than mentioned in the brainwash, sex is something they don't know. Lincoln Six Echo (Ewan McGregor) is a product that has difficulties, what means he starts to raise questions, to many questions. He is actually a production error. He meats a girl, Jordan Two Delta (Scarlett Johansson) and together they try to find out the truth of the lottery. The lottery is made to let the people of the complex dream of a future on a one-solitary island where they can go and which is not polluted. In reality they are used at that moment to fix the original buyer of the clones. Quiet an original film with an easy start building up to a full blow action movie at the end, what not really fits in this type of movie. Another chance blown for Michael Bay to make a really good movie, above average.
Platoon (1986)
Platoon
Platoon
A movie by Oliver Stone (1986) with a strong cast. Late sixties, full blown war in Vietnam. Lots of different characters were there in war, and everyone there had his own story and background. It' s nice to see that these characters are very well build by Stone, who plays a very small part in the movie. The stupidness of the war is clear in this movie and no man there, Vietnamese or American is very happy with the situation, it s all politics. The movie starts with new soldier Chris Taylor (Sheen) who comes right into action in a very diverse battalion with sgts Barnes and Grodin (Berrenger and Dafoe), the first a killing machine and the second a man who fights for the goods of the war. The rest are a mixture of mainly poor under developed soldiers who take this chance to fight to escape from daily poverty. From day one they are in the fire-line at the border with Cambodja and the fights are heavy and ruthless. Every day people die and there s hardly a day of rest. The only real leisure time is when they can smoke some dope, to forget reality. Berrenger and Dafoe are constantly in a sort of fight and the Leuitenant is not really man enough to control everything. Soon there are two groups in the camp and this makes them more vulnerable for the enemy. At the end no one could really see the situation clear with a massive slaughter as a result. Chris Taylor is a volunteer in the war, because he wanted to do something for his country, but at the end he feels he could do almost nothing to change the situation.
Oldeuboi (2003)
Old Boy
So many people, so many visions. When I heard Oldboy was said to be one of the best movies of 2004, I was curious. It is always difficult for a movie that blasts some taboos into the theater's to hold on outside of them. Until half the movie I would give it a 7.5, but the final chapter of it makes the jigsaw complete and the it is a 8.5. Then I came to see here, and 8.5 it was as an average of about 8000 viewers. I think I saw around 100 movies, new and old, only this year. And matching old boy to only them, it is a great movie. A movie isn't only great in acting or writing, it is the total concept that takes u. (or not) It is a true vengeance story with, for me, slices of Seven, Kill Bill, other asiamania movies, big brother. An example of a vengeance movie: Abril Despedaçado (Behind the sun) has a 7.6 on 1000 hits and lots of people are going to find this a better movie, but it is a complete different atmosphere and u know what's coming and Oldboy takes u the hardest on the end and that's what people remember most.
¿Qué he hecho YO para merecer esto!! (1984)
A masterpiece of Pedro Almodovar
This is certainly one of Almodovar's best movies. It has more than the average movie and is actually life as it is on many occasions. The thin but very subtle humor in all of his movies and the personages in the movies make him a master director who knows what's going on in life at the moment of making a film. Very much it is story about people living together but don't know each-other. With slices of sex, drugs, addiction, humor he brings you to a thin laugh although most problems in the movie are real problems and aren't to be taken lightly. A film of making choices in life and go further and stand with this choices, and keep on smiling and hoping whatever happens.
