Jane the Virgin (2014)
Well-produced overall
After 7 years, I finally started watching this show because it kept showing up on my Netflix home page. I didn't think I was going to like it since I'm not a romantic fiction person but the true is I binged and finished within 3 weeks. It's especially interesting with its take on Telenovela, sort of an introduction to Latin American culture, which is helpful since I'm learning Spanish. I have enjoyed most of the scenes regardless which character they're of, it's safe to say they did a great job casting, no one seems out of place.
The last 2 season became a little too repetitive and slow for me with the on-and-off relationships between the main characters and bad guy getting captured and escaping, but still managed to finish and felt content with the show.
Cherry (2021)
Tom Holland is a talented actor
First of all, this film has a smooth and calming flow even with topics that are hard to cope with like addiction and war, so kudos to the production team. And the supportive actors are equally good, at no point I feel something is out of balance.
I think this performance really is Tom Holland's biggest breakthrough so far, easily top 3 of his if not; the emotions are so convincing that I tear up multiple times.
Didn't appreciate him much as an actor before this although I did enjoy a few of his films, from now on I would actively follow his work for the very list.
The Bucket List (2007)
Never gets old
This film is what I call the combination of great cast, great direction, and great story. Every time I come across the title, I make sure to sit comfortably and watch it till the end.
The pace was just right, nothing flashy, very down to earth which makes you think about life. The bucket list is such a cool concept but no other films about life has made it so vivid like this one. I can't think of any other pair of actors more fit for this story than Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Salute to them!
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
6.7 is way underrating
It's not fair that a few negative comments drag the average score down, this piece isn't least an 8 if you want to nick pick. I'm hoping an Oscar for Amy Adams for this role, she is brilliant; same for Glenn Close and other main characters. Great story telling techniques, it's addictive although very heavy.
The Umbrella Academy (2019)
Addictive!
Awesome series, can't get enough of it. I binge watch hundreds of series and this is the only one I got annoyed when I've completed all existing episodes. Annoyed, not just disappointed, annoyed.
The soundtrack Is the biggest reason this show is so good, the cast itself is perfect, too, can't imagine anyone to be replaced by another actor.
Story is intense yet smooth, hats off to the comic artist and screen writer, I need the new season ASAP.
The Green Mile (1999)
Still watching, 21 years later
This is one of those movies you'd remember your whole life. Watched it when I was in my teens, every once in a while I would think of it, and thanks to steaming services I'm able to watch it more often now, so I do.
It's a movie with the combination of all Factors in their finest quality; the acting, the script, the editing, the scenes.
I'm normally not crazy about Tom hanks but this is one I highly recommend and love him for.
The New Legends of Monkey (2018)
As a Chinese, I approve
Before I began to watch it, I was in doubt because most of the time western productionS of Chinese or even Asian epics get really cheesy and derive too much from the originals. However, I watched it because my husband guaranteed it'd be fun to watch, and I got addicted.
Yes they did change some factors like story lines and characters, but I quite like it by treating it as an independent story.
I think overall it's got a well-written script and good cast, Kudos to the art team, most importantly, it's funny, a mixture of fantasy and comedy.
Forget about the original, just watch it as a new show, you won't be disappointed.
Skyscraper (2018)
Just like Andreas
I blame the writers, the lines are off time ing and often unnecessary, a waste of a good budget and made it a high school project film.
Sorry, maybe even high school project Would be better.
P.s. too many action scenes with no scientific support whatsoever.
Fear City: New York vs the Mafia (2020)
Great Production
It's a short but sweet true crime docu-series, I enjoyed it a l but would've liked it longer than it is.
The way and place the crew shoot the interviews are the main reason I'm drawn to the show. Even though the people are in their 60's+, decades after what happened, it feels like you're in their time with them right there, like in a time machine.
I wonder though, if the people speaking out in it would get into trouble.
The Old Guard (2020)
Looking forward to a sequel
Enjoyed it a lot, there's classic action chaos, smooth shooting and editing, some humour, and a really well-fitted cast.
I usually play mobile games with movies/tv shows as the background, I concentrated on this one the whole time until the credit scene.
Charlize is impeccable, I can't think of anyone else playing that role after watching her.
I hope they make a series out of it.
Lenox Hill (2020)
Real Life Greys Anatomy
Not as dramatic as GA but just as watchable. Gives you blunt facts straight to the face, an insightful show that leads your to understanding not only what goes behind the curtains (no pun intended) but also inside their head. You'll have a whole lot more respect for health workers after watching it, totally worth binging.
Jo Koy: In His Elements (2020)
Target audience: Filipinos
You'd probably enjoy this show more if you were Filipino.
His intention was good but the show turns out average; when I open a comedy standup title featuring a standup comedian on the cover, I expect a standup comedy, instead, I get a Philippine's Got Talent. The performers are not that exceptional, just regular guys from the street. I respect their talent, but really didn't make any sparkle for this show.
Life of the Party (2018)
Kind of a waste
The story was supposed to be good, and the cast is definitely good, however it just wasn't as entertaining as it could've been. I blame the editing, it just doesn't keep the momentum going, sometimes you can feel a funny note coming but it drags too long so you lose anticipation.
Also they rely on Melissa too much for most of the scenes, they lose a lot of sparkles interactions with other actors could've created, I feel the whole movie I was watching one person doing and saying things, other people didn't really have to exist.
I started watching it at lunch, went back to working, and finished it at dinner, it didn't stay in my mind between the meals or after I finished it. Good time killer but not something I'd watch again.
Bright (2017)
Well made artificial racism metaphor
Using different creatures - elves, humans, and orcs - to represent races in real life, and portraits the struggles and discriminations perfectly. Wouldn't have been that great if the characters were just "human beings".
Very enjoyable, and reflects reality.
Beauty and the Beast (2012)
Good story, bad acting skills
the idea of this story is good, and i can imagine it to be 100 times better all in all, the director and script writer screw up as much as I like Kristin, it's kind of painful to watch, like everyone in this show is junior... the British doc - not good looking, no personality, bad acting Vincent - don't even know where to start Heather - total a dumb girl Joe - is he even on this show? script writer - are you serious? some of the moments are life or death and you still have the characters do or say stupid things to waste time... only Tess and JT are good but that just makes them incompatible with others
gosh!
