Adam Ruins Everything (2015)
VERY entertaining and informative
I love this show not only because its entertaining but because it does what I think a lot of people and shows are afraid to do: debunk social norms and show the insanity to where a lot of our American customs originated. If you see anything negative about this show its because someone was offended by something they discussed on the show and explained how silly the practice of that particular belief was/is. For example: The show explains how we've been brainwashed as a society/culture to believe diamonds are the greatest way to show a woman you love but in fact they are "intrinsically worthless".
This show teaches people to ask themselves: "why do we do this? who started this custom and why is it social norm now?" Its truly fascinating. Its well worth the watch. The host/show backs up all his facts by displaying source on the screen so that you may look into it yourself.
The host comes off a little condescending at first but if you think about it its almost impossible to explain something to someone when they thought they knew "how" "why" & "where/when" in the first place. I am more than happy to admit that I did NOT know most of the things they teach on the show! That is why I love watching though....I just keep learning so much and you will too!!!
Exposed (2016)
Just awful on SOOO many levels
Where do I begin? Well, another reviewer stated that they felt like they were watching TWO totally different movies that had nothing to do with each other and it gets tiresome and stretched out because the movie doesn't tell you what they had to do with each other till the very end. I literally felt like I was watching a subtitled Spanish movie about religious people and a completely different movie about detectives/ law enforcement and gangs.
And even then the movie jumps around to much. They spend time explaining weird things that don't really help the flow of the movie and skim over the important stuff like when people die... I turned around and asked my boyfriend "what just happened?" or "how did they die?" too man times to enjoy the movie. And don't get me wrong I am a huge movie geek! I understand subtlety and subtext and I love a movie that makes me feel a genuine emotion... but the only emotion I got from this movie is CONFUSION!
Even when you do get to the end of the movie the explanation for whats been happening is not enough of a "payoff" (if you know what I mean) ....its feels like "I've watching this weird ass movie till the end to find out what these two stories have to do with each other and this is IT!??!?!?" And the truly weird thing to me was Keanu's horrible acting in this. I know he's been accused of being "too wooden" in his performances but this was just hard to watch. There is a scene with him getting frustrated at himself for being a bad father where he screams and hits himself...the acting was so bad I was laughing.
If the movie would've just stuck with Keanu and the gangs (especially that gang leader "Black"??) and worked on why Rocky went to jail/prison and why it would've been much better. In the end they don't even get into why the dead detective was the way he was and why. And why didn't his wife do anything about it if she knew the horrible things he was doing on a regular basis?
The ONLY reason I am giving this movie TWO stars instead of ONE is because I like the costumes on the "visions" she was seeing (they reminded me of Jim Henson-ish type stuff) but that in itself seemed so out of place and weird in this movie.
I was sitting there and saying to myself WTF is going on?
You've been warned!
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005)
Some people need to relax!!!!
this show is freaking hilarious!!!! i love all the characters individually and LOVE it when they play with the line between offensive and acceptable....and then spit on that line and dance on it!!!!
so either you "get" this show or you don't but my theory is the people who don't "get" this show are people who take $h*t too seriously!
Oh and did i mention i am a woman and i LOVE this show!?!??! (saw a few reviews that peeved me... they hated the show and said all the good reviews must be from men who are idiots....)
oh did i mention i love this show!?!?!
fyi some of my fave episodes are : Dennis and Dee go on Welfare; The Gang Finds a Dumpster Baby; Sweet Dee's dating a Retarded Person; Mac and Dennis: manhunters; and my absolute fave: THE NIGHTMAN COMETH!!!!!
Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)
Zombie movie done slapstick comedy style
First of all i must warn you if you don't "get" teenage humor (stupid puns, typical horny teen boy stuff, and jokes that take no real set up, effort or brains) then you won't l like this movie. Its zombie movie and slap stick comedy pretty much made into one movie.
I've seen A LOT of zombie movies...some of my faves are: Original "Dawn of The Dead", "Day of The Dead" and "Zombieland"
after reading some reviews and comments i felt i had to write this review. don't expect a deep and thoughtful zombie movie (its JUST a ZOMBIE movie people). Its your typical "zombie movie formula" Teen boys...couple hot chicks....outbreak in a lab somewhere...surviving and trying to get out of town before it blows up for containment. But there is some pretty creative zombie kills and most of the slap stick comedy jokes made me laugh (even though some of them were incredibly stupid....) you just can't expect to take anything seriously in this movie.
Oh and if you liked the whole zombie strippers thing then please watch ZOMBIE STRIPPERS 2008 w Robert Englund (yep, the guy that plays freddy krueger!!!) That movie is hil-air-iuous!!!!!
bottom line is if you like to laugh AND like zombie movies then this is worth watching (at least once)
400 Days (2015)
Good psychological thriller bad direction overall
after watching this movie and reading almost all the user reviews i get why they're so mad.... the movie had a lot of potential but it kinda goes in a weird misleading direction. and don't get me wrong i love a great ambiguous ending but i was a little irritated it didn't "tease" more in one direction or the other.
i did however think this movie was worth watching. it has a very interesting concept (400 days in isolation is a lot for the human mind to take) i have always been interested in things like "cabin fever" phenomenon where a man living alone for months in Alaska goes on a killing rampage because of a break in his psyche. (this has happened many times IRL BTW)
so if your into psychological experiments and the outcomes are interesting to you give this movie a watch if you have time.
The Truth About Emanuel (2013)
Beautiful film about death and loss
I loved this movie! It's beautifully shot, wonderfully acted, and has a complex and existential meaning throughout.
This movie is about death, loss, letting go and the uniqueness of a mothers love.
Its about an odd teenage girl. You immediately get the sense that something is off, as she's narrating to you that she feels as though she's killed her mother during birth. It immediately strikes a deep level of sadness within you to imagine growing up without a mother....without her touch, without her holding you as a baby and singing to you, holding to her to her breast and making you feel safe and secure. And you see that level of sadness that she carries around like a burden. She narrates that she feels she's being punished for "killing her mother".
The girl is incredibly smart and imaginative. Which I enjoyed. She may be a bit of a snarky teenager but who could blame her in her circumstances.
Jessica B. aka Linda does a really good job being the symbol for that eternally warm motherly feel. The way she dotes on her baby and projects a level of love that is only kind of love a mother could give.... you understand the longing Emanuel has for being the object of that love.
Water continually shows up in this film and it does for a reason. After reading some comments and reviews on IMDb I find that a lot of people didn't understand that the water in the movie symbolized to be the medium that is between birth (life beginning) and death (life ending). There is a deeply moving scene where Emanuel cradles the "baby" in her arms and lays in the fetal position until water completely consumes her. She is not panicked and can breathe just as her mother described to her father about a dream she had right before she gave birth to Emanuel.
I also noticed that there is kind of a mirrored scenario between Emanuel and Linda. Emanuel lost her mother when she was a baby and Linda lost her baby. There is a part in the movie when she asks her father a profound question echoed throughout the movie of "did you ever wonder what it would've been like if I died and mom lived?" And you see exactly what would've happened through Linda.
I loved the resolution in the film. And I am not ashamed to admit I was crying like a baby at the end. They both have a cathartic moment of acceptance of their circumstances. And I for one thought it was a brilliant ending to bury the baby at the site of her mothers grave giving her mother the gift of taking care of that baby eternally. And in doing this Emanuel finds her meaning and the reason she lived.... to help this loving mother to deal with the grief of losing her only baby and in doing so she accepted that her mother is in a place of love and peace ( i.e. the water/death).
I have never seen a movie deal with death a resolution quite like this one has and affect me so deeply.
I recommend to anyone who struggles to understand the existential meaning of life and death. And the profound feeling of sadness one feels with the loss of a loved one.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!!!!!!!
Snowpiercer (2013)
Wasn't nearly as good as I thought it would be
I love action/sci-fi/post apocalyptic movies and I was very disappointed by this movie because it was not as good as I thought it was going to be. The storyline is okay. The director took a different approach with the action sequences and I didn't like it and it just didn't translate well to me .....the viewer. I understand cinematography wise what he was trying to do but the shots were off and the point of view was strange. The lead actor Chris Evans is awesome though so if you like him that's a good reason to go see it.
And I will say something in the defense of this movie I had just got just got done seeing The Edge of Tomorrow with Tom Cruise because it was a double feature day in my favorite theater and the edge tomorrow was so good compared to the snow piercer it's probably not fair to snow piercer I just saw a movie like to be at you tomorrow before it so that's probably one of the reasons why I didn't like the snow piercer as much as I probably would have normally. (Sorry about this paragraph being wonky....I dictated it and it's hard for me to go back and manually make corrections)
Hope my review helps some of y'all's!!! happy viewing fellow movie nerds!!!! :-)
