Repeaters (2010)
sucked me right in..
This was great.. a good idea adapted well. Engaging performances from all concerned, good pace and character development. I really can't fault it in any way. I was completely drawn in, only "surfacing" from the film occasionally to enjoy how much I was enjoying the film. The soundtrack/score was fantastic, mellow and emotive, which for me is a huge part of a film. had it been a rock/punk soundtrack I might not have enjoyed it as much and yet somehow I would have expected that to be the choice.. I think the trailer tried to emphasize the excitement, but there was much more to the film. Something about it reminds me of Rivers Edge (1986), but not sure why. If I could find a film like this once a week I'd be in heaven.
Bloodsport (1988)
Pure Cheese, avoid like the plague, swine flu, and ugly fat chicks!
If you want to watch poorly choreographed fight scenes, terrible acting, with even worse dialogue, and some of the dumbest slow motion scenes showing Van Damme looking like he has a mental handicap, rather than suffering from temporary blindness, than this film is for you.
Perhaps I was missing something when I made the mistake of killing some time recently and watching it when it was on TV, but unless you have ADD or a very low IQ, i'd steer away from this movie, unless you are going to watch it with the view to laughing your ass off at just how bad it is.
For the record, i'm not some JCVD hater, if ya take most of his films for what they are, they are OK, Universal Soldier and TimeCop were entertaining enough, and I don't deny they guy makes kickin people in the face look awesome! But this was just pure cheese as stated in my summary.
If you want some old school martial arts movies, stick to Bruce Lee ones, or if you must Chuck Norris, as they just do a much better job of it.
Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003)
One of the cheesiest films i've ever had the misfortune of seeing....
El Mariachi was pretty good in it's day, even if it was a bit cheesy and far fetched, Desperado took the borders of reality a few steps over the line, this film however can't even see the line it's that far passed it! I'm amazed and shocked that Depp agreed to do this role, i know he likes to take some odd roles, but this is just insane.
If the movie was billed as a comedy, it would have achieved it's purpose perfectly, but to class it as a thriller? My advice, is take this film with a pinch of salt, don't expect too much, and hopefully you wont be too disappointed. Alternatively, just don't watch it at all, and spare your eyeballs, ears and brain a lot of suffering.
Alex in Wonderland (1970)
great slice of a life...
I really liked this slice of California in the 70's (late 60's?) Donald Sutherland rules. plain and simple.. his charisma would carry a film even if it were not so well put together as this one... his character is likable but realistic, faults included.. whatever.. I just wanted to recommend the film.. I like a film to set a mood and take you there.. and this does just that, i feel like I know what it would be like to be a director on the verge of having it all in the early 70's, and for an hour and a half I lived it with the cast..
I felt like the mood was similar to that of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", at the beginning, just watching Richard Drefuss's character with his family.. just like a glimpse of what that life would be.. with the good times, and the arguments etc etc.. no explosions, no car chases, just a slice of life.
Hey DJ (2003)
Aaaaaagh, what the hell???
This film was horrible... I really don't get it at all, why the raving about it?? what am I missing?? It's not like I'm an Action film fan or anything, I go Art-house over Hollywood 6 days outa 7, but this... Christ it was Garbage... The music was cool, yes, for now.. give it two years and it will sound terrible.. its just the nature of Dance music to do so... There was no acting and there was no plot.. Loser with no musical talent wants to be DJ, and somehow gets to sit down with a handful of A-list Dj's for beers and advice... There was no flow, just jumping from inexplicable encounter to inexplicable encounter, the Acting throughout was sub par for student work.. and the dialogue seemed to be all impromptu
SPOILER- At one point our main character is auditioning for a DJ spot at a club (looks like the Space Terrace Ibiza, but might be anywhere..) he plays an Elvis record... no beats layed on top.., no remix J-XL style just an old Elvis record.. and rather than boot his lame ass onto the street the promoter tells him he'll give him another try, but he's gotta update his style????? WTF
Garbage.. Avoid like the goddamn plague.
