Hackers (1995)
Brilliance in realism
I don't give a 10 for much. This film however has stood out for years. Even today it is technologically relevant. It has a realism that eludes most technological thrillers and an aire of success, again, unrivalled by successors. Whether it be Johnny Lee Miller's charm and wit, or Angelina Jolies curves and sex appeal, this film has it going on. In short this is brilliance.
I can talk of computer as i am too a Linux Hack. I see the reality. For me this film has so much to offer. I cant find it fault. The great soundtrack has lasted as one of the most downloaded to this day. This is an iconic film that is a showcase of technology. Nothing since has been so advanced in reality, sensuality, and thrills. The film has a plot, and it is good. I have not seen such originality in acting and plot lines since WAr of the World (1954). I put this in the same league.
The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Slick, decent little thriller, with very good aspects
A decent little earner grossing over 240million dollars from just 20 odd thousand dollars invested. It twists and turns with suspense built up throughout. You feel little sympathy towards the characters plight however as they seem to create their own demise. For example Mike throws the map into the river, Heather gets them lost constantly, and they don't even follow basic survival techniques despite the book Heather brought with her which must have included sections on compass readings and possible reasons for it leading them in a circle. It would have said follow the river!! Leads away from the source which is in the Forest! Obvious!! Despite the above let downs, this film has got some serious good points. As a horror fan i like to see a good plot, a decent believable cast and a solid scare. This film delivers an original plot that has intrigue surrounding it from the get go. The cast are very believable as you see their true reactions, partly due to the filming and production techniques of withholding food etc!! And lastly this has the scare is amazing. You never see the force behind the scariness. You never see the people behind the children's voices. You never even see the witch or anything!! A great idea.
I would recommend this film to all newcomers. When you see this film you will find yourself waiting until the end of the credits to see if it actually was true as it looks so real. To this day people still believe this film is real!! It isn't people but hey amazing as it is!! Slick and cool, very decent addition to a horror collection.
Wedding Crashers (2005)
Unbelievably funny
What a funny film. It had it all and i found it great. The cast works perfectly and with a lot (and i mean a lot) of laughs scattered through a gloriously original plot.
It has it all and the actors do so well with each other. With so much comedy the film surely had to have its downside?? Nope it was all there from start to a very cool finish. Not giving it away but the church scene is fantastic!! a must see for all comedy fans, and also for grumpy sods who need a laugh. Oh and the grandmother is sooooooo funny!!
I have said that this film is funny, and that does not do the film any justice at all. I marvel at its ingenious original plot and how the film makers have played it our. The characters are great and the ending gives all the just deserts you want without being crazy. I found the whole film to be amazing and i will buy and watch it over and over again.
I you like comedy you'll love this film!! A must see for 2005. Best film ever!!
Darkness Falls (2003)
Good film with scary moments but lacked thrill
The film has great graphics and a good plot, but that is where it ends. It has cheap thrills and trys to shock way too much. whilst this film is on the face scary, the layers don't gel and i found myself wondering how we went from such a good plot to such crazy action. it doesn't suit the film and it would have been better played out if the shocks had been left out and the filmmakers had played on the "stay in the light" thing more and showed a scarier being.
overall it has plaudits but i remain reticent about giving it higher ratings and it clearly didn't thrill and scare that much to have a rating of 4.5/10!!
The Grudge (2004)
Excellent thrill ride with great visuals
I found this film to be very, very, very good. It had all the right ingredients i have come to expect from the director. It was unbelievably good.
This film was truly scary and when being watched at 4am in Halls of Residence (noisy and clunky) the mood was just right. As for what the film provided it was magnificent. It showed just enough to scare the living bits out of you whilst still not giving any of the ending away.
Unfortunately this is where it went wrong. I gave the film 9 because, despite being in my top 3 scariest films ever, the ending lacked the final push that has been the trademark of the director in films like The Ring. The ending was a disappointment but the fear by this point was so great that it was still truly magnificent.
With such a great set of visuals and an amazing plot, this film takes you through the scariest ride of your live and leaves you checking your underwear for treadmarks. This film has it all and is one for keeps in my collection.
Two Hands (1999)
Remarkably, entertaining film
It was late at night and i was channel hopping when BBC2 showed this film. I saw it from the very beginning and kept thinking oh i will stop now and go to bed. This film was engaging and surprisingly dark in humour. I think that unlike some peoples comments, this film has the unique dark humour aspect and unrealistic scenario that makes it impossible for people to think that this can really happen. It is a feel good humorous film where the out-of-luck Ledger wins the girl and the wronged get revenge. This is no more different from Westerns where the bad guys get killed by the good guy who drifts into the night with his girl. This was truly good and i endeavor to add this to my large collection of films shortly. I loved it. It was a remarkably, entertaining film.
