Ricky Stanicky (2024)
Fun light popcorn movie
It's a fun movie to watch with your girlfriend on a Saturday night. Even though is not memorable, John Cena steals the show. He's got great timing and delivery. I always thought his comedic work wasn't the best, but he proved me wrong this time. The guy can do comedy, and very very well.
The key here is low expectations. I'm a huge Bill Macy fan from this work on Shameless. Also, Zac Efron has been doing some great work, specially with Iron Claw. I imagine some people might be disappointed by these roles they picked, but again, low expectations is key. This is the John Cena show, and he excels at that, while the rest of the cast work as a platform for him to shine.
Don't take it too seriously, just enjoy it for what it is .
The Covenant (2023)
Fantastic film.
What can I say that other comments haven't said already? The movie was fantastic. It's grounded and full of heart and soul. Both Gyllenhaal and the actor playing Ahmed were tremendous, but it's the latter who steals the show. His portrayal of the character makes him compelling with very few lines, and his performance was stellar.
The director manages to keep you at the edge of your seat in all 3 acts. The action sequences were fantastic, but they feel more grounded than a standard American military movie that puts Americans vs the Taliban in gun fights. Starr, Ludwig and Miller have great secondary roles, even though they don't get much camera time.
Cinematography and music are award worthy.
Great film overall.
Twisted Metal (2023)
Extremely fun Action Comedy
Even though it has several action sequences, it's a comedy at heart and itdoesn't take itself very seriously, making it very enjoyable and fun to watch. Do not expect a masterful plot, this is a light-hearted action comedy.
Mackie's comedy chops were a pleasent surprise, specially considering I do not like his drama work. I found his latest work (Altered Carbon, Black Mirror, Captain America) flat and unispired, specially considering that in two out of those 3 he replaced someone else who was doing a much better job.
Stephanie Beatriz is an extremely underrated actress who can do Drama and Comedy flawlessy (as seen in Brooklyn 99), even switching from one to the other within one scene and complety nailing it.
My favorite two characters were Stu and Sweet Tooth, but it's the latter that steals the show. The best part is that he looks like a psycho brick house but has Will Arnett's comedy chops, which is a killer combo. Every time he's on screen he just wins.
The plot is simple and effective. Comedy is great, action sequences are truly fantastic and so much fun to watch. Also the 30 min episode duration makes it a fun ride that doesn't drag too long.
The Chosen One (2023)
Close but no cigar.
Millar's original core idea remains (it's one of my favorite books of his) but execution is all over the place.
Some performances are very weak, but it's understandable given how weird dialog and pacing are. Some dialog feels very unnatural and forced. Like the writer is trying to make a point as fast as possible instead of making characters get to the point by talking to each other like actual human beings. It feels rushed, desperate to get to a point not minding HOW it gets there.
Even though is poorly written, premise is captivating enough to get you attention, but that's all Millar, not the show-runners. Some characters are very likable (Tuka, Wagner), but other are very cartoon-y (pretty much every antagonist)
Cinematography is great.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
Very good meta bromance comedy
I went in not expecting much. Nicolas Cage has made very questionable choices regarding what movies he works in, so my hopes were low. Kinda expected a cheesy Charlie Kaufman-esque movie with a little Birdman kind of nostalgia. Also, I find Pascal a good actor, but not a great one.
I'm so glad I was wrong.
Basically this is a heart-warming bromance meta comedy that nails most of its jokes and doesn't take itself too serious, which makes it even better.
It goes meta in the way a 'Community' episode goes meta, in a very non-pretentious, comedy-driven way that entertains like hell. The level of absurdity of some scenes/situations is simply perfect, it's never too dumb or farteched that it stops being funny.
Pascal's performance is simply fantastic and he manages to shine in a cast that works perfectly. Cage's portrayal of a very narcissistic and oblivious version of himself is great.
Free Guy (2021)
Fantastic popcorn movie.
I went in with extremely low expectations considering how 'meh' the last few Ryan Reynolds' movie were.
It turned to be a very entertaining, funny and heart-warming movie.
Reynolds, Comer and Waititi are great. The chemistry between Guy and Millie is great. The CGI is fantastic and so fun to watch. Usually I don't like cameos for cheap reactions, but I liked the couple ones the movie had. Characters have motivations that make the plot compelling and interesting.
Even though it has a few plot issues and cliches, the movie accomplishes being very good within its genre, which is a Saturday night popcorn movie that most people could enjoy. It's so rewarding to go in expecting nothing and come out having enjoyed the film. After all, entertainment is the goal here.
Black Adam (2022)
Wasted potential, absurdly generic.
The most generic super hero movie I've seen in a while. No character development whatsoever. Generic heroes, generic villains and a total wasted opportunity with the "anti-hero who walks a thin line" thing.
People seem to forget that heroes and villains are supposed to be people with real motivations and personalities, interesting characters we can relate to, not super-powered dummies who do everything the plot requires them to. In this case, the plot defines the characters and it should be the other way around.
Also, so many plot holes and dumb situations. How was the crown so easily accesible but the bad guys never found it?
As many of the latest Marvel movies, it feels like it was either written by kids or in a hurry. So many cliches and bad writing. The plot tries to force you to care for some characters, but it fails miseraby. I would not be surprised if comicbook fans hate it. Characters get so much better treatment and waaay better plots in comic books.
Pierce Brosnan shines, but not enough to save the film nor the flatness of his team and its members. I'm a huge JSA fan, but this version was painfully forgettable and boring, specially the young ones.
Hopefully James Gunn will stop doing these generic superhero movies and move to more interesting topics and good character development.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Awful
So... Most characters are awful cliches and very annoying ones at that. The worst is the reporter and her very exaggerated facial expressions.
So, pretty much every rich person in this story is dumb and shallow, BUT that Hotel Girl is the awesomest person in the whole world for no reason. Her characters adds nothing and wastes so much screen time trying to prove to us how magnificent she is.
Even though it's the story of a very dangerous criminal with no redeeming qualities whatsoever who happens to be a woman, somehow the writers try to make this about gender and how "women are overlooked" like it justifies Anna's actions or maybe it's just a lame attempt to force us to empathize with a main characters that is as charismatic as a wall.
Also, it's not good enough to be that long.
