Nyad (2023)
Impossible does not exist
It's interesting that this film completely escaped my attention until now. A dear friend of mine suggested I watch it, and it was a perfect choice; I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It tells a truly inspiring story, a joy to watch. I love stories that demonstrate how human fixed thinking can indeed be overcome! The plot is set: our protagonist must swim a tremendous distance under harsh conditions, deemed impossible by experts, something a human supposedly cannot achieve. She doesn't succeed at first, nor the second time, only after numerous attempts. The main character refuses to give up, fights, and tries again and again until finally reaching her goal, becoming a part of history. She proves that the impossible does not exist. The lead actors shine. Foster and Bening delivered a brilliant performance, deserving of their Oscar nominations. The locations are stunning; as you watch the film, you can almost feel the salty air.
Overall, it's a truly great piece of work, I recommend it to everyone; it's worth watching.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Komm, gib mir deine Hand
I first saw this film in theaters years ago, and I truely enjoyed it. Waititi plays a strange game with the audience. Initially, you think this film is some sort of quirky, morbid comedy, but as the plot progresses, you realize it's actually a hard-hitting drama. It's a drama where we can see the absurdity of dictatorship through a child's eyes, its brutal functioning, fanaticism, agony, and inevitable downfall. Waititi plays with the audience. One moment you're giggling at some absurd joke, the next moment you're struck by a shocking scene. There are very strong shifts in the film that suddenly hit the viewer. In my opinion, this is where the magic of the film lies. I left the theater somewhat shocked, but it was the kind of shock that's worth it.
The casting of the film is superb. The actors truly gave their best. Rockwell as the disgraced military officer, Johansson as the loving, anti-establishment mother, Waititi as Hitler, Griffin Davis and McKenzie as the child victims of war and dictatorship, Wilson as the fanatical lunatic - they all guarantee success. And the film indeed became a success. It deserves every bit of it.
For those who haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it. It's a typical rewatchable film, always an enriching experience.
Nothing But Trouble (1991)
Long live Judge Valkenheiser!
It's my belief that everyone has at least one film they genuinely love, despite objectively acknowledging its absurdity. For me, this is that film.
It's challenging to determine why I love this movie. I can rewatch it anytime, have laughs without needing any alcohol. I feel like this is the film that, at the time, no one took seriously. The creators, the main cast, the entire crew seemed to think, "We don't need a well-written script, let's just throw together 90 minutes of nonsense, and something will come out of it." It worked! At least in my case.
The mad judge, the train shooting cucumbers at the dinner table, the innovative execution device (a roller coaster), the rural sheriff waving a machine gun, the peculiar interpretation of laws - each one is genius. Original ideas.
This film was a massive flop back in the day. I understand why and yet don't. It's a typical example of something being so bad that it's good! Of course, all of this is my highly subjective opinion, and I'm sure the majority wouldn't agree with me.
Ultimately, this film's quirky charm lies in its absurdity, making it a cinematic oddity that, holds a unique place in my heart.
On a volé la cuisse de Jupiter (1980)
A French gem from the eighties
It's my childhood favorite film, one that I happily revisit as an adult anytime. A typical French comedy, yet it stands out. Perhaps it's the beautiful Greek landscape that makes it unique.
I love the first part, but the sequel a bit more. It has some silliness, but I believe that's inherent in French films from that era. It wouldn't be a French comedy if the characters didn't feel compelled to scream at each other at the most unexpected moments. That's why we love these films.
One thing is certain. The story is simple, yet magnificent. The film is humorous, with dialogues that often make you laugh and cry at the same time. Unfortunately, I don't speak a word of French, so I can't watch it in the original language, but the voice actors really did a great job at the time.
The main characters are lovable, and the characterizations are really well done. And, of course, the beauty of the Greek land. All of this resulted in a truly good film.
In the end, this film is a perfect blend of French wit, timeless humor, and the stunning Greek scenery, making it a cinematic gem that ages like fine wine.
The Holdovers (2023)
My new favorite Christmas movie
It's hard to say how much I enjoyed this movie. A brilliant work of its kind.
I'm not a big fan of Christmas movies. Most of it is trite, clichéd and kitschy. This movie is an exception.
The character development the protagonist goes through gives hope!
Hope that even a burned out, lost soul is capable of hopeful things. That he is able to love and do good in his own way. Paul Giamatti is a great actor, I sincerely hope he can turn the academy nomination into an award. He would deserve it.
At least that much I hope that Da'Vine Joy Randolph will also pocket the Oscar. Brilliant acting. The stoic mother, who has suffered a huge loss, still lives her life like a rock, but she cracks from time to time. I loved it!
Dominic Sessa's performance is also excellent. A great debut and I hope we see many more such gems from him.
In our fast-paced, hectic world, it's hard to switch off. Lately, I've been noticing that I'm not really doing well either, and I not capable to watch a movie all the way through. Hovewer this movie managed to hold my attention and I loved every minute of it, for which I'm really grateful.
A very nice story, in a brilliant film that you must see! And it doesn't even have to be Christmas!
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (2023)
Watch the first film, don't watch the rest!
I liked the first part, the second one not so much, but this third one, it's a devastating failure. I admit, I was happy when I found out that a sequel was being prepared, and for some reason I thought they would be able to bring back the quality of the first part. These hopes soon disappeared. Unfortunately, it was immediately clear from the trailer that this film will not be able to deliver what I expected. Nevertheless, I watched the movie. 90 minutes wasted the movie was unpleasant to watch. I often wondered if anyone from the crew was serious about this? Did no one really notice during the making of the film that this direction is not good, that the story is childish, and that the characters are obviously bored with it all? Mehh...
This is another missed opportunity. Sad...
