Luck (2022)
Easy film to follow and enjoy.
The story is different, the animation is high quality and the sound/voice is great. What this movie lacks is memorable music. Other than that it's worth a watch when you want light hearted fun. Job well done Skydance.
Dark Waters (2019)
Standing up for the little guy never felt so good
It's a tragedy knowing this actually happens in the real world but it does and it's hard to make it right except turn it into a film and hope for the best. If you like underdog stories especially against large and powerful corporations then you'll want to donate your time to watch Dark Waters. Mr. Ruffalo's performance is a bonus here so enjoy the show.
Note: John Grisham's The Rainmaker without Mr. DeVito
Alien: Covenant (2017)
Weaker than Alien: Prometheus
The lore is somewhat there in the film but it's hard to believe such highly skilled individuals have no sense of risk management or have simply forgotten their training resorting in decision making normally reserved for juvenile delinquents. It gets a pass because of the visually stunning effects :(
Prometheus (2012)
Alien: Prometheus
As with all Alien movies it's full of gore and dark atmosphere so if that's your flavour then have at it. It's not a bad movie but would suggest waiting to watch until the prequels have caught up to 1979's Alien, also directed by Ridley Scott. If you haven't seen any of the Alien films then start with the one just mentioned. Outstanding visual effects.
I would watch this again if it's already playing in the background.
Northern Soul (2014)
Northern Soul has soul
Any attempt to make a film about a cultural movement is challenging especially if it centers around a few characters because there could be a vast number of experiences/perspectives on the matter but not enough time to cover it all however Northern Soul does try to please everyone. The first half is more about discovery of soul music and how it can give people (all races) meaning in life, sense of community, or an addiction which music is capable of doing. The montage of record hunting, practicing routines and comradery was pleasant to watch. The second half is more or less about suffering and the existence of drugs in the scene so the film takes a more personal tone since the characters are the focal point.
If you're generally interested in music, culture or the 70's Northern Soul might be worth a watch.
Into the Woods (2014)
I knew nothing about Into the Woods before I watched
Met up with some friends and thought "Alright, time to get spooked" later I was told that it was a musical. It threw me off at first but I figured it may be a cheap laugh and since it's backed by Disney I gave it a chance. The whole concept is done nicely but there was some stuff that didn't fit like Disney's attempt at sexual innuendo and Rapunzel singing talents. The Prince duet/bromance actually gave the audience a second wind because some were falling asleep midway which was funny in itself. The songs are catchy and memorable so I can imagine kids eating this up and there's enough content for adults to enjoy but I don't find this being a Disney classic. I have no clue about some of the cast members, they're decent. Special effects are mediocre since the attention is on music and costumes. There's no real story as everything is intertwined though song. Watching a film with an opened mind can make it more enjoyable but it takes some lightheartedness to really enjoy Into the Woods.
On Any Sunday (1971)
A joy to watch!
Not having the chance to ride a motorcycle/bicycle shouldn't discourage anyone from watching this documentary. All walks of life can enjoy watching this as it just explains the joy of riding without all the technical jargon. The fun of doing any activity share the same principles so at the very least if you have a passion in life you can relate to this documentary. If your actively riding a motorcycle/bicycle then you'll definitely appreciate and possibly find new perspective on why people are attracted to riding. The main goal of this documentary is to gain appreciation of different types of riding styles and have a laugh watching.
Notes:
If you're into more racing or technical videos try Faster/Fastest, Twist of the Wrist or The Unrideables.
Predator (1987)
Classic Arnold
If your going to see an Arnold film you should know what to expect. Arnold is the star of the show so all other characters are secondary to him flexing and busting out one-liners, you've been warned. Predator is considered a classic action film for a reason.
Notes:
If not titled Predator this movie should be dubbed the following: Supreme Boy Scout, Gun Vs Parrot Gun and Get to the Choppa! I like how the credit roll gives Kevin Peter Hall proper recognition.
Gravity (2013)
Big budget visuals
Good:
- CGI
Bad:
- Bullock and Coolney have better performances in movies with less budgets.
- very limited character development.
- emphasis on emotion not science.
The CGI and cinematography are amazing in this film but if you're hoping to learn something scientific a documentary will more than suffice as this film throws logic out the window. Did I mention how good the CGI is? The sad truth is that the visuals are so amazing that it overshadows everything in hopes to compensate for the limited writing and scientific logic.
Overall:
I can compare this to a roadside collision where you see everything but are given no solid answers because your forced to move along no matter how slow you drive.
Notes:
Did anyone notice how the the American, Russian and Chinese we're represented in space but Canada gets the short end of the stick? The flag wasn't even on the arm despite what happens. Hollowood strikes again!!
The King of the Kickboxers (1990)
Classic fun!
Over-the-top action with numerous memorable scenes for non-stop laughs. I would definitely watch this again and recommend it to those who enjoy silly action movies that are soo bad they're good.
Give it a try if you like any of 80's Van Dame or Jackie Chan stuff
Note:
The scene where Billy Blanks uses a pole to hit Jake and ends up lifting him up out of danger. Pay attention to Jake's face. HAHAHA!
