3801 Lancaster: American Tragedy (2015)
This is not a documentary. It's a sanctimonious soapbox.
While watching this, I was waiting for a yard full of buried people or disabled patients. It slowly steered towards abortion in a filthy clinic. Soon, the movie devolves into an attack on women's bodily autonomy and right to self-determination. This is disingenuous at best. I see it as an old-fashioned snowjob.
Skip it.
Meet the Mormons (2014)
A piece of well financed propaganda, aiming to push this cult into the mainstream.
While what they actually believe is not any crazier than any other religion might push, they are clearly different from their Christian counter parts. Some say Joseph Smith created the religion at the behest of the British Empire to undermine the protestant fiber of America. They may be succeeding. While many Mormons have lovely teeth and smiles, they still harbor some 'alternate' views on Jesus and the afterlife, as well as ingrained prejudice for blacks (they bear the mark of Cain) and the notorious sponsoring of Proposition 8 in California, directed at stripping the Constitutional right to marry for Gays. Smile all you want, hate is hate. They do not believe in the holy trinity. A Christian no-no. Lucifer is the brother of Jesus and when a good Mormon man dies, he gets his own planet with as many wives as he wants. Goofy stuff, but again, just as incredulous as any other religion might have us believe. A real clue to the shifty nature of Mormonism is the abandoning of polygamy by the main arm of the church. If God commands you to take more than one wife and his word is truth, why would you capitulate to the U.S. government and the ruling Protestant and Catholic ideals? The narration is snoozeville and a little irritating. And black Mormons? Blacks were not allowed to join until 1978. I don't know why any self respecting black family would join such a cult. There are clues to the real purpose of Mormonism in the important names of the cult. Mormon, the angel Moroni and Amoron. I'll leave you with this 'math' homework to see what's been perpetrated here by the once tarred and feathered shyster, Joseph Smith. At the end of the day, this is a curiosity and not the recruitment film they had hoped it would be.
Severe Visibility (2007)
A good indie with a frightening premise
I screened this at a friend of mine's house. He was a bit of a conspiracy guy so I was expecting a documentary from a nutso. It's actually a fictional account of a Pentagon worker who witnessed the event. And what his eyes saw doesn't jive with what the official story says. Problem is, Major Stanley Kruter has been on medication and in therapy in the past. This clouds the whole issue of what he saw, but it is not unlike what is happening today where a growing number of people are examining the evidence for themselves and daring to believe the science of it all. In short, it's a good effort from a truly independent filmmaker. The acting is just as good as a theatrical release you might plunk 10 dollars for tickets and 20 in concessions for. I say check it out if you are too afraid of broaching the documentaries. Maybe it will motivate you to search for your own truth. Or you just may enjoy a good movie.
